That's the kind of thing that kills me. You could have a very "there" and intuitive experience if, for example, you had to go down to the radio room to get radio messages. Instead you click an icon hovering around the perimeter of the screen.

Game is full of crap like that.

I dare say you'd have more people complaining that you needed to walk, slowly and clumsily, from one end of the sub to the other to do something that in reality would have been brought to you.

If you really wanted to, just don't click the button till you've walked to the radio room. You get your painful realism and everyone else gets their button. :DL

Or for even more added "realism" remove the icon from your UI and code in a dialog response to your Radioman. That way you can't access information till you've done the walk. There's lots of solutions to play this game any way you want to.

Just got my SH5 and love it, I'm retired now and want to get back into my games. Time compression can only get it to 32, how can I gain more compression. 1st mission is that the prob??

Time compression is, by default, limited to 32x in any 3D view. Inside the sub, on the conning tower, external camera view. To get higher just open the Navigation Map. You can pretty much go as fast as your computer can handle. However over 1024x in open areas and 256x in congested areas can get dangerous since you'll have no time to react to something.

You can edit a file to raise the default TC limits if you wanted to, but just using the Nav Map is easiest.

Never found a fix for the radio yet in this thread, so here is a basic radio fix for us non-programmers. Not too elegant, but this works.

As SabreHawk mentioned earlier, you can tweak the commands.cfg file. This file is found in directory "Silent Hunter 5\Data\cfg".

Keep in mind that other modifications or even patch releases may replace the file and undo your handiwork. Recommended to make a backup copy of commands.cfg first, and name it something you will remember.

Scrolling down in commands.cfg you will see there are many commands that are not active, like the radio. A typical active command looks like this one:

Inactive entries either have the "key0=" line preceded by a semicolon or no key0= line at all. The inactive radio toggle command you are looking for is number 561 in the file, and looks like this:

All I did was to "hijack" a documented but inactive key. I used the "N" which in prior releases was a shortcut to display the recognition manual. Command 44 has it in its present inactive form:

I simply copied/pasted the key0= line from this entry into the radio command section, removed the leading semicolon to make the line active, and (this is optional) placed an "s" between the two commas to force the game to use SHIFT+N instead of just N. Cmd561 now looks like this:

Note that "Contexts=" is explained at the top of the file. I suppose if you made this 1,15 the radio would work in the bunker too. Might be nice.

Shift+N now invokes the radio - same radio found in SH3. Check your game's sound options page to make sure the radio is checked and the volume slider is up.

The one technical problem I found is that the radio's hover text is goofy. It correctly displays the source channel name and number, but above that there is some nonsense text about ending the current game session. No idea where that is coming from but using the radio will not end your game.

No doubt the developers wanted to revise the radio completely, probably make the one in the boat's radio room come alive when clicked, but ran out of time. In my opinion, having the SH3 radio pop up in SH5 really uglies the compelling SH5 atmosphere. And, sadly, of course you can work the radio from the conning tower, bridge, engine room, etc. Not good.

Perhaps one of the real modders here will engineer a better way to implement use of the radio...? :hmmm:

I am on the first patrol after the tutorial, Im supposed to patrol a spot on the english east cost. Now when I've reached that spot it still says incomplete :( What to do?

Welcome aboard mm-artom! Basically you just need to patrol near that spot for X number of hours, 72 I think maybe? Once you've done that it should mark as complete. Then you can radio in and either do what you're told to do next, or patrol where you'd like. Remember to keep enough fuel to get home! :salute:

Ok thanks for the quick response! It would be good if the mission said to patrol the area for 72 hours then there wouldn't be any confusion :03:

EDIT: I just realised my CO2 levels arent dropping even though im at the surface! And i have the 1.1.5 patch...
EDIT2: When i saved my game and loaded it again my CO2 levels were back to normal, maybe just a little bug ;)

The question is, how close do you have to stay to the patrol pinning point? I have yet to get a misssion complete in the Western Approaches. Doesn't seem to affect my play or score but it would sure be nice to complete a mission every now and then. :DL

Looking at the campaign files it's 70km or so for the coastal patrols and 250km for the Atlantic patrols. The effect it has is on your renown. You gain renown points for completing these patrol objectives. Now, renown doesn't seem to be as useful as it was in SH3, I'm half way through Happy Times and I have over 30,000 renown and nothing to spend it on.

THanks, I Have been working on the campaign files and mission editor but haven't figured it all out yet. CUrrently I am trying to figure out where the frigates and corvettes are for the mid ocean mission. I don't know where the engine is that determines when and where they spawn but it's got to be in there somewhere. I have yet to find either a corvette or a frigate in a mission, only destroyers:nope:

I found the corvette/Black Swan/destroyer patrol! It appeast to generate at Reykjavik Iceland (one of the worlds best kept secret holiday spots which I highly recommend) and runs generally north/south of the end of the Reykjanes peninsula I encountered them north bound on 22 September 1941. The easiest way to get the corvette and frigate is to find them at anchor in Reykjavik:D

Well I found a way to jump down to the main deck instead of climbing down.
Position yourself at the ladder opening like usual, face forward instead of looking down and then strafe towards the side and just keep going. you will go out a ways then drop straight down to the deck.

Now if only I could figure a way to jump through the bridge hatchway.
In the heavy seas I've been in this entire patrol it seems, that damn hatch has slammed shut and locked me up in it so many times I now fear going through it.

Hehe, oh no..........no teleporting for me. Im like Bones on this, that thing might just as well scatter my atoms all over the sea as anything.:D

Nahhh I'll keep trying, im sure if I can jump down off the tower, surely there's a way to jump through the hatch. Besides, I've always wanted to.:O:

But heck im just happy to have a hatch to go through, even if it does slam my head once in a while.:damn: Anything's better than just blinking to the next compartment.

I'm stuck on the first mission (after the tutorial). I've chosen the east coast as a mission and sank 50+ ton, I then returned to my home harbor (the one near Bremen, it jumped from Kiel to there) and when I arrive the commander simply repeats the mission objectives from the first mission about poland invasion blabla??!

What do I need to do further in this mission ? Taking the west/south coast as well or ?

ALso, the initial mission brief is the same throughout each Campaign, i.e. Total Germany. Western Approaches, so you can hit the "Skip" tab at the top of the map to skip the speech and get right down to selecting missions.

Observe it's position (direction from your ship and range to target) over the course of time and connect the dots to get it's course.

But that doesnt work when I want to know the course of a ship that is further away than I can see and I dont like estimating range with the... the... the thing you use in the periscope... it always gets messed up. Plus its sometimes impossible to identify the ship! I mean there are 4 troop transports that look exactly the same! :nope:

You could use HyrdroHunting (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=167351) to find that information without ever even seeing the ship. You can get their position, speed and course with it. :) It's a little tricky through, but when it works it's really great!

Your other option is to just head towards a contact when you first hear it. Mark it's bearing on the map, then head directly at it. After 10-15 minutes listen again, see which direction it's moved, mark that bearing and head towards it. This will give you a really basic idea of general direction and since you're constantly approaching the contact you'll eventually get into visual range.

You don't need to use the standimeter from long distances, you can get close to the ship without having to measure by anything more than eyesight. Once you're close enough and ready to plot an attack, then you can worry about measuring it exactly.

ddgn had a really nice manual targeting video that showed how most of your measurements will be by eye rather than instrument.

Well if it's farther than you can see, then go by the sound contact. drop down and let the sound guy get a line on it, then simply observe that line for a bit.
Put a marker right at the tip of that line, and then see where the tip moves from that point. then simply draw a line with the ruler to establish the course. You can also determine the distance as well with the ruler.

Sorry if this has been asked before, but I could find nothing. How do I stop the blinking hint buttons from appearing at the top center of my HUD every single time I load the game? I already know how to move, to time compress, etc. I just want those to go away and never come back, but I can't figure out how.

No way that I know of to elimminate them altogether, but just click on the icon at the top of the screen, then close the window that appears and then it wont come back as long as the current session is being played.
But they still will come back upon save and reload.

Just take a few seconds to close them out, but you will have to do this every time you start.

I really need help with the "blockade of germany" mission. It says to sink 5 ships along the northern patrol line. On the map it shows the line, but doesnt specify what kind of ships im supposed to sink.

Also says to sink 1 aircraft carrier patroling around the british isle. It shows on map where the patrol area is in a red circle, but i have been patrolling for ages and havent found it yet. am i ever going to find it?

I am curently on the date: December 05 1939, it says the deadline is March 01 1940..

So does anyone know an approximate day or time you come across these ships? any help would be great.

Hi, I was 1st based in Italy at La Spezia but during one of my missions the base changed to Piraeus in Athen but the base is still red? The entire area is in German control but I can't Dock there? The Base icon tells me that this is my base but the base icon is still red and has been for a couple of months (game time). I can go to other bases to refit only? Now I was at Malta and completed 50000 tons of cargo and 1 Carrier. I was searching for the Battleships in Force A searching the area indicated but I haven't been able to find any Task Force there? I saved my game there but when I try to start the game the game crashes. I have to go back before I attacked Malta. My game keeps craching when I restart the game?
Please help?

You need to roam around that red line and look for lone warships (warships without merchants and not in task forces).

Also says to sink 1 aircraft carrier patroling around the british isle. It shows on map where the patrol area is in a red circle, but i have been patrolling for ages and havent found it yet. am i ever going to find it?

Yes, it's there. By the way it's surrounded with a lot of warships and you will probably notice planes in the air. If the plane will spot you 2-3 warships from carrier's escort will try to intercept you.

Look for troop transports, right in here is where I catch them traveling in pairs. Just got to keep dropping below surface and checking the sonar until you catch them passing through. :)

Cheers guys got that all sorted..

Just thought I'd note that, the troop transports you have to sink are the ones that show up as a red diamond (warship) on the map, not the red square (merchant) as i was sinking about 8 troop transports that didnt count towards my 5 ships i needed, but the warship ones do count.

Also, found the aircraft carrier, seems i passed it a few times without noticing, its guarded by 7 destroyers..

One more problem though, I've completed both the 5 ships task and the aircraft carrier, so the "Blockade of Germany" mission should be over now right? No...after messaging the bDu they keep saying to patrol specified area, and theres no area specified on the bloody map! :06:

I screwed up one time by sinking the ships and filling up the bar on the mission tab before patrolling one of the specified areas for either a certain amount of time or sinking a ship within a certain distance from it. I returned to port and didn't have the option to advance or patrol a specific area after that. Ended up having to start a new campaign. :cry:

Hope you didn't make the same mistake I did. :)

Ehehe...whoops :oops: Thats exactly what i did..
Ive completed the mission before doing the simple patrol, so i did it backwards now it doesnt know where to send me, just keeps saying to patrol specified area, but like i said ive already completed that, and the "blockade of Germany" missions..so I have to wait until March 1st 1940 to begin "operation wesurbung" or however its spelt..:DL

Another typical UBI bug...why didnt they specify that in the first place! how are we supposed to know the exact order to d othe missions, what a load of crap!

Yeah, it is actually in the stock game this time. We traded our compass, gramophone, radio and depth sounding equipment for it

Don't know if any of this has been covered (don't have a lot of time so haven't read every post) anywhere, but was messing with the stock ui and found some things.

Compass: Lower right corner of the speed selection there is a tiny button looks like two arrows chasing each other in a circle, click that and it brings out a heading readout.

upper right corner of of your speed indicator you will see your return to course button.

Depth sounding: Below the crash dive selection on the stock UI is a goofy looking button, thats your depth under keel button.

Additionally you can select "advanced controls" to manually select depth in meters and speed by knots. toggle button for this is under the return to course button its nice as i dont have to shift key anything, all i need is one click away.

Still haven't found a gramaphone yet, or any commands for the hydrophone operator yet, but still blindly fumbling through the stock ui (not gonna worry bout mods just yet till i see what all ubi is gonna bring to the table first)

I saw that change too, as im on that mission as well. It used to read "Sink 5 ships".
And I can only assume since the only ship I've sunk up here that counted was an "Armed Merchant" that AMC must be "Armed merchant Class".

But I've only found one so far, and I've been up here for uhhh, well I've forgot how long but it's been quite a long time probably two weeks or more. I keep finding merchants but not these armed ones.
BDU has repostioned me twice now, but the second time it didn't indicate a new location and says objective complete even though the white bar on the mission description box isn't full but only about 1/4 for the 5 ship portion. Nothing for the carrier as I have yet to go down there where it's supposed to be. Still trying to finish up in the north.

As for the Aircraft carrier part of the mission, I thought i saw a post somewhere that the is only, a certain time frame that she is in the patrol area?

I sunk two north of Scotland, where they eventually travel to from Loch Ewe, a third on the way to Loch Ewe and the other two as they left the spawn point. When I was there there was a destroyer west of me in the main harbor and two more around the spawn point, so rather than get stuck in 13m of water, I waited just before the exit and got them as they passed me. So not sure if hitting them while 'docked' would count or not.

The aircraft carrier I got in the English Channel, south of Plymouth. I'd killed one just south of Loch Ewe and it didn't count. I killed another one docked in Plymouth and it didn't count. I finally caught one traveling through the Channel and that one did count.

The recognition plate system is pretty good. However, there are occasions, as there probably were in real life when you are not certain of the exact ship, but are certain of its nationality. I encountered a task force in happy times including two battleships. It was night, poor visibility. I also couldn't get into a good AOB position and ended firing one torp from 15 degree astern at the second battleship, which exploded and registered immediately sunk. Bit lucky. I couldn't identify the ship, which looked like the Queen Elizabeth, but I am certain I sank that in Scapa Flow much earlier in the game. In real life news sources and general intel sources would have provided confirmation of a sinking maybe weeks or even months later. Is there any way to check within the game or save-game logs to see what you actually sank?

Thank you Sandbox element of the game seems to be buggy then. Supposedly what you do in the game should have an impact on the outcome of the war. Not much point wasting torpedoes on capital ships if they merely spawn again. It would have taken at least a year to build replacements (more likely adapt an existing ship), plus time for trials and commissioning.

Nope, there doesn't appear to be much in-boat interactions other than station transitions (like the hydrophone station or observation scope) or doors/people. No clicking on switches on the attack scope to open doors before launch or anything like that.

Oh well. I will have to content myself with going to my bunk and then clicking on the button. :-? Yeah, that's a little OCD, but the biggest thrill for me is that feeling of "almost" being there and I like to preserve that fragile illusion. :smug:

on I was refering to is on the right had side of must about every screen but I should have remembere that I am using DarkWraiths GUI and I haven't looked at the stock screen in a while. If you hit F1 I believe the log is there,, the "m" key if I remember correctly. Sorry I forgot i wasn't running stock:oops:

The book icon loreed is referring to is TheDarkWraith's editable Captain's Journal. The icon for it is there, but it's not active quite yet.

Nope, there doesn't appear to be much in-boat interactions other than station transitions (like the hydrophone station or observation scope) or doors/people. No clicking on switches on the attack scope to open doors before launch or anything like that.

Is there a way to Mod interactive (clickable) things inside the boat???

e.g. captains log, switches and gramerphone etc.

I'm hoping there is. There's some switches in the control room that light up and you can click on them, but they don't do anything. So I'm hoping that indicates the ability to make an item in the sub interactive, but not sure how to go about that. :DL

Best if you're in port, but if you're impatient like me, go a head and try it while on patrol. :) Just not things like a new damage system if you'd saved while damaging something for example.

im on the narvik mission.....sink 5 ships, sink all BS`s recon Bergen...

I have sunk 5 ships...actualy 17 around narvik.....

I have sunk 2 caps and 4 DD`s

I have been in Bergen taken a few nice shots "piggys" sank all ships close by (couldnt help it)

But it stil say i have to sink all caps in Norway waters......I have been roaming now for 3 ingame weeks....

Only met the 2 BS and there escort...sank 2 caps and 4 escorts...cant find any other cap ship....im closing on deadline got 4 days left...in total for this mission i have sunk 36 ships including the 2 caps.....

Im stuck........heeeeeelp meeeee.....lol.....

I requested the mission from the commander for to sink 50000 tons in Brtisht costs.. First of all the game gave me a patrol point.. I sunk one mercant in that area.. Then I received a radio massage to return back to the base or go on patroling...

I patrolled and sunk maybe 100000 tons of mercants.. The mission doesnt finish.. he bar under the mission never becomes full.. Actually nothing happened to the bar..

In my Second attempt I returned base after sinking a mercant.. I talked with the commander and requested the same mission.. I sm sgsin turned to a new patrol point.. I sunk again more than 50000 tons of mercants... again Nothing happened..

How the mission will finish?

I am stuck.. I am sinking the ships in the correct areas...

What could be the problem..?? PLS Help...

4 destroyers patrol the entrance to Loc Ewe. That is where the AMC spawn, I have gotten most of my AMC's west and southwest of the Faeroes.

ok but i sank the destroyers, however ran out of torpedoes and was wondering do they spawn INSIDE the harbor or OUTSIDE the harbor. and can you kill them in the harbor if theyre docked and still have it count?

I sank a two in the harbor and they did not count for me. Unfortunately, I have never been in or near the harbor when an AMC spawned or returned.

Sounds like you've been reassigned to another port. Most likely, you need to go to Wilhelmshaven. Look for the large blue diamond-shape icon with the U-boat silhouette on it.

I'm a big fan of the More Commands by Dialog mod by Athlonic. :rock: With this, you can "tell" the Navigator to return to course. Plus, a lot of other commands have been added to the dialog boxes of various crew members. I love the interaction! :D

Which voice mod with Identify Target do you have? I have noticed a LOT of options from SHIII now gone in SHV. Also, the key map that you can look at isn't even close to accurate. Half of the buttons don't do what they say they do.

If you're talking about using the PrntScrn button on your keyboard, that image is saved to your clipboard. This will hold only one image at a time. To save the image, you need to open a paint program, such as the one that comes with Windows, paste the image into the program, and then save it wherever you like.

In the stock game, the recognition manual comes up when you lock onto a target. The XO will give you a line of dialog with various options underscored. Click on the option that states Unknown Freighter (or something like that) and the manual opens up. This will allow you to flip through the pages and click the check box of the ship you're targeting. :salute:

There is an Improved Recongition Manual mod which has the manual tucked off to the left side of the screen. This manual works like the one in SH3.

As for the Plot Search Pattern: as far as I know, this has to be done manually. :O:

I'm new to posting on this board so please forgive any errors in protocol. . . I've been ordered to land an agent near Londonberry. I approach as closely as possible to the landing point (which is located inland) and stop within 200m of the shore. I am unable to find out how to get this guy off of my boat. None of my my officers' dialog boxes appears to have an order for it and I have waited all night for the agent to leave the boat. Is there some action that I should be taking? Thanks in advance.

Operation Weserubung appears on the map in March 1940. If it's earlier than that just patrol around till the date is reached.

Hi Guys,

I've tried everything: setting the torpedo running depth to minimum (1.1 meters), switching the magnetic detonator on and off, firing salvos. Nothing works! I'm using the G7e electric torpedoes for all my shots (don't like the bubbly ones). I've tried following the running torpedo with my avatar view to make sure that I don't miss only to watch it pass under the destroyer's keel every single time. Help!:wah:

Well, it is not a new problem there were some ships which were unsinkable no matter how you tried even in SH3. Just ignore it, and find another target. Also G7e torpedoes were the worst ones, it is historical fact. They were having problem in maintaining depth. Just you got a load of duds as per game scenario. Hope it will help.

First of all: Cool forum! Helped me very much, but I still have one problem. I'm playing one of the first missions, the block of Germany (or similiar name, you know what I mean I guess) and I have a problem:

As soon as I reach the patrol place my fuel is somewhere around 50%, this means I can't do **** when I'm there since I have to get back to base and since the resupply is denied all the time (Not suprised that the germans lost the war, they are treating their sub captains like ****! Or, they were).

Anyway, is there any way to get passed this? Without playing with unlimited diesel (that's just boooring. :D)

Im sure you know that going at half speed and under conserves more fuel? and you will ALWAYS be denied resupply until operation drumbeat, which is WAY WAY far ahead of blockade of germany. Plus ts trans atlantic, and you can only resupply at certain times. any blue base can resupply you on fuel.

One more question:

At the mission "Blockade of Germany" you are told to sink 5 AMC ships.

What is AMC ships, how do I find them?

When I try to find enemies I just patrol around wasting lots of fuel, this isn't the "right" way to achieve this, right?

Thanks for quick answer, but this doesn't solve my problem - I know how to request a mission, in fact I requested one successfully. My problem is: I can't accomplish the "sink 50k tonns" mission despite sinking more than 50k tonnage. :)

Honestly I don't think I saw any line. Could that be because I play on 100% difficulty? Or maybe I just missed it? Where should I find it?

EDIT:
Now, that I know what to look for, I think there is a white bar that is fully filled, like on this screenshot:

Does this mean my 50k mission is finished? If so, I have a few questions:
1. Why is the iron cross below "British Waters" mission in the top-left corner empty? (in my Polish version it says "Brytyjskie wody").

2. What does it mean "Mission failed - user exit" on the below screen:

3. Why does it show that I sunk 20 merchant ships when I sank only 8 (1 paptrol) + 4 on the training patrol?


These questions may be trivial for you, those with big SH5 experience, but I'm still not familiar with the interface and its strange features.

Hi, I think,in my great ignorance:), that most of people like me had same problem as you,until...we begun to play game on internet...
It seems to me game goes on ONLY updating your progress with UBI server,and this means...that you could not play cracked game.
IMO I solved buying stock SH5,no prob anymore! I really hope you have same...problem because if you already did it,I don't know how to help you.

Fortunately that's not the case, as I have a legal CD bought in a shop (this is why I got crappy Polish version and now, with mods, all the text in game is mixed Polish/English/German pidgin).

However now, that you mentioned Ubi servers - I read in some other thread that synchronizing saves _could_ break my saves, and I tried to switch synchronizing off. It doesn't seem to be switched off, as the game tells me every time I start it that it synchronized my saves, but I'll make sure synchronizing is on. I doubt this will solve my problem though. :hmmm:

However,here, when I start game,if I go in settings in launcher,it asks me if I I want to activate online saving,but I close pop up without modifyng anything because it works and I don't want to know at all if they are already activated or not,to avoid troubles like yours for example,so try to do it and tell me!
the only thing I remember is that I skipped tutorial before first mission,like many people and when I saw progress bar on mission going on,I was very...satisfacted:yep:

The problem solved itself after I installed "Lite Campaign LC 1.2". Now I got the cross for British Coastal Waters and all seems to be ok. I installed the mod mid-campaign, so it's even more surprising that it helped.

Sure Abd, you can start a mission,
then come back to base ENDING patrol to refuel and recharge torpedoes,
then talk with admiral and choose same mission again,
and continue to sink ships until mission's white bar is filled;
when you did it, you can choose for another mission and go on to accomplish macro objective.
You can choose same mission all the times you want,even if white bar is completed,but be careful not to go over it's end date

Sure Abd, you can start a mission,
then come back to base ENDING patrol to refuel and recharge torpedoes,
then talk with admiral and choose same mission again,
and continue to sink ships until mission's white bar is filled;
when you did it, you can choose for another mission and go on to accomplish macro objective.

I found out that you don't even have to request a mission to be able to accomplish it. While doing 100k tonnage mission I unintentionally bumped into a carrier with 6 (?) escorts in the fog, and after a loooong chase sank it. Now the "sink a carrier" part of "Blockade of Germany" is accomplished, even though I didn't request this mission before (was only doing the 50k and 100k tonnage).

You can choose same mission all the times you want,even if white bar is completed,but be careful not to go over it's end date

If the white bar is completed I can't request the mission (my only completed mission is 50k tonnage and it doesn't have the request button, while the other 2 missions do).

This tells me one has to be careful not to accomplish a mission before even requesting it, as it would most probably screw the campaign. :06:

Sorry Abd,but I told you that on my personal experience,because:
I say you CAN ,not must come back on same starting patrol base,in fact you can find awesome base to resupply during mission, and go on,until white bar is filled;about me, I always try to come in my base,if fuel lets me do it;

It happened to me too,to sink some war supplies ships that had nothing to do with my mission,but seeing white bar progressing on another one.
Good,so I save time...

then,that curious admiral,on my game,lets me choose same mission even if is ended,and I could choose it to increase the total amount ok sinked ships.( in fact, weeks go on and you risk to go over end date..)

by you, I discover it's a bug on my SH5 installation...but it's so and maybe it's only about first campaign,because I'm only in the second one..

I understand that personal experiences may generate mess for someone else,but it's just to help and give some more information for who need it...:)

Click on the cross on the map that shows you mission briefieng and some arrows on the map. Now UNZOOM - you will see the area for the carrier marked with a circle SSW of Ireland. I suppose you were looking for it in the wrong area.

Even in the proper area it may not be so easy to find it - I was just lucky and plain bumped into it before I even started doing Blockade.

I don't know about pre-heat, as I got it switched off. As to flooding, this is crucial for good timing: unless you flooded your torpedo before you ordered launch, it will take a few seconds to flood and then open tube doors upon firing. The few seconds this will take may make a difference between a hit and a miss. So if you target/fire manually, always prepare your torpedo before (just as was done in real life). This may not apply to auto targeting/firing, but I don't know.

Technically flooding is just letting water fill the torpedo tube (tubes are dry normally, as torpedoes are regularly put in and out for maintenance). Letting water in serves a purpose: it lets the tube gate be opened, as after water gets in, the pressure inside and outside are equal. Before flooding water pressure from outside would prevent gate from opening, and you would be stuck with a running torpedo in the tube.

I'm having some problems with the mediterranean fleet (Force A)-objective in the Mare Nostrum campaign, basically, I can't find any battleships or even a task force. Is there any good place to look? like all the other objectives in the game, the area actually pointed out on the map seems useless to patrol.

I just found one about 100km NNW from Oran, still looking for the other one. And any merchants. And carriers. There are lots of TFs with cruisers in them though, dive to periscope depth and do a hydrophone scan every hour, can't miss them.

That's Force H, not Force A :) Didn't find any battleships in the Force H-area either though, but I encountered a whole bunch of task forces.

Nevermind, I just found a battleship, slightly to the east of the area marked on the map.

Well, I just sunk a battleship at about 200 miles East of Malta, just as I gave up looking and went to look for harboured merchants. It didn't count toward anything, so I guess that one was Force A?

I know you have the spread angle to fire on multiple targets or one large one but I was hoping to pick out unique targets in a convoy....

Nope, don't think so. You select a target, get a soultion, fire. Then you have to pick another one and repeat.

TDC in game is only capable of working on 1 firing solution at a time.

However for convoys only 1 solution is really needed - as long as all the convoy ships travel with same spead and bearing. You just turn your scope and keep firing - if solution works for one target, it will work for the rest (provided you don't change your course meanwhile).

Only after you scare them and they scatter in panic (I love this SH5 feature a lot) you will need more solutions.

Hi I'm a 56 y/o/kid and am enjoying SH5 but I am noticing something odd about the mediterranean campaign and was wondering if all users see the same thing. The interplay between surface vessels in the Atlantic was great but now I have moved into the med. I've been there two weeks and have seen a total of 2 merchant ships. Warships all over the place but to try to sink 500 k tonnes? Map contact update has only revealed 2 merchants, sunk one. Wherever I get repositioned to is like a desert. Plenty of aircraft though. I dive immed. Any opinions?

I founded one north-east of port Algiers and one sunk at Gibraltar..

The option to use German voices with English subtitles is available when the game is installed. When installing, go to the Custom settings and select the German voices. This is the easiest way. There is probably a way to hack the data files, but I do not know how to do that.

How do i get rid of that annoying horizontal bar above the ships that appear,especially after you have attacked it with torpedoes,you see that bar appear,i assume it's the damage meter for the ship.Also how do i get rid of the orange marker above the u-boat when I'm underwater?

The horizontal bar is indeed a health/flooding bar for ships. The way to disable it is to go to the options menu when your in the subpen and then disable it in the Realism Menu.
The orange location marker for your submerged sub has to be gotten rid of with a mod. I think you can find it here:

Most of the larger mods delete the sub marker.

Look for the sub icon in port , its proobably in Willhelmshaven . Your port has been changed and unfortunately thae part where they tell you was omitted from the game .

The thing I want to do is change the realism during a mission. I went back to the harbor, ended the patrol, saved and quit to the main menu. Then I changed the realism, and continued my campaign. But nothing is changed :hmmm:

Anyone know how I have to do this?

From watching videos on SH5's manual targeting it would appear to me that it isn't so "manual." Would that be a correct statement? It seems like the game does a lot of the calculations for you. Are there any mods that take away these "assists" and makes it more like SH3 or SH4 manual targeting?

you can be full manual targeting if you want to. I would recommend playing the game this way :yep:

This would be a great game if the ships you need to sink for each mission where actually included in the game play. Northern Blockade only has two ships that actually appear that are considered part of the Northern Blockade advancement bar, but wait if you sink a merchant near the icon it reports "Completed" "new area assigned", but wait again there is no yellow icon now!!!! and if the sunken merchant ship did complete the assigned area why did it not advance the Northern Blockade Bar. Deadline cannot be achieved. 48+ hours of continuous circling of yellow icons with no noticeable advancement is so boring, if the game decides to add one, maybe...maybe not!!!!!

Think I'll just look for sim that delivers simulation rather than confusion and boredom

You need to install at least these 2 mods

With these mods you will find that your hydrophones will work on the surface . You can disable hydrophones on surface also . Radar isnt available until historically available date . You can upgrade your equipment such as hydrophones . With the user interface mods you get a shipping chart which you can use to help you find convoys . Believe me with the artificial intelligence mod you dont want to find any hunter killer groups .

The RADAR antennae really bothers me when I am not using it perched atop my bridge as captain ahab searching for innocent vessels that my slightly psychotic nature yields me to sink!

I see a slot directly below the antennae where it would slide into nicely and cease obscuring my view but I have no idea how to force it in there! I saw a mod on this very website that can do it with a SHIFT + R binding but it's a major tweak mod and quite frankly I have SH5 tweaked the way I like with mainly the UI Mod by DarkWraith and other smaller tweaks to that.

There must be some way I am simply missing to retract the RADAR antennae...

Any light shed on this would be very helpful!

i've never seen the radar antenna on my ship? =/ all i ever seen in this periscopes? where is the radar antenna located? is it the big thingy infront of the uzo? (the bonoculars on the deck) if that's it that's your observation periscope... you can lower it with the pgdn key, and raise it with the pgup key ^_^;

2) morale or some sort of problem. I use the morelemod.
It took 1 week, 1 day, 19 hours and 2 min before i could pre head my torpedoes again.... same for the special meal of the cook...... how comes? I did do a refit what i do more often recently since i am in the Med. Does this affect morale and performance?

You need mods to control the engines and also for manual tdc because the stock stadimeter is broken. Out of box, you can play only with the "align the dots" style.

oh, i like align the dots, it's fun and easy =D. i'm still curious as to what tdc means/stands for. all i know is it a work i can tell my officer to turn on/off, apart from that i don't even know what it stands for D:

Try MCCD (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=166236) for more crew command by dialog, its a really nice mod.

For manual tdc, start by reading the dedicated sticky topic (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom//showthread.php?t=164131). Once you get used with it, you will never return to the align the dots style. Align the dots will get you bored very fast, its a real gameplay killer.

i wounder what i did to solve this. I now point and shoot, forget the dots, when i aim i will see a yellowish line on the mini map what represents the trop line/course.

Would not know what MOD it is, maybe my settings are just low :oops:

that little yellow line is normal, i have it and i don't have any mods equiped, you probably just disabled the "dot" portion of it? or are not locking onto a target? or have realism turned up? or something like that, but i can definately attest to the little yellow line :D makes eyeballing it interesting to say the least >.>


and now i know what the tdc is/stands for :D
i like connect the dots/eyeballing it >.> gives it a bit more simplistic approach

i use green and blue screen techniques with sony vegas.
this is what i and my son do for fun between spelling homework and episodes of sponge bob square pants. big chuckle.

i use green and blue screen techniques with sony vegas.
this is what i and my son do for fun between spelling homework and episodes of sponge bob square pants. big chuckle.
there is more to follow. it is a very time consuming artform but i will post progress along the way on video thread. thank you for pointing that out to me.

Nope.

You can set the torpedo depth under the torpedo tube selection panel after your target is locked in identified. There is a vertical slider for adjusting the desired depth.

i knew this, but i ment, how do i tell how low in the water the ship rides? =/, setting a depth doesn't really do anything if i don't know how deep to set it D:
i.e. is this ship 3 meters under the water? 6 meters under the water?

I usually try to hit the first torpedo in the aft to knock out the propulsion, or under the keel midships to try to knock it out in one blow :)

Can I choose what eel I can load in each tube? Or, to put it another way, can I turn off the torpedo autoloading?
I found that it is possible to unload a tube, but as soon as the torp is unloaded, the AI automatically starts reloading it with the same torp, so I cannot choose white type of eel (steam or electric) I want to load.

If you want to see wat command are executed when pres a key on the keyboard then when you are in the game pres ,,F1,,. After that if you are pres pressing ,,left shift,, you will have more commands key displayed.


I think up and down arrow (gear up/down) it is changing the spead of your sub.

Ususally, after you fire a torpedo the events camera start (and close) automatically (no need to pres F3) - that i remember i had when i was plaing wit event camera - on.

You must uncheck the events camera in options WHEN IN THE BUNKER, after the tutorial, you must uncheck this again, as it resets. Hope this helps.

all these "mods" sound fantastic.
unfortunately, me and computers dont get along too well.
i am truly technically challenged.
i read the thread on mod installation and it was far outside my "comfort zone".
i am afraid i will botch the program and be left high and dry halfway through this project. (its happened before)
for me sh5 is touchy enough as it is.
the "free cam" mod sounded like just the ticket for me. apparently you can get the camera closer to objects in the game. i thought i could use the ships in sh5 with this mod. i have tried it in its current state but the image is too degraded after i zoom in on it. disappointing results.
i was hoping someone would know of an off the shelf decent sim that would be suitable.
you have inspired me.
i will read the mod install thread again and maybe grow some nads.

I don't think there are any keys assigned to this, as you may know, Q and E rotate the outermost disk, all other disks are manipulated with the mouse- you can not be paused in the game to move these disks with the mouse, I have found. Hope this helps.

Q & E will rotate the Attack course pointer.
Mouse will rotate the Target disc (grab near end of pointer)
Mouse will rotate the Bearing and Lead angle disc (grab on outside part of ring where the numbers are)
Compass rose rotates with heading changes of the uboat
Relative bearing is fixed in place

ok guys i havent seen a post on this yet so i figured id throw one up.

using the RAOBF every tutorial talks about dragging the wheel to the correpsonding locations. however i can drag the wheel...this would not be so frustrating if there was a way to adjust mouse wheel sensitivity...i swear i think ive seen smoke coming off that puppy before....

so is there a way to either adjust mouse sensitivity or drag the raofb wheel?

Whose UI mod are you using? This makes a difference.

Hold down the shift key as you turn RAOBF wheel with the mouse wheel.

Most campaigns do not have the re-supply option.
When you are on campaigns to US and South America etc - you get them then.
Later in the war they become rare again as the Allies started hunting them.

Yep it does, I think the only thing refit does is replace your torpedoes. It won't fix your hull integrity either.

And about sinking all the shipping in the circle area, are you sure you accepted the mission?

I don't know what you mean by the original version, but SH5 has loads of DRM software on it, and I don't know if you'll ever find a free copy that you can play properly. Try the link Zedi already kindly provided about 3 posts ago off Amazon, or one off Steam (http://store.steampowered.com/app/48110/) that I use.

Just type 'Silent Hunter 5 digital copy' into google and do some shopping! I mean Amazon is selling it for $4.60 which is like 48000 IRR. But as Zedi warned, do not buy a used copy!

You guys should be able to have a credit card in Iran. That can be used to buy stuff online. Its a bit hard when you do it first time because there is a lot of forms to be filled and good english is required. But with that credit card you can buy other games too and usually the digital copy of a game is cheaper than the one you buy in store, simply because the cost for printing the box and manual is cut off.

This sound maybe a bit complicated, but to make a pirated game to work properly and also stay safe from viruses and other troubles is much more complicated. But if your problem is that 16$ is too much ... I dont think that anybody can help you on that matter. I feel you and wish I could help more.

You made me curious and I had a search about this issue. And I had a few very interesting reading about ...

Iran is a cash society. Because of the three-decades-old American embargo here, Western credit cards don't work. No ATMs for foreigners means that we have to bring in big wads of cash — and learn to count carefully. The money comes with lots of zeros.

Is one of the reason I hate the politicians and politics, no matter what country or planet. And when I say hate.. I really mean it.

Anyway, just to avoid being off topic my advice for you would be to try playing SH3. That game is like completely free but I cannot get into details. Take your time and look around, eventually you will figure out what I mean. Not to mention that SH3 is a complete game compared to SH5 where we still fix bugs and add missing features. Wish you best luck and remember, we dont talk about pirated games here even if you have strong reasons to do so.

OK thanks to this thread I've finally found out how to get to the guns. Now I need to know how to make precise course and depth settings. When I get far enough along in the campaign to get radar, I like to run with decks awash to keep my profile really down.

Also, I really need to be able to set courses beyond going where I'm looking. We used to have depth gauges and compasses to set the course. Is there a way to do that?

I requested the mission(British Coastal Waters).I completed the objective(patrol designed area).I received a message(patrol another area or return to base).I sank more than 50000 tons of merchants.Then i returned to base and i did this again.but the mission won't finish and the line under the mission won't fill.
But the Historical Mission is not like this.when i complete the objective the mission will finish.

It's best to use the hydrophone at all stop or very slow speeds to reduce the background noise.

Don't forget that you need to be at periscope depth so that it is submerged.

The "F1" key is very useful as you can see all the available commands. Shift + page down will retract the observation periscope. Alternatively in the command room you can put your cursor on the periscope and hit page down to get it down :)

I think you should go under water to avoid them,You can't repair those engines.
If you want to fix them you have no chance.
