Im slowly getting my head round painting the figures, and just bought few sets of Vallejo paints- aparently best paints for painting the figures money can buy.
I need to read some tutorials about them.
I dont want my figures to let the overall look of the sub down.

I found that wargames websites like Games Workshop for example, were good for tutorials. I got the Battle Games in Middle Earth magazine series, dunno if you remember it being advertised, but in each issue you got a figure(s) and a guide on how to paint it, that's how I learnt. I'll have a rifle through my wardrobe see if I can find any good ones and I'll scan them if ya want ;). I'll try and find some examples of the ones I've done too, I'm the resident figure painter at my local model club, but most of the stuff I do gets given straight back to whoever asked me to paint it. :)

I think, Siara, to maintain the standard of verisimilitude that you have set for yourself, you should consider sanding the men down to their underwear and making little sets of clothes for them from scratch.

Don't forget the Teufel tatoo on the WO's arm!

I will have 3 figures manning the 88mm.
Open torpedo tube doesnt colide with using the gun. Attacks were made on surface, and gun was used to finish the job- especially dduring first happy times.
There is going to be only tip of the torpedo visible from the tube, like it was open, but not shot out.

Some seams were filled with highly dilluted milliput. Washed the figures in warm, soapy water, and installed on the soft drink tops. Painted with just the mist of Tamiya primer, and left in the Rafaello chocolates box to cure.

Not Steve, there are the illustrations of "Andrea" that come in the catalog, but I think that these figures give them to the great U-Boote dynamism.

Siara: If you paint the figures in black, when you apply the clear colors, they will turn out to be a little darker, it is advisable to paint the figures of white or light gray like that they highlight more color tones, Especially the leather tones and, for example, the white clothes

Chaos Black- black colour primer, excellent for models with PE, and figure painting. Instead of priming the figures with Tamiya Grey, and adding the black base coat, we have all in one.
Aparently it is the best thing money can buy when the metal parts have been used for construction, as it stick like s*** to the showell.

The grey can is the Roughcoat- basicaly the primer with the texture. Ideal for cladded walls, rusted areas, or in this case for lower hull, with faded paint, barnacles, and salt residue.:03:

The lights for your next project look very interesting. I attended IPMS Nationals SMW Telford, England, last November, and there was a submarine like this, but it was opened, using the interior fittings and sections from Czech Master Kits and on the roof of each section it had a couple of LED lights illuminating the interior I can tell you that it looked really wonderful.

gandalf71
02-19-09, 03:25 AM
Hi Siara,

you should go for the warm-light white LED, on the right side of your second picture. Xenon lights werenīt so common on Type 82s in these times :O:

One hint for the wiring of the LEDs, especially for the motorcycle where concealing of the wires may be difficult:

In my slotcars I use "Enameled Wire" for wiring the LED lights, itīs available in different diameters (0.5mm and less) and should be available for a few bucks in every electronics store.
Here is a link of an online shop I found with a quick Gogle search in the UK, quite pricy though:

http://www.rrunner.co.uk/wire/qse.htm

This material is very flexible, basically it is used for coils in relais for example, and easy to handle, you only need to "burn" the enamel varnish with your soldering iron to strip the ends and solder them to the LEDs etc.

Michael

Siara
02-19-09, 03:38 AM
Good tips Gandalf!
the brighter of the LED`s will be replaced by the 1.8mm white LED - i just ordered 40 of them from states, and awaiting delivery.
The wires will be replaced also. It is only the mock up, to see whats needed, and corrections will be applied soon.
I like to get everything sorted before the model is put togeteher to avoid disapointment :yeah:
That wire is well expensive.:o

gandalf71
02-19-09, 04:02 AM
Yes as I said, itīs quite pricy. Here in Germany I use to buy such stuff from

http://www.reichelt.de (http://www.reichelt.de/)

or

http://www.conrad.de (http://www.conrad.de/)

You should search for "Kupferlackdraht" if you go for a german online shop. In the first one a 115m coil of 0.2mm wire costs 1,70€ and will last roughly a whole life :D, itīs also quite handy for repairing PCBs. Hope this link will work:

http://www.reichelt.de/?;ACTION=3;LA=4;GROUP=D87;GROUPID=1339;ARTICLE=961 4;START=0;SORT=artnr;OFFSET=16;SID=31qDip4qwQAR8AA Ecq9o04f395b06b3515b745f38eb199c2269a5

This copper wire in greater diameter can also be used for scratchbuilding steel cables, e.g. for tow ropes on tanks, I found a nice how-to for that once a while ago, Iīll have to check if I can retrieve this link.

Michael

gandalf71

I know there are a lot of experts on Uboats here , but I thought it is important to clarify a particular fact about this 88mm gun, is that it had the same controls on both sides of the gun so that the two crewman that were in charge of firing it could control it from either side.

Looks great! Is that "Filter" paint that gives it the kind of mottled, weathered look?

Yes. It is the filter from Mig-s stable produced by Sin Industries.
It gives the nice blend for the otherwise boring paint job.
Theres few different "shades" of the filter, and depends what you need it for- you can use either tan, grey, brown, or blue.
I used the grey in initial fading of the black paint, imitating the salt an sun effect.
Tan, and brown followed to give the worn, dirty look.
Oils and pigments should finish the job nicely.

http://img151.imageshack.us/img151/945/izolatory001.jpg

Real life picture:

I discarded the revells parts altogether, and designed the "mother" isolator from 2 separate oval brass discs, and after sloting each of them half way through the middle, soldered them together.

I've been trying to do my homework on building a VIIC, and have been reading up on the frame structure of this u-boat.

I've managed to ascertain that the interval of frames on both the hull and saddle tanks were equally spaced apart. Ok thats that sorted. However here's my next dilemma

The majority of photos of model builds I have seen, indicate that the oil canning effect on the saddle tank was two (+)frames apart. Unless my eyesight is really bad photos of the saddle tanks of the U-555 seem to indicate that they were one width apart in line with the skeletal structure
Can anyone shed light on why we have these differences and tell me which is correct?

Please help stop me from going mad and allow me to start building my u-boat!!!!!

Sledgehammer427
05-21-09, 07:09 AM
Use your modeler's perogative, I always build my models thinking about what I want to come out of it. if you want historical, use the U-555 pics as refrence. But make sure you aren't looking at pictures of JUST the U-555. Look at outher boats and see if there is a same pattern. Because between kiel and germania and krupp, who knows what kind of difference there was betwen the boats.

Thanks for your comments guys! I really appreciate it.
I came upon the stumbling block with the isolators, and Wink- the guy who tried to cast`em in resin can not do it, due to small size. The resin will not flow into cavities freely.
I need to design something new.
Another problem is- ive been busy with my latest project- the SF Kettenwagen.
Once i calm my skin down a bit i will return to the shipyard.
You can watch the progress on my new blog: http://mastermodels.blogspot.com/

After months of trial, and error it become clear that casting insulators in resin is just impossible. Their small size is a big problem in the resin flow, and in keeping the bubbles away.

Instead i contacted the guy in Poland called Wojtek Fajga, and we decided to photo etch the insulators on the brass sheet.

Hopefully soon i will be making some progress.
Stay tuned....:DL

BTW: Im still working on the Ketenwagen project, and is turning out prety nice.

Copper wire twisted for steel line, isolators from green stuff, and the wraparound tie from 1mm brass tubing. I think thats the right way o go about it- what do you all think?

Thanks Steve.

I had small break from the yard, as i was busy with some other builds.
But im back, and planning to finish the boat this year.
I managed to upgrade the insulators process, and made the wraparounds from the cotton buds, which have been stretched on top of the cigarette lighter.
Brand new blade allowed me to cut the small sections cleanly, without them splitting.
Fishing braid called Dacron from Drennan company as the line.
Custom made rigging blocks from sheet of brass, and wire, soldered together.
Threading the braid was the problem, but i have solved it with the use of thin copper wire. First i threaded the wire through the wraparound, and after forming the loop, the braid was placed inside the loop, and threaded back through the wraparound. Spot of CA glue on the braid, and loop was slid over it. After cutting one end, we are left with neat finish.

I have been following your threads on this since the beginning and your other projects on Master Models. Your obvious strengths in your work are one foreseeing what to include in your models or dios. Then your attention to detail (because the PE in never enough) is mind bogging. I have attended other modeling shows and have not seen anything that can compare. I have enjoyed viewing your work (and work in progress) like a reality show; just can't wait until the next episode. Your U552 and kettenwagen are my favorites.

Thanks for the feedback guys!

ajrimmer42- the driver figure is from Yosci, with Hornet head and custom built glasses.
Sentry figure is from Hornet, with replacement Hornet head, hands, and custom hand held sign.
I reworked the figures slightly- all the insignia, belt buckle, collar tabs, and medal are from Aber PE set, and Tamiya decals.
Hand held sign is soldered from scratch, as originally it was tucked behind the soldiers belt.

I've just discovered this one as well, superlatives fail me. I think maybe it's the 'giant matchstick' theory that's the right one, i cant imagine being able to physically do this kind of detail on a model, let alone have the patience to do it.

Siara,

What size are those insulators in real or 1:1 scale?
It is hard to judge their size in the photos because of the perspective. I am guessing maybe 8 inches or 20 cm.

I am working on my own 72 scale VIIc and I want to replace the kits versions as well.

Hi Siara, amazing build man, really amazing. :sunny:

Was given a 1:72 VIIC/41 for xmas and have started in on it today. Inspired by this and other builds I've begun by Oil Canning first - my gods that's a long process!

However, in doing so I am losing some rivet detail and earlier in this thread I noted you had the same problem but made a tool to fix same.

Could you or A.N.Other please explain the principle and method behind it.

If you're interested, Archer Fine Transfers and I created a rivet & weld detail set for just this very thing... to replace lost rivets & welds on the 1/72 VIIC kit.

Check it out here:

I, like many others came across this amazing project quite late. The talent, eye for detail and incredible tenacity of the builder are simply epic. Unfortunately, for reasons known only to the photo depository site, the pics of the last year or so have been deemed forbidden due to some supposed indiscretion.
That aside, has anyone seen or heard anything from Siara since his last post, over a year ago now? He mentioned he was moving back to Poland and was going to be selling off his larger collection items.
I think we can all agree to hope that there is nothing amiss in his life that has caused him to move, dispose of his passion and virtually disappear so suddenly.

Aktungbby- just go for it. I realised, if you don't try it, you wont learn.
I actually finished another sub before starting work on this type VII again. It sat on the shelf of doom for 3 years. I gather it was for the better. I done some models in the meanwhile to polish my techniques.
It happened some were actually quiet good, and won me numerous awards on the model shows. Some were widely published in the modeling press.
The time has come to finish what i started 6 years ago- i know some people were waiting for it to happened, some lost faith, some were just glad it never happened. So for them, and myself i'm on the mission to put the closure on it.

Great job on recreating a worn and tired warrior in the U boat you put together. This boat looks like it just came in from a long patrol. It's obvious you put a lot of time into this and hard to imagine a better job and example of a war weary U boat. Might this be a recreation of U-552 commanded by Erich Topp ?

Congratulations on such exemplary work. :Kaleun_Thumbs_Up:
