I've been seeing a lot of good info about the in various threads, ie, where to check the fuel and battery levels, how to change realism settings before a campaign mission, how to use the deck gun optics.

If you see any good FAQ and info about the game please post here. It won't hurt if we have some duplicates, but please don't clutter the thread with discussion. thanks! :salute: We'll get us some real good FAQ going.

If you are having trouble getting started in the campaign, here is a walkthrough of mission on and getting a new mission.

Silent Hunter V Campaign Intro (http://www.subsim.com/2010_02/sh5/2010/sh5_intro/tip_sh5_feb2010.php) & Tips
Includes Docking, Dropping off Spies, Wearing ladies shoes and more!

If you don't have the game, I suggest not reading this if you like to discover these things yourself.

Q: How to use deck gun optics?
From Mookie: Upper left hand corner of the deck gun view. There's a button for the optic view.

How to aim torpedoes discussion. (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=162680)

Problem 1: Sometimes the player can remain stuck between collision boxes and cannot move anymore
Workaround: By pressing SHIFT+U player will be repositioned in the command room (or bridge) of the submarine. Is handy for getting off the deck gun when under fire but isn't very realistic.

Problem: I have the following issues with my ATI 4870 card: No water is rendered in-game or in the museum. Tooltip text is rendered on a white background, making it almost impossible to read. My view is frozen when I try to move through the sub, and I cannot look around when I have the right mouse button pressed down. My video card drivers are up to date, and I've tried a variety of graphics settings. So, how do I fix this?

Solution: That's not a graphics card issue - that's a corrupted install. Reinstalling did the trick for him, should work for you.
Yep, it did. I also disabled my AVG antivirus software during the reinstall, and now (so far) all is good.

From Mookie:
CCIP's Command Keys mod - really helps ease the transition for SH3/SH4 vets: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=162661

Hit the ESC key while you're in the sub pen and you can change all of your realism settings before setting out on patrol. Once you have a target locked in your peri/UZO view, you can turn the TDC on/off by just telling your IWO to do so.

Anecdotal evidence suggests that the shadows are big FPS killers. I've turned my down and I did notice an improvement.

New TDC tips: The TDC in the traditional sense is gone....meaning that you won't be turning dials (I know, I know...a step backwards). He's going to say "I see a unidentified freighter on bearing 45, range 2000 meters travelling 10 knots with an angle on bow of 35 starboard."
You have to click the underlined items and fill them in with ID book, stadimeter and AOB readings or you can hand input them by clicking on the number and entering new numbers.

When you install the game, you get a choice of German or English voices. To switch, you need to reinstall or you can add them manually from the game disc.
SilentHunter 5\data\LngGameData\Voices\German\data\movies
SilentHunter 5\data\LngGameData\Voices\German\data\sound
Just copy them over to the right location.

Returning to home port: Always check where your small blue port symbol is. That's where you are supposed to go home. I also returned to Kiel and then the next mission began out of Wilhelmshaven. I guess Doenitz moved my sub while I was in the bar.

If you are returning to port after finishing a patrol, and you cannot get the "Dock" icon to appear, so you can end patrol, hit SHIFT Z and toggle the UI and it will appear.
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/picture.php?albumid=198&pictureid=1392
It may be necessary to toggle the interface with Shift Z to get the anchor icon to appear. Here is a demonstration, (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3YwhLfe7Kzs&hd=1)the anchor never appeared until I was completely in the pen :) I hit Shift Z and it appeared.

In bunker before patrol, hit 'Esc' to bring up realism options.

Fuel and battery levels are well hidden! Hit J to bring up torpedo screen. Then navigate to the Subsystems Tab. There you will find fuel, battery, CO2, compressed air levels and hull integrity.

Ordering crew to man the deck/flak gun costs one (1) morale point for the watch officer. :shifty:

Also, loading a saved game will reset everyone's morale to zero (0), so better get that special meal ability for the cook! 2x:shifty:

It's not in any of the game screens. You have to click the little gear icon in the upper right of the Uplay launcher that comes up before the game.

Travel Mode.

The icon on the right of the Time Compression panel turns on Travel Mode. With this active, T/C does not get reduced for shallow water, proximity to land, or nearby ships. Useful when going through safe areas like the Kiel Canal.

Can't End your Patrol Mission? Gone back to your base and can't dock anymore. Well you have been resigned to a new base.

Open up the nav map and look for a symbol on one of the other Naval bases that looks like a Submarine. This is now your new base... So you have to land there.

Yes it would of been nice if BDU told you this.... But you know sometimes things happen.:rotfl2:

There's a Kiel Canal?

Yeah, it is actually in the stock game this time. We traded our compass, gramophone, radio and depth sounding equipment for it :har:

Seriously though it looks pretty good but the locks are a bit tight for the AI, which just like in stock SH3 and 4, likes to run aground and blow up alot.

Pressing Enter (on the keyboard not numpad) brings up the Sub Systems window so you can quickly check Fuel, Battery, CO2 and Compressed Air.

I've been seeing a lot of complaints about multiple clicks to see this info when it's really just one button away. Of course the manu... I mean, pamphlet doesn't relay this very well.

I'm sorry that doesent qualify as 'quickly checking' in my book. Quickly checking would be glancing at a tool bar at the bottom of the screen at an indicator not having to step through a series of menus.

You don't have to step through a series of menus, You press one button and there it is, press the button again and it goes away. Does anything related to those 4 things happen ever so fast you need to have them in your view constantly? In SH3 you had to use the slideout or ask your Chief Engineer to see them unless you modded them on to the UI.

Dunno about the radio. I didn't see anything that jumped out at me in the file. Your watch crew is supposed to go down automatically when you dive. There's an intermittent problem where they sometimes don't. Was in SH4 too.

How to go up the ladders

I see a lot of people are having trouble with this. I did too initially. The key is to not look up too much. Look at the ladder, a couple rungs above eye level - not the hatch above.

Did you actually select a mission? You have to actually sit through the "briefing" (I'd skip it, at least after the first time, it'll be the same for a while) and THEN click on a mission (round german cross icons on the map), hit "request mission" in the window that pops up, and then close the map. After that, if you talk to the guy again and select "start patrol", you should have a mission icon on the map.

I just discovered that the TAB key toggles three mini-map modes. Pressing Shift + TAB closes the minimap and the expandable nav tool tray.

Closed, minimal and maximal. One can resize the minimal and maximal manually, and use the TAB key, but it seem bugged. The maximized-mode doesn't like being resized it seems to me, but the smaller one can be without bugging out.

---
I noticed that one of the two crew manning the cannon, is actually rotating a wheel, synched with the boat ocillating sideway, for keeping the canon barrel level.

---
Also, I found a couple of hotkeys that seem to close the tubes in sequence, wonder what they are for. I get the message "Closing tube1" on pressing , (comma) and . (punctum), "Closing tube2" when pressing the keys again, and etc.

Edit: It seems that the two keys I mentioned cycle through the selection of the five torpedo tubes, backwards or forwards.

Not sure about ordering 'fire at will' but to man the gun yourself, you need to walk up to the gun and click on it. There are ladders at either side of the conning tower.

You can get the deck gun to fire by focusing on the target in the binoculars and pressing the space bar to "lock it" for gunnery action. I don't know how you are supposed to know that :-)

Once the deck gun is manned using your binocs and locking the target (space) should get the crew firing. You'll see a little deck gun icon to the left in your binocs indicating that the target should be fired upon.

That has been the case since SH-II.
I was talking about up to IV, the watch officer could command fire at will or cease fire. I can't find anyway to do that. On another note, I had my guys manned on the first mission, had the ships in range and locked to fire upon...nothing happened, no firing as if they were under the Cease fire command which is the default with the last 3 versions.

I did not try to actually walk to the guns...
There is no quick way to get there, I actually have to walk to them every time I want to man them?

F5 will toggle the deck gun crew, F6 toggles the flak crew, and F7 will toggle action stations. Handy for when you're running decks awash and the deck gun decides it wants to give your position away to that convoy. :shifty:

Where do i find the 5 ships i need to sink on the northern patrol route?

This form the first chapter of the campaign, the mission is called blockade of Germany.

I saw someone else asked before here where is the air carrier in that mission.

Well i meet one in the English channel, When i had sunk that i got sink one air carrier complete.
Then i found one more right afterward hehe i came from Portsmouth.

In SHIV it "increased overall efficiency" and you could see on the crew screen that everbody was out of their bunks whether they needed sleep or not, etc. - I'm not sure I can tell what it does in SHV, don't recall seeing more crewmen standing around, and I'd like to know *how much* extra efficiency I'm getting in exchange for *how much* loss of efficiency at some point in the future.

Try pressing the numberpad "." or "/" key, im at "work" now so i cant verify, one is return to course the other is "Make my viewpoint the new heading"

To lower obervation periscope: Press shift+ insert on the keypad above the arrow keys, i had trouble with this too... Wish they didnt auto-raise when you went to the periscope station.

My only problem is there doesnt seem to be any kind of compass, the guys call out "Airplane spotted - 278" and i dont have the numbers on the binoc view anymore. I know 27X means left about 90 degrees, but i would rather have a compass to verify. Also airplanes dont show up on the map anymore, while ships still do. And the game runs like dog****. The answer really is to spend the $10 and get a mouse with a wheel. Used to be you could hold both buttons and zoom that way I think, but honestly, spend the money and get a working mouse. :)

Weird enough, as i usually play the game with music from the gramophone, i don't use external players while in game during long voyages. Its about both immersion and maybe less resources consumption. In other words this little detail is vital for me

Some of the closeup shots are probably made with CCIP's camera mod, you can find that in the Workshop (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=162663) too. :)

1) Can i zoom right into the deck guns sights like SH3 and SH4? Seems i can only go so close and am offset.
1) Where's the time compression displayed? I can press the keys and see the increase/decrease, but not what the actual compression is?
3) And lastly is there hotkeys for the periscopes, UZO, and deck guns or have i got to make my own way there every time?

And is there a list anywhere of the game keys? Not the F1 screen that comes up but just a list?

Thanx again

Okay will try here, but I am also using SH3/4 keys mod by CCC that reverts most of SH5 keys into those used in Sh3.

1. click on the deck gun, on the upper Left hand side there next to the AP shell there is a small icon looks like binocs click on that to zoom to diff settings.

2.TC speed setting is displayed on the upper right side where you can manual click on the +/- or use the num pad it displays what tc you are at.

3. NO! Gotta run to the stations.

Hope this helps

I had the same issues when I 1st started, but soon got the hang of it. make sure you are facing the ladder and are close. Now look up just above eye level then walk forward. That should do it 4 u.
I was making the mistake of looking all the way up and wondering why I could not climb, so hope this helped

PLaying the game for 2 days now and slowly get the hang of it.

However, does anybody have an idea where to find the setting for the torpedo salvo spread angle? Maybe it works automatic depending on range, I have certain suspicions going this way, but a manual way of entering these values would be highly appreciated.

Also, does anybody know where the tower emblem folder is located?

As far as I know there is no way to set the spread angle yourself IMO. Having read alot of threads pre and post release it seems its pretty much set, to what who knows.

Look more carefully at your screenshot. Your next objective is to Plot a course to Kiel (plot it into the harbor, not just near the area). Until you do that you cannot progress with the tutorial and certain UI elements, like the one you're "missing" won't display.

Thats from the 'training' tutorial some of the features are disabled for whatever reason.

Did anyone mention shft+F for hold current depth?

Handy when diving, just order a dive and when you reach the depth you want shft+F and she will level out.

So i'm completely new to the SH franchise and at this point I really like it. I'm playing on the most noobiest skill at the moment which is low. Yet I have a question:

I'm on the first mission to kill those british merchant ships, but how am I supposed to spot them? I just click in the area I need to be, and time compression to like 5000x until I see a red rectangle on the map and see it's a merchant ship.. Is this the way how to play this game? I mean I can go on top of the sub and check the horizon continually but that doesn't really work if you ask me.

Welcome aboard Gerwim!

Your experience is not so uncommon, that's like what the submarine war was in real life: boringly zigzagging around and watching holes into the sky for days and weeks without seeing any enemy ships. Have you ever watched "Das Boot"? That is what it was like.

OK now some hints:
- from my experience any TC value above 128x causes the simulation to behave strange, beside of that you won't be able to react if you run into an enemy.
- the red rectangles appearing somewhere near or far on the map, are radio contacts (contacts which have been intercepted by your radio operator or contacts radioed in by your supreme command). If you set course for those rectangles the ships will be gone long before you reach that point. Click on that rectangles and you get some further information about speed and bearing of that contact, if available. Go to the map and draw a line in the approximate direction of the contacts bearing. Draw a circle of the contacts travel distance in one hour and mark that distances along the line (e.g. a contact reported with 10kn will travel with a speed of 18,5 km/h). If you can reach a point on that line in about 5 hours with the contact presumed near that point, you'll have a good chance to intercept the target.
It´s always a good idea to dive to 40-50m from time to time if you expect a target nearby, because the detection range of an U-Boat's sonar is larger than it's line of sight.
- search for areas where ships have to pass inevitably to reach a certain area or harbour, your chances for intercepts will rise significantly, but be careful those "junction points" are also well observed by your enemy.

