Bloody awesome modding matey :rock:the reflections as you have pointed out are flawless, this is really good stuff, congratulations
I wonder if they grabbed the lantern, so at night someone would see them or they will just drift on through the night, little light at night, and your thinking to yourself what the hell is that ?

You need to listem the sound - "ondulations sound...then "help", seconds latter "please"... With all together the feeling is really very reallistic.

what would be really amazing is to fire flares into the air from random life boats
but on another not regarding the sounds... are we going to hear the sounds from 1200 meters away? or will it be more realistic as in we have to be pretty close to them?
PS. Release this bloody thing already!!!! hahaha

This mod has gone from being very good to the frankly bloody jaw-dropping!! Excellent work Rubini! BdU orders you to not sleep until it's finished. ;)

Of course, you will see. The mod is ready. I will release it today.
Isn't possible to have flares just because we don't have real triggers on Sh3 structure. If Sh3 had some, the modders already would made a lot of things for sure...the majority of things is just all or nothing in Sh3. The unique trigger are the waterinteraction and very few others, what isn't enough and also non applicable in all situations.:yep:

Im already working with Rubini on the "elegant" version of the mod.
You folks (Rubini, Privateer, Phillip T., et al I don't wish to offend any of the other imaginative and skillful MODders that contribute to this community by omitting their mention) add so very much to gameplay by your MOD's. It is a shame that the original developers failed to invest the same time and energy to detail that creates such a total environment of immersion. Look at the excitement and interest generated from one aspect of gameplay as small as (not small as can be seen by the response of the MODding community here) as the way "debris" may be realistically generated as a victim vessel slips below the surface. IMHO, you individuals are an awesome group!
I can't wait to see this MOD in a GWX 2.1 version. Keep creating, pleeeeeeeeease?

If the original developers had invested the same time and energy that the modders have, the game would still not be released today.
It's a fact that no matter how much work they put into it, there is always going to be more that could have been done. And don't forget; if not for those developers there would be no game to mod.

I think that half the fun of the sim is that we can mod it. If we couldn't mod it, how long would we have played SHIII?

Great.
I have a question for you. How do you add additional pieces of debris and people, using Silent 3ditor? I see that the Lifeboat&debris.dat file has a lot of different nodes, like the barrels and the rowboat - how do you create an entirely new one?
Thanks.

@For all: mod updated for the second version. See first post!
@Iambe: nice to talk with you mate. I made all the files from scracth (exception the debris.dat where i only added some controllers). I didnīt used a HEX neither for one second for make this mod. All the work as made only using S3D and Wings3D. S3D donīt have cut, copy&paste yet...but it have the option to merge a entire .dat (or others sh3 files). So, is just a matter to prepar the files as you want with pieces here and there (or just adding directly any piece using the S3D add chunk option - a very powerful tool since 0.8x i guess). Always checking the ids and using the remap function. When you learn how to do this...well you can mess with any Sh3 file in minutes, testing, adding, deleting, renaming, re id, importing/exporting 3d objects, etc. Itīs a Paradise for any Sh3 modder!
By the way...can I ask to you for a better high resolution texture for the LB body?...the same that you made but just in high resolution (the botton part of that tga).:hmm:
Edited: i also just update the credits. Thanks for all the help mate!

Seriously, I could create water casks & ration boxes if you want. Most lifeboats and rafts had quite a few provisions on board - assuming, of course, that dockworkers hadn't stolen them in port. A handheld flare would also be a nice touch (but I don't know how to make luminescent textures).

Thanks for the response - I will work on this when I get the chance. I have managed to get a boat-shaped lifeboat to show up, but whenever I try to add sailors to the obj file it won't import correctly; I get that same error message in S3d about the vertexes. In other words, only the boat by itself will import. Would you like to take a look at it? If some sailors, ration boxes, barrels, etc could be put in the lifeboat, that would be quite nice.

another cool thing is that as long as you are on patrol, they stay there... so you can sail 100 miles away, and on the return passage if you happen to pass by a location where you sank a ship they will still be there.
also, i have noticed that sometimes there wont be any survivors. and the number of survivors in rafts seems to depend on ship size
I hit an oil tanker and it exploded BIG TIME and there were no rafts.
a few days later i hit a tramp steamer and a large merchant.
tramp steamer let out one raft.. but the large merchant let out 4 or more.
finally i submit this for your consideration. what happens if over the horizon, a ship is sunk by weather or another u-boat with its guns or whatever, you have no knowlege of the event until you pass by and on the one in a million chance see rafts :hmm:
although i think you have to witness the sinking for the debris to appear.

