Default Do u follow ur order and go to the designated patrol destination?

Hello everyone. I'm a totally newbie here and to SH3. But i'm enjoying it especially the career mode.

My question is, sometimes i don't really like to go to some remote areas assigned me, and I find that after I reach those destinations and patrol it for 24 hours, it seems to give me no reward i.e. renown.

So should I totally ignore the orders and go straight to the grid I like? Will Donitz get mad at me if I always disobey orders?
Playing with GWX 3.0 and SH3 Commander 3.2.

Thanks.

Yes, I always do, but I will attack any targets of opportunity I come across on my way to or from the patrol grid.

WELCOME ABOARD!

Now I hate to be negative, but if you read the GWX manual you will find that they took away the renown for going to your patrol grid, because they didn't think captains should be rewarded for just following orders.

For myself, I don't play it as a game but try to do what they really did, which means I go to my assigned grid and stay there, not for twenty-four hours but for the entire patrol. If that means I don't get much tonnage, well, neither did a lot of them.

Game-wise, though, you're free to do whatever you like, so make the most of it and have fun. You won't get into any trouble at all; the game's not built that way.

Thanks for your quick reply.

I have read the manual of GWX 3.0 and knew that no reward will be given, just want to be sure if there would be any punishment if I act otherwise.

I always love to roleplay in a game with a huge setting, maybe this time I can pretend I am a disobedient uboat captain...

How long is a patrol? A month? Two weeks. I'm curious, what do you do when you run out of torpedoes?

Not yet... just wait until I finish my wharf-side SS firing squad mod.

I play a lot like Sailor Steve, and I head back to base when I run out of torpedoes. My usual patrols are 4 to 6 weeks. I don't use milk cows for torpedo reloads, as historically they were not used as such. Real life commanders would have received one or two torpedoes as a reload from a milk cow, so I don't abuse the system. I will usually run into a convoy or two on my way to/from my patrol grid, so returning with a full load of eels is not usually a problem. That being said, I have indeed come back with an empty bag.

It happens!

Two to three weeks in a Type II, six to eight in a Type VII. I've never done a patrol in a type IX, but I understand they could go three months or more.

Actually I wouldn't mind something like that. In SH1 if you didn't perform well enough they would threaten to relieve you of command. I never had it happen, but I usually did better on my next patrol.

I always go where BDu tells me, following known trade routes there and back. If I'm lucky, I might not make it to the assigned grid before running out of torps due to a hapless convoy I run into. I usually stay in the grid for a week in boots of the VII class and up and then make my way home along the same routes I used to get there, doubling my chances of hitting a convoy. I don't like to travel home torpless so always keep 2 or 3 in reserve for targets of opportunity or self defense.

I also use WB's Renown Replacement so my efforts are rewarded. Find it here:

In real life Uboats got several different operation areas during a patrol, and they also depended a lot on where they had been sent. Short and medium range Uboats where sent to specific grids and tightly controlled by BDU to form patrol lines that allowed detecting convoys and summoning for the attack. Long range boats had a bigger degree of freedom and where assigned zones loosely (F.e. the "Cape Hatteras area" or "Gulf of St. Lawrence" during Operation Drumbeat, Freetown approaches, and so on). The captain had in those boats more freedom, and could shift operations if the area was non-productive. Döenitz also was not a very patient man, he shifted the short and medium range boats around frequently if the assigned grid proved unproductly. When playing with medium and short range boats I try to follow that historic procedure and shift the patrol area to a grid not more than 2-3 away either north or south, simulating the different search patterns of patrol lines.

I go where the BDU sends me, and patrol the full 24 hours. A real captain would ahve to follow orders, like it or not, so I do the same. I will attack targets on the way, and after 24 hours I will go hunting where I feel I can find ships to sink.

But the '24 hours' is a game thing as well. In real life you were expected to stay where you were told until told to go somewhere else.

SH4 does this somewhat better, giving you new assignments after you report in. Sometimes your new assignment is "Go where the traffic is."

Still, it's a game and we can do what we want with it. I just like to point out how silly the '24 hours' is.

Welcome aboard kasperl

As already adequately explained you don't receive any renown in GWX for reaching or maintaining station in your assigned patrol grid.

As a means of a tad more information....nor do you get renown for returning to base, but this feature has never worked in stock Sh3 either.

SINK EM ALL!!

I certainly stick to my patrol grid, gives a more realistic feel to be honest.

If you think about it, you're simulating being part of a number of U-Boats out at sea, if these U-Boats had free reign over where to go, you'd leave wide gaps for convoys to pass through!

As has been said though, it's completely down to what gives you the most fun though.

I do as I'm told, do my 24 hour stint and then go where the joicy tonnages are, and also do exploring for fat freight routes. Once out or very low on torps, I go home where Hoochie-woochie babe is waiting.

Did you put Bernard in a dress again?

I just go where I think tonnage might be found. I don't have so much patients to go to a grid that is a million miles away from all freight routes to stay there without anything happening and then returning to the trade routes anyway (all at a max TC of 128...).