Patience is a virtue!

Cheers,
Michael

They go inside, it's just an instant, no-animation transition. That is how it normally works but there are bugs where the crew doesn't animate below (exterior cam shows deck crew at depth) but that's not the player's fault.

Simple surface to recycle air, it happens automatically. Your batteries will charge while you're on the surface as well as your diesel is running. Not sure if they'll magically charge on their own if you just sit there though.

Q: I'm a but confused with setting the Angle on Bow.
Example, I'm lined up for a (almost) perfect 90° AoB attack.
My target will pass through my view from left to right.

When I'm looking at my target through my periscope at 330°, what do I enter as AoB. 60°, 90° or some thing else?

Q: When determining range, do I measure from the highest mast, the smoker or from some where else?

1. The AOB value should be the one that makes the situation at the instant of firing. However the AOB updates based on periscope bearing change in a logical way. If you set a AOB 060 with the periscope at 330 and then swing the periscope to 360 the AOB will likewise change itself to 090.

2. It depends on what the target ship is. They all vary with no rhyme or reason.

Question, is F5 supposed to get you to the Deck Gun station? If not how do you get from the bridge to the deck gun/flack gun for that matter.:hmmm:

F5 gets or removed (a toggle) the CREW from the deck gun. You have to get there yourself. :) However I believe it only works if they "are there" already.

Basically I work the gun like this: When I see something I want to shoot, binocs out, look at it, press SPACE. The gun starts to shoot with people on it. When I'm done shooting things I press F5. This brings up the "Hey, guys are on the gun" icon. I press F5 again and they disappear.

For the flak gun, just click on it and you'll enter it (even if it's the one down a level). I've never been able to get AI on the flak guns yet... For the deck gun some people say you can click on it from the bridge like with the flak, but I can't ever SEE it well enough to do that so I just sigh loudly, and climb down the ladder and stomp across the deck to get on it when I want the joy of making things go boom.

Frederf
03-11-10, 12:38 AM
I would assume F5 and F6 are shortcuts for the Deck Officer's abilities. These abilities cost morale so if you are encountering a bug where the morale is lost (or you just don't have any) these keys would appear to do nothing.

F5 toggle the deck gun crew
F6 toggles the flak crew
F7 toggle action stations

F10 overload E-Motors
F11 "tickle" Torpedos

Just copying pasting my findings from another thread:

Resupplying at sea works.
There are Resupply Map Locations defined in some of the campaign projects, I didn't see any in the Total Germany 39 campaign but there were some in Operation Drumbeat.

How it works is, if you are in the range of the resupply location, which can be defined using the Mission Editor, you call for a resupply using your radio guy. He will give you coordinates to the rendezvous point. You'll meet with the assigned ship/submarine (again the class of ship can be defined) and the icon to refit/resupply will show up when you are about a km out..

I tried this by creating 2 resupply locations in the Baltic, my VIIB (!) supply boat showed up as planned.. I waited a few days to see if he disappears but after 3 days he was still there..

There also seems to be a minimum time between refits, because I kept getting denied at my 2nd resupply location..

How will you know in-game, where the resupply locations are? Well I haven't played that far in the campaign but I guess they will be shown on the map when available(?), not sure..

I recieved my copy of sh5 two days ago am still working through it.the biggest problem for me anyway is I cant get off the bridge at night to dive the boat ,destroyers coming right at me.is there any work around for this? very furstrating.also having no ranges displayed when looking through uzo or periscope. i guess you have to activate the tdc just to look.I was really looking forward to this release.I 'm very disappointed.I gues i'll have to shelve it untill the modders finish it.

Step back from the UZO and look down. If the hatch is closed click it to open it, then move forward towards the hatch to enter the sub and allow diving.

There are two cases where this won't work. First is if you're too low in the water. If you're under 7m the hatch won't open. Press "R" to surface and the hatch should be selectable once you're surfaced. Rough seas can do this too, if you try the hatch while you're "washed" it won't open, wait for a low wave and try it again.

Secondly is if you're just plain bugged. In this case try Shift-U. You might actually be INSIDE the sub, but not see that you are. Shift-U will reset your avatar to where you should be, bridge surfaced or control room submerged.

As for the range, if you have map contacts on you can judge from that. If they are off, you'll need to eye it or use the standimeter for it.

I'm on my first mission: Sink 50,000 tons of allied shippings at the British coastline. I have not done it yet and I have only three torpedoes left (2 fwd, 1 rear). How the resupply works? I believe the last patch disabled the resupply option from the radio man. Do I have to go all the way back to Kiel?

I have a question. How to hit a ship with torpedo using automatic TDC at long distance (1800 meters and above)?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You still need to line up the target and 'lead it' just like you do when it is close. So when its close you would put the number 1,2 or 3 over the ships 1,2 or 3 and then fire. Your torps range on steam can be up to 3km... so you can still fire at targets a long way way, however the accuracy will be down. Just lead the target and fire...... its better when the triangle is green...

szultz
03-13-10, 10:26 AM
OK, great news. I found how to have SH3/4 style auto targeting for torpedoes. I'll put it in this thread too for easier finding.

All you have to do is have the target ship in you're periscope/UZO, but do not lock on to the target. Keep ship in you're 'sights' and fire away.
It's clearly seen in the mini-map, when you have target locked and centered in periscope, torpedo trajectory on the mini-map runs trough the ships current position, when you press space to unlock target, trajectory automatically shifts to an intercept course.
It's important that you don't upgrade torpedoman's skills that affect torpedo speed. Game can't compensate for increased speed and you'll miss.

I had notice that checking the manual targeting ws on no matter what you checked on the options screen. You saved me time trying to figure it out. Did you notice if having the watch officer turn the TDC on or off made any difference? I plan to experiment with that today so if I discover anything interesting I will post it.

If you man the gun yourself, you can see and change ammo. I dont know this cna be done any other way.

Thats because Kiel is no longer your home port. check map for a blue square with a sub pic on it. That is now your home port. Would have been nice for the game to tell you this. I know!:nope:

Where do I see how much ammunition is left for the deck gun?

You need to run down to the gun and click on it. From the "gunner view" you'll see the ammo types in the top left corner with how many shots are in each.

Also how do you switch ammo type?

You change ammo types by clicking on the other ammo icon. There's three, but only two (AP and HE) work. :)

When I sailed back to Kiel I only have the options to click on Refit and Postpone, the End Patrol option cannot be clicked on. Why is that?

During your patrol your base changed to Wilhemshaven. Look for the diamond submarine base icon to see where you can end your patrol.

Finish the tutorial patrol, then on your first real one you'll have access to the WO from the scope screen. Before locking anything tell him to Turn ON TDC then when you lock something the filterable Req Manual will appear.
Hmmm so it's not availble any other way than when a ship is locked?
Shucks, I'd like to have a look though it before encountering the enemy.

Go to the nav map and move to your last plotted waypoint.

Yeah, this is why I dont plot to far ahead. That way I never have to go far to do this, and besides I've found in the past with SH it's better not to plot all that far anyway, just usually have to ditch it to go after a contact along the way.

Depth under keel is not available without mods. Check the Mods forum for one of the Keyboard configs.

Thank you Sergi, this drove me nuts this evening. Hopefully in the remainder of this patrol I can get the chance to try this as you say.
But this evening, I run into an unescorted convoy and had a hey day and sank five ships, used up all torpedos and then tried to get WO to man the deck gun but to no avail, F5 no workie either.
Only way I could get it manned was to go down and jump on it myself. Then went back up and then could not figure how to get them to target and fire. Nothing I tried did a thing so I ended up manning it myself and did all the firing. That at least got me familiar with shooting it. I took out three ships with it, but never did get the crew to do it.

But next time I'll give this binoc thing a try, I wouldnt have guessed.
I just kept trying using the UZO and the ship was locked with it, but no teddy bear, the crew just remained still.

When looking through the binoculars at the target, press the space bar as if to "lock" the target. The gun will then fire. In fact you don't need to request "man the deck gun" this way.

That is probably due to the morale bug. After a save and reload the game will reset your morale points to zero.
Manning the deck gun 'costs' you 1 morale point. If the game has zeroed out your morale points they just refuse to do their bloody jobs!
I'm using one of the morale fix mods, that set the cost of essential jobs to zero, so the crew will still do their jobs even if the game has magicked away all your morale points.

Try this.

Arrr, but thats what didnt make any sense though mate. the entire crew's morale was extremely high as we had just sunk three ships and having used up all remaining torpedos, I came to the surface to finish off the rest of them with the gun as I hadn't used it yet this patrol, seas were plenty calm for it, and had plenty of ammo. And I even checked on morale just before sufacing. But no matter what I tried even though the WO responded and ordered the gun manned nothing happened.
Later on though, after I had manually manned it, which put two men on it I had the HUD on, and noticed a deckgun icon appeared in the upper right of the screen, where other icons of one kind or another has also, like the "we are underwater" one, and special abilty icons as well.
I hit F5 and it dissapeared as did the deck gun crew, hit it again and the icon came back on and again I hit F5 and it dissapeared then after that it wouldnt work fo nothing. And still the crew's morale was as high as ever, and still could not get that icon to reappear.

This and the fact that I did not know of course that to get the deck gun crew to target and fire upon a vessel that it was the binoculars that I needed to use to do this as you pointed out. I was trying everything else but that.
The whole fiasco made no sense what so ever. Well I tell ya, im still wanting to wait out the devs to see what they patch and fix, and surely this is one they will address cause it's surely a bug.
The only way I was able to take out those remaining ships was shooting that gun myself. Which was fun, and I got the job done and learned to aim and fire the thing in the process I'd sure love to have been able to have stayed up on the bridge and watched as my very highly moraled crew did the work they were here for.
This is just one more thing that has taken a turn wayyyy south of what SH3 was. That was one thing about SH3 that I always loved, was that very obedient and respectful crew. When you gave an order it was "YES SIR! And they got to it.
This time around it's the complete opposite, and I think I'd rather just throw the lot of them overboard cause so far I've had to do everything myself. Hell they aint even good for conversation.:88)

Yes if the devs dont come up with a patch soon, im going to go and install some of these mods. I've downloaded a few, and did what one fellow instructed how to do on the depth under keel command(was quite simple and done it myself.)
But I just want to wait out at least the next patch before I start modding the heck out of it, even though it's clear it needs it badly before I shoot the entire crew and run this boat alone, cause I feel thats what im doing now.
Ok, I've rattled on here, I just wanted to thank you Sergi for that tip on using the bincular's cross and space bar to get the deck crew to do thier job and fire. I'd have found this somewhow by accident eventually I suppose but damn there is nothing about that in the manual, or in the on scenn instructions that keep trying to appear even though they aren't any help.

No I dont have any mods installed, not yet anyway. I plan to if the next patch doesn't fix what I want.
But I was chasing down a ship last night, finally got close enough for a visual and once the WO announced he'd spotted it I went to binocular view, got the ship insight and held the crosshair on it till it turns red. Then as it's red hit spacebar and then an arrow appears below the ship, and a little deckgun icon appears in the upper left corner of binocular and about 10 seconds later I hear them start firing away.
Now of course I will also assume this will require the right weather and sea state. Which I had.

If the sea conditions are rough you may not get this to work, at least it shouldnt anyway but I dont know as I haven't tried but in the past SH titles a rough sea, where a lot of pitching and rolling is going on will prevent manning of the guns.

Again thanks so much for the tip on this to start with, sure made this last attack before returning for resupply a pleasure to conduct. (was on the way back for reload when we stumbled onto this ship).
So now we really are out of ammo with only 10 rounds of AP shells left, probably only enough to take out a fishing boat if that, and I wouldn't do that anyway.
So yeah we are indeed empty, and the crew's heads so big nearly unable to get through a hatchway, well except for Benno who's likely to be walking the plank if he doesnt start obeying orders.:stare:

I think you mean you can't get the deck gun to work "automatically", as manually you just have to walk up and click on it.
To get get the gunners to fire, don't click on the binoculars. Just zoom with your mousewheel from the bridge. Look at the target and when the crosshairs are red press spacebar. The gunners will then fire, and will shift target automatically.
Just don't forget to tell the WO to "Man the deck gun" first:up:.

Actually you dont even have to have the WO man the deck gun prior to locking the target in the binocular view. Last night all I did was get the crosshair on the ship, crosshair turned red and I hit spacebar. The deck gun wasnt manned before I did this, in fact asking the WO to have it manned didn't do a thing even though he yelled out the order. Nobody came.
But when I locked the target in the binocs, that was all it took, they manned it and then began firing on the ship. I gave no order to the WO.
And further, hitting the spacebar again stopped the firing.
After the ship was then destroyed and sinking, I then hit "R" for the surface command and that unmanned the gun, even though this should be accomplished by F5, at least it works. It's bug for sure, but at least now I have a way to get the job done.
So far about the only ting that WO is good for is spotting ships, which so far he actually has done a good job of. He seems to be able to spot smoke on the horizon, where I cant see a thing out there.
And this attack was at night, and quite dark too and in fog.

Hey,

first Q, can i aim at a certain parts of the boat by using auto tdc? how? for example, let say i want to hit middle, or very front and etc.
also, whats the best depth for the torpedo, or does it depend on the boat i am attacking? Boats do have different length bottoms (ones are deeper in the water, others not).

Thanks a lot.

Hi, I press spacebar to lock a ship but the periscope will not stay tracking the center of the target as in previous games. Is there something I'm missing or is that just the way it is? Also, after locking a target, how do you know the range, speed etc.? Many thanks...

Scoochy
03-20-10, 11:21 AM
In this version, the periscope does not stay centered on the target. You're not doing anything wrong.

Range can be determined by the Stadimeter (although arguably inaccurate at long range) or by using the map tools with "Map Contact Updates ON".

Speed can also be determined by using the Stadimeter, or by using the 3 minute rule by marking the contact on the map and using the distance traveled in 3 minutes to determine the speed. e.g. 400 kilometers in 3 minutes = 4 knots.

There are also mods available that provide other means of getting both speed and range.

Use your periscope to target certain parts of the ship. If your TDC Calculations are accurate, the bearing your are pointing is the information used for targeting.

Torpedo depth is determined by the depth of their hull. Default usually sets the torpedo depth to just below the waterline, which should be fine. If you are using the magnetic trigger, set your depth 1-2 meters below the keel for magnetic detonation.

There is actually a way...

just add another way point to your current last waypoint and your sub will resume course again.

Sorry if this was posted already.

One can use the Home & End keys to rotate the listening device, just like using the mouse wheel.

Well, im using "connecting the dots" method, if i match them 100%, then torpedo seems to hit right in the middle of the boat, so i guess if i want to hit in front or back i should not connect dots 100%?

For example, i should probably connect half and half, with my dot being in front/ahead TO HIT THE FRONT, and my dot being half and half behind with boat's dot to hit the back of the boat. Sorry if my explanation is confusing, cant think of other words/explanation at a moment lol

When the launcher is loading, says logging on, click on the little cog wheel in the top right corner. It will give you the option of turning off online synchronization for save games.
Mind you, you still get the 'synchronizing with server' message at the main load screen, but as far as I can tell, it's not actually doing it.

Since turning this off
I lost all my saves today after synchronization.
this hasn't happened to me. :DL

EDIT: Here's a pic

IMPORTANT: Once you turn online synchronization off, never ever ever turn it on again. If you do disaster will befall you and all will be lost.

Hey ppl,

Don't think this was answered already but correct me if it has.

How do you get the Flak gun crew to target aircraft? The Flak crew man the guns but just stand there as Hurricanes buzz the conning tower.

Help, please!:hmmm:

Tired of laying out multiple waypoints when plotting a course? Just set one in front of you and then grab that waypoint by left clicking on it with your mouse and hold down on the mouse button.

Now you can drag that waypoint to a different location when you need to change course and your sub will automatically change course to follow it. This makes for easy and quickly nav. through the ports and avoiding ships. Note that the more time compression you use the quicker you need to be moving your waypoint around.

If you have a number of them set and want to change up your plotted course you can do the same by holding any of them with your left mouse button and moving them to where you want them. :)

Simple! Don't. :03:

The single best advantage over destroyers that you have is stealth. Use it. Don't waste your torpedoes on destroyers when they could be used against merchant shipping worth 7-10x the tonnage. You'll never win a gun duel with a destroyer either, so the best thing to do with destroyers is simply avoid them.

Manual TDC is effortlessly easy, especially with map contact on. But it still "feels" like you're doing the work and will fail if you don't give it proper info. Nothing is better than waiting for a convoy, killing 4 ships as they sail past you, then submerging and evading destroyers because they have no idea where you are.

Hmmmm, well Home & End keys work for me on this, and rotates it fast. Then with the mousewheel you get a slow and fine movement, which is good for fine tuning it to the exact bearing.

And no I didn't have no mods except for the depth under keel key binding I did maually in the cfg.

You could talk to your WO, he should have a dialog option for unman the deck gun.
Bit buggy though, doesn't always work.

An option that does always work (in my experience) is to hit the 'surface the boat' command.
It will kick the crew off the deck gun.
Dunno why.

I think it's tied into morale.
I have a feeling that un manning the deck gun 'costs' you 1 morale point.
And if the game has zeroed out your morale, as it does from time to time, the command won't work.

EDIT: Of course, if you are using one of the morale fix mods that can change. A few of them reduce the cost of manning and unmanning the guns to zero, so you will not encounter this problem.
At least that's how I read it.

Just a few questions..

How to send range ping with sonar? is it only certain models? (still in early 1940)

how to apply twin 20mm upgrade to 2nd aa deck?

Does setting torps 1-2m under keel really work? In my experience from sh4 that never really works and u have to set it right at keel depth

You won't get actual sonar till later in the game I don't think.

how to apply twin 20mm upgrade to 2nd aa deck?

You'll get an option for "Wintergarden" Flak Cannon, select it from there when you have the expanded VIIC conning tower.

Sure does, I got two great keel shots tonight using 1m below.

I D/L'd the "all upgrades" mod thingy just to see what new things they have, but it's not working :(

Also, I was unable to apply the twin 20mm AA gun to the Wintergarten slot, just single is available i believe

stellaferox

You need exactly four torps, no matter head on hull or below keel. Also the torps impact with a much duller sound then on merchants. Don't know whether this is intended due to the armour or a bug.

The Wintergarten double flak comes available after a period. I got it end june 1940.

For taking down the Queen, it depends on if you're using torpedo mods at all.

With improved Torpedos, you can get away with two (one if your lucky) usually under the keel shots directly below a stern and bow turret.

Stock you can get away with three but it may take a bit to sink

Are you on the training mission in the Baltic sea? If so you wont have anyone on deck with you. That doesnt happen till that mission is complete, and you take command of the boat & crew after returning to base at Kiel and then start the next mission/patrol as captain.

Ok here's something I noticed last night and I have read of others experiencing. It's the stuttering, or what I saw was more like surging.

It's been happening the last two times in the game and I thought it was just me, but on the way in to port last night I confirmed that the graphics were surging and stuttering. And what it tok to really see this was the seagulls and how they were flying.
So I saved and quit game, did system restart then went back in and all is smooth and sliky again. It's just something that I forget about sometimes, that any computer that stays on full time runs into, and it just needs a good ole restart to clear out things that are clogging up RAM and causing other programs to experience this.

I have completed the east coast missions and the South West approaches missions twice but I am having trouble with the blockade mission. I can't find an aircraft carrier at sea. I sank the Ark Royal at acnhor at Plymouth and 6- 10 ships between Iceland and northern Ireland but the mission never shows as complete.

My question is do you have to sink a special type of merchant only? Where is everyone else finding aircraft carriers?:hmmm:

THanks for any suggestions you have

Check this thread: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=165848 I have a picture there where you'll find the 5 ships you need to sink for that mission.

For the aircraft carrier, I sunk three of them. One up north of Scotland, one south of Scotland and one in the channel. Only the channel one qualified. It was a Furious type, or something.

Kylania,

You have found out a lot about this game, I would have never guessed from the mission brief that I had to sink a carrier in the English channel. I would be totally lost in this game without this forum to help me out.

I missed the Carrier hint because I was zoomed to the northern 5 ship hunting ground, pays to expand the map occasionally!

Thanks for your effort and assistance.

Trying out no Map Updates? Here's some older threads from total geniuses that will help you find ships, including the wonderful "hydrophone only hunt and kill" video.

I see lots of radio station mods out there. No one has yet answered how to enable the radio. Anyone?

SabreHawk
03-28-10, 02:36 PM
Well I've been looking through the commands cfg file and there are many many commands in it that were never enabled and a key designated for it.

And on the user radio there is a command for that, as well as a great deal of others, but as im learning thanks to the fine modders here and their work it isnt that hard to get in there and get things working, and binded to the key of your choice. Just have to have the needed ASCII codes and a little knowlege of whats what with the other things in the entries in this file.
For which there is actually a short explanation of this at the beginning of the file. Such as contexts ect. But for deeper things I need to study up, cause things like "Strings" I dont know about. But im looking into such things and heck who knows I may do some mods of my own eventually.
