Mods to get started

Currently I am a player of SH3+GWX but I got really curious about SH5 after viewing some videos on the net. So curious that I ordered a copy of the game and soon I'll have it.

In the meantime I read some sticky topics in here about mods.. there are so many of them that one can get lost easily

I know that this was probably asked a million times but I'll try to make it very simple and quick. For the moment I need some suggestions regarding these two areas of the game:

1) UI - As I can see the stock interface is arcade-style. I saw in here various UI mods but if you can suggest the most downloaded/famous mod it will be much appreciated. I come from SH3 so an UI similar to that would be cool too.

2) Sound - Even in this area I saw different mods. I am serching for one in particular that, other than changing sounds in general, changes the sound of the torpedo launch. I saw from videos that the torpedo launch sound is exactly the one from SH3 stock.. I find it very dull in comparison to what you hear with GWX.. absolutely fantastic. A mod with that sound/similar sound will be great.

That's all for now, thanks for the help

I also started SH5 after a long time past on SH3 and "crash dived" into mod business :-) Following is my current mod config. There is no mods in there that look "nice" but all of these make the game 100% realistic and playable..

Accurate German Flags
NDB,NDH OM#1 - No Dialog Indicator
U-Boat Propulsion SFX
Unterseeboot SFX
German U-Boat Hydrophone SFX
MightyFine Crew Mod 1.2.1 Stock w beards
German U-Boat Crew Language Pack
FX_Update_0_0_19_ByTheDarkWraith
NewUIs_TDC_7_1_0_ByTheDarkWraith
IRAI_0_0_37_ByTheDarkWraith
TDW_No_Hydrophone_On_Surface_No_Aircraft_Spotting_ 1_1_0
Cerberus62 Corrected Depth Charge Projector 1.0
TDW_Ship_Inertia_1_1_0
Reworked Morale and Abilities v.1.1
Grossdeutscher Rundfunk
Trevally Tutorial - All v0.2(for OHIIv1.3)
Trevally Automated Scripts v0.6
AOB slide ruller for TDW UIs and MO by stoianm
Manos Scopes-patch for 8x5
U-Boat Ballast Tanks SFX

Manos scope size depends on your game resolution, check display section there it writes the size as well, like "1280/1024, 8x5"

Use JSGME for loading the mods..

And one more important thing.. make sure all mods in following order as C:\\Ubisoft\MODS\....mod name...\data\ Some mods cannot be loaded to this folder as downloaded, check them first for this order. It is important I learned it the hard way :-)

Good luck matey..

Thanks for the replies, it seems that the most used/downloaded mods for UI and sound are respectively:

NewUIs_TDC_7_1_0_ByTheDarkWraith
Stormys DBSM SH5 v1.3

What SH5 really lacks is the presence of a supermod like GWX, actually it's a pain to browse all the mods and build a configuration that is complete and stable

What it really lacks is anything resembling the real u-boat war. Modders are still too busy making mods to fix that to worry about making 'extras'.

I am really interested about this matter since I haven't the game yet. Can you do a small summary of the main features that SH5 is missing compared to SH3/GWX ?

Well, it's good that you can walk all through your type VII u-boat, but you still can't play in a Type II or a Type IX.

There is no career mode. They have a so-called "campaign", but it has nothing to do with the actual goals of a u-boat captain in World War II. Especially grating are the demands to sink X ships or Y tonnage. No captain was ever told "Well, you've successfully completed the Happy Times. Which campaign would you like to try now?"

There is no crew. They made a big point of being able to talk to the crew, of even having to talk to them to keep morale up. Unfortunately the 'conversations' are so limited and so silly that it's worse than not having that function at all. And that's just the officers. The enlisted crew have been removed entirely. Sure, you can see some of them now, but they have no names. With SH3 Commander you have 1.7 billion possible name combinations, all based on real u-boatmen.

I'm told that SH5 is the first of the series that has a working Ship Names function, so the ships you sink get historic names. That's a good thing. I tried to get them to add in the correct tonnage for each ship, offering to do the work myself, since I've already done the research for SH3.

And the ships themselves. How many different merchant types are there in SH5? Six? Seven? Thanks to a handful of modders there are more than one hundred different merchant types in SH3. My understanding is that people are having trouble adding any new merchants at all to SH5.

It's a beautiful game, and a lot of people are very happy with it. I had a lot of fun the week my poor ancient computer ran it before it just couldn't anymore. If I ever get a decent computer I would cheerfully play it and nothing else if all those things were addressed. SH5 is a better game than anything that has come before, but as a historical simulation it doesn't come close. Until it actually has more to offer in that department SH3 will still get top place on my computer.

You could also ask for a summary of what SH5 does better than the others.

Yes indeed. If it wasn't better in certain areas it wouldn't have so many fans. It deserves a look. Who knows, you might become one of them.

Well, I gave a try at SH5 recently and I have to say that it isn't my game, at least for the moment. It isn't ready yet, for all the reasons that Sailor Steve already explained.

From my personal point of view, the game surely do his job in terms of graphics, but for the rest, it's simply too "arcade", I can't find any better word that summarize my thoughts.

I will stick to SH3+GWX, it's still unbeatable

Apart of campaign, crew management and ships, with real navigation and all map helps hidden, "arcade" control system disappears, really one of the things that SH5 needs, is the grid system.

Bye !!

YES!
TDW was saying that the game ALWAYS knows what grid you are in... It is showing it on the map that is the problem atm...

In regards to campaign and crew management: hopefully will figure it out eventually. Have no clue how, but hopefully