I was wondering if you guys could help me. I am still having problems with adding human figures to lifeboats. Whenever I combine the men with the boat I get this error message in S3d:
"One or more vertices is not mapped to a coordinate texture." :damn: :damn:
I have tried deleting the unsued materials in Wings3d and cleaning up the object faces, but nothing seems to work. Do you know what the problem might be?
Thanks in advance.

Iambe,
I donīt know if this reply will help you...
If all objects are already UVmapped then I guess that you will not have problems. My approach was to put the survivors on a separated file just because this way I can add/delete them, adjust their position on the boat and change their textures more easily and at any time. But if you combine objects on Wings3d that are already Uvmapped i guess that you will also not have problems. If they arenīt Uvmapped then you need to make it first.:hmm:

Yes, normally in the Sh3 engine the small ships have less debris and big ones more. As until now the LifeBoats are attached to few debris, then normally you will also have the same variation in quantity linked to the size of the ship.
I yet donīt had the oportunity to test the above scenario...but I guess that the debris will only appears when the sunk ship is at 30km radius from your uboat, this is a magical distance for Sh3 engine. So, if it helps at this radius , yes, you can encounter debris and LBs without expect them, what is good IMO!

The flares isnīt necessary just becuase isnīt possible to add them correctly in the game. Sh3 donīt have triggers that we can work on (or only few and rudimentar ones) so, isnīt possible to use them (flares) on LBs. But ration crates and oars could be add to the scene and will be good!
You couldn't add the same manner of flare that merchant ships currently have? Triggerd by spotting the player.

Kind of like "Pirates of the Burning Seas", eh Steve? I have seen your point made in other posts before and can't argue (note the SH3 enthusiasts panting away impatiently here for this MOD alone). If not for the absences in the original game software, I would never have become such an ardent viewer of these SH forums and acquainted with all of the skillful and talented MODders and gamers that contribute so very much here.
So, it isn't all negative (except for the lack of sleep it causes so many of us). :rotfl:

Did you use JSGME?
If you did, click on the folder named "LifeBoats&Debris_v2_A".
You should see a folder marked "Data" and another one called "Optional". Just enable the mod in JSGME and you're set.
Even if it is installed correctly you will only see survivors about 50-60% of the time, it seems. From my limited testing, sometimes I will have about 3-4 sinkings in a row with no rafts or debris. Ships that are broken in two will never release debris, and ships that explode or sink quickly seem less likely to have survivors. Just like in real life, strangely enough.

On my installation, small merchants almost always break up when they are torpedoed. The ship halves don't release any debris, when they sink, which means no survivors. Perhaps the files could be modified to change this.

Yes, you are right. I forgotten to put a warning about this: if the ships breaks in two, then in 95% of times you will not see nothing after it sink. This is another Sh3 engine stock bug. But when we make the elegant version of the mod (the one where the LB will appears before the ship sinks0 this will be also solved automatically because they will be not more attached to the debris itself, but to the ship body itself .;)

Here is a screenshot of the boat, still empty for the time being - basically, a naval launch swiped from the SH4 "Clemson" class and modified. Like the rest of the debris it seems to respond very well to the SH3 wave physics. I don't like the skin & will try to re-UV map it later.

If you are going to make the survivors animated will that hit the FPS rates on the game for those with low end systems? :hmm:
If so you should make an option add-on folder for those to have limited animations or none at all for the sake of saving system resources on those systems that can't handle the heat, Rubini.;)

So far Thunder has sent me 7 or so animation sequences I need to
resize and import.
They are not huge and have minimum frames so I doubt they will
eat FPS in any major way.
Thunder has done an outstanding job putting these together!
I think it's time he post you all some of the avi's he's shown me.
Now it's time for me to get them imported.
Real Life and other important things have kept me from
getting the final steps done.
I'm sure when all is said and done you'll understand the delays.
Take it away Thunder!
Show everyone what you have done!!

Just sunk 3 cargo ships and a Southhampton class cruiser out of a convoy. Weather was atrocious but it let me get in close. What a difference seeing the debris and lifeboats in the water, as the rest of the convoy sailed on, brings to the immersion of SH3!!

Correct.
We have not released them yet because they must be tested to insure
no CTDs.
Animation work and importing new animations to SH3 is not a given.
If we just dumped the first animations without testing?
And people hit CTD's?
I'd never hear the end of it.

Hello,
they did indeed. Even threw depth charges between swimming survivors when a U-boat was expected there. This was observed by allied crews and german U-boats as well. Survivors were often not helped - not by the other merchants because they had the order to press on, not by the escorts because they were supposed to hunt the U-boats, and also were afraid to be torpedoed dead in the water while picking up survivors.
In the first generation of U-boat commanders such an action would have been considered loathsome, but the de-humanizing propaganda of all sides had already done its work.
Later in the war there sometimes were some merchants following the convoy and ordered to pick up survivors, but this was more a helpless gesture in the ice-cold waters of the atlantic.

IMO a lot of the rescue ships did pretty good work, especially towards the end of the war. By 1944-45 there were dedicated rescue ships (like you mentioned) and better survival gear. A sailor in convoy had a fairly good chance of surviving a sinking as long as there wasn't severe weather or a dangerous cargo involved.
I read about several ships that were torpedoed while rescuing survivors, such as the Havbør and Godafoss (links below). To sink the Havbør the U-Boat commander submerged near the lifeboats of a previous victim and waited for the rescue ship to arrive. The men in the lifeboats tried to warn the rescue ship but it persisted in the rescue & was sunk:

Hello Iambecomelife,
thanks for the links, there is so much hearsay that it is good to see some real evidence. And while in one link the sinking was 1944, the other already happened in 1940. Hmm for what i have read most commanders would have refrained from sinking a ship executing a rescue, but certainly not all.
What i meant is that at a temperature of the atlantic, in any other than summer conditions, swimming survivors would be dead by hypothermia before they could be rescued - speaking of minutes here - even if there were rescue ships.

Hi,
this mod is really impressive. Thanks to all involved
I wonder whether you have plans to include wodden life rafts. I once read that using them was quite common because one could simply put them on the deck of the ship and when the ship sunk they just floated on the sea. Thus, they were available rather quickly (Probaly it would be the most realistic to put them in the debris because then they appear only after the ship has sunk). Unfortunately, my moddeling skills are too small to provide a nice model for a wodden raft
Cheers, LGN1

Yeah, ain't bilateral symmetry a bitch?
Maybe you could simplify your animations a bit by having a few sailors with some missing limbs that were blown off and these wounded were dragged aboard the lifeboats by their shipmates. Others might be lying prone in the boat due to exhaustion or injuries.
I've always wondered if u-boat crews ever benefited from scavenging the loose cargo from the debris of a ship that was carrying consumables, such as using a hoop net to fish out loose apples, bottles of whisky, tins of meat, and what have you. :hmm:
Sure would look rather nice if the cargo type of the ship had matching debris floating in the water for those items that would float.
Regardless of those finer details, you've all done a job already well beyond anyone's expectations.
I can hardly wait to see the finished results!
That reminds me. I need a plane ticket reserved to go visit Philipp, just in case he does carry through with his threat of keeping the Lifeboat mod to yourselves. :stare:

Yes - they would loot cargo sometimes. There's one picture of a U-Boat loaded with rubber tires that they swiped from a sunken freighter. When they torpedoed a livestock carrier they would sometimes rescue a few of the animals for fresh meat.
And I would like to create different cargoes for the ships so that we could have an appropriate debris field depending on what was on board-just like you said. Sadly I don't really know how to do this.

I have somewhere, pictures of U-boats bringing tires back to port!!!
So yes, they did take booty!!!
Yarrr!!
:arrgh!:
And Phillip does NOT have the animations.
So how can he keep them?
:rotfl:
Thunder, Ref and I are the ones that made it possible.
Ref wrote the tool I use to import.
Thunder does his form of magic.
I do the final hex work.
It's a 3 man show as I see it.
I also see a great area for new animation work.
;)
Thanks for the file BTW.

It's the alpha version.
It's really a beatch trying to get some timeing things
to look right.
I have to change some things so there is a timed pause yet.
We also have more animations in the works.
I had 3 more sent to me but we found they were bad.
:nope:
The that Real Life thing steps in and totally FUBARS all
time expectations!!
:rotfl:
But seeing as we have went 3 years to reach this point?
I don't think a few more days matter.

The Alpha animations helped Thunder and I adjust to each other.

Any glitches we have are due to file transfers and such.
But the import and attachment of the animations has
not caused a single problem that has been reported.

SH4's crew management system is worth the price of admission all by itself. The better-looking crew and environment are just icing on the cake. The much shorter loading times don't hurt either. Saving the best to last eh?.....Ok, here's my guess...
A) They will fire flares from the lifeboats?
B) They will strip to their pants and swim towards the U-Boat ?
C) They will take a sun spot reading and play with a compass ?
D) They will get eaten by sharks ?
E) After a while they start drinking sea water, go mad and jump in the sea ?
F) None of the above.
I repeat myself: I love the sound of this mod and the debris drifting around my victims. Rubini, great job and keep on going!

I presume your not using a screen capture programme.
Hit the Ctrl + F11 key and a bmp image will be saved in your SH3 folder.
Open it with an image viewing programme such as irfanview:
http://www.irfanview.com/ (it's free)
Now save it as a jpeg file.
Go to an image hosting site such as imageshack:
http://imageshack.us/
Click on browse and go to your jpeg. Open it and click on host it then the programme will upload it.
Click on hotlink for forums (1) and copy and paste into your SS messsage box.
That should do it http://www.psionguild.org/forums/images/smilies/wolfsmilies/thumbsup.gif

I think Jim made it harder than it needs to be. You can just use the onboard 'Paint' program to change file types.
Photobucket doesn't care; it converts to jpeg without being asked.
I dunno if it has been mentioned, but is it possible to make the crew's cries for help
audible over a longer distance?
As it is I only seam to hear them when I zoom in right next to them.
Hi guys,
Excuse me by the long delay...we were fighting against some techinal problems to make a new step on the mod followed by a lot of tests...but now we have it done...so I promisse that before the weekend we will have a new version ready that will finally spawn LB before ship sink and also LB with animations!
A special mention needs to be made: the animations only becomes a reality after a hard work from Privateer and Thunder!
This upcoming version also will have some few others goddies on it from me and PT.
Anyway we will continue to work on the mod until we have that LB with movement ready and bug free, probably into a future update.
See you (very) soon!

Yes, itīs possible and easy to do...but this will bring some side effects too, then we need a compromisse and the actual adjust seems the best until now.

You shouldn't be able to hear them unless close to them.
The human voice does not carry well.
On land, it carries because of reflective resonance.
Water, when above it?
Does not reflect sound as well as land does.
But you should be able to hear them with hydrophones for a fair distance.
Not sure if this was modded correctly.

I agree, it sounds (no pun intended) about right at the present setting.
I start getting the wobblies when I hear things like 'compromise'.....it sometimes means that some other part of the game has to suffer :o
:D
Hmm, well, I parked next to a life boat but could not hear them from the conning
tower. I could from the deck gun position because that was a bit closer to the life boat.
I was rather hoping I might hear them from several sub's lengths away....much like the
tanker scene in DB.
If it can't be done without problems, then that's that I suppose.
What settings would I need to look at if I wanted to tweak it my self?
Thankyou Very Much.

Looks great!!:o I've skimmed about 50% of this thread, so I apologize if this has been covered- maybe it could be added to the first post?
1- What impact does this have on game speed? IIRC I read somewhere that it was a small 900kb addition.
2- Can you impliment it while on patrol or in an existing campaign?
3- Do you have to worry about saving near "permanent" sinking sites? Does it cause the dreaded Save Game Bug to treat the floating rafts like they were ships and thereby screw up your save?
Thanks.

Strange, I sailed close to some life boats earlier and could hear the occupants shout for help quite clearly from the conning tower. That was also in heavy seas with rain and wind. In my view the current sound level seems about right.

I run on a system the just meets or is a tad below minimum specs for 2.1
1. I see NO impact on FPS. The animations are so slight, they don't even impact me.
2. I'd at lest return to base just to be safe. Should not effect current Campaign,
but back it up just incase.
3. They are not ships so in theory? Should not cause the Save Game Bug.
The few people testing the animations with the LBs have reported no problems.

I increaced the sound range to 1200 and removed most of the background noise/sea

Excuse me ...my bad english...but what is wrong with the word "special"? In portuguese this means a rare, good thing, something difficult to find... What it means in english?:hmm: And if itīs not a "good" word in english what I may use on its place?:hmm:
