Bullnose.
Revells bullnose is in the wrong place, and of the wrong shape. The groove is also missing.

Hi Siara,
for almost 1 Year Iīm checking this thread for updates almost everyday and sometimes even more than once a day. Your replica of the early U-552 is...I can only repeat what others said before... a magnificent piece of work.
But the intention of my first "active" post in this Forum, is not only adding a name to the list of people, who are honouring your work, but also possibly helping to solve a kind of little mistery regarding that little "box" on the bridge (see your picture below).
I also read the post linked earlier on this page and there was a discussing regarding this piece, which seems to leave the function of that "box" unclear.
This box is one of the 3 electric actuators for the boatīs rudder, one is inside the command center (Zentrale) just left of the depth plane stations (actually they had the same electric actuators), this was for submerged operation, one is inside the conning tower, for surface operation at sea and the one on the bridge was used most likely for manoevering in the harbour.
You can see some reasonable photos of these boxes inside the boat, in the gallery section of U-995 on www.u-boat.net (http://www.u-boat.net). The 3 letters "BBC" are the abbreviation for the manufacturerīs name "Brown Boverie & Cie" a former Swiss electronic equipment company, today it is belonging to ABB corporation.
Looking forward to see the final progress of your project and hoping that this wasnīt the last post from you, regarding U-Boat models.
To be honest Iīm hoping that you are going to build the Type II, after finishing the Type VII:lol:...
Best regards,
Michael

The weather was kind lately, so modeling has come to the standstill.
Im planning how to position all the bits and bobs on the stand, and i came up with something like so:
http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/6766/stand008cl2.th.jpg (http://img187.imageshack.us/my.php?image=stand008cl2.jpg)
http://img254.imageshack.us/img254/4497/stand005jd0.th.jpg (http://img254.imageshack.us/my.php?image=stand005jd0.jpg)
I was thinking on making the welds using the tape, and filler technique i even made the little tool for the weld texture:
http://img507.imageshack.us/img507/6007/weldmaker002tn5.th.jpg (http://img507.imageshack.us/my.php?image=weldmaker002tn5.jpg)
But i suspended the thought, after one of my friends recommendet to me this site:
http://www.archertransfers.com/
They specialise in making nice transfers imitating anything from welds / 4 sizes / to rivets, vehicle markings, even stitching of clothing from I WW era.
I just ordered the set, so the work in the yard is on hold untill the parcell arrive.

Siara,
I love your idea of mounting the model the way you choose. I have a few suggestions about the overall compostion: I would make the board a little bit shorter and definitely move the awards closer to the smaller board. The way you have it now, IMO, the uboat badge seems to lost on the board.
This is just the Photoshop quickie:
http://www.mediafire.com/imgbnc.php/e479ce8ecacec336be9c58ccdae023c36g.jpg
Maybe balance the Knight's Cross on the other side with uboat badge AND U-552 metal cap badge:

Siara,
I would make the board a little bit shorter and definitely move the awards closer to the smaller board.
This is the part of the stand where i can not make any compromises. Due to the fact the glass cabinet will cover the whole boat to protect it from dust, and tightly slot over the timbers edge, theres very little to play with. Given the size of the model, which measures whole 93 cm long, i have to allowe at least couple of cm. spare on both ends- otherwise it will not look right. But i do like Your idea with cap badge. Do you know where i can pick 1 up?

@Siara. 2 cents' thoughts on the wood base ...
I notice you mention on your blog "I'm thinking of cladding the edges with strips of wood or aluminum".
IMO this would be good, although I'd be inclined to use wood.
Because the ends of the wooden base are crosscut, they'll have a different look from the long edges which are cut along the grain of the wood (ripped). Depending on how and where the model is placed, this different look could be more or less obvious. Even with sanding and staining/varnishing, the ends will still look "crosscut" versus the ripped long edges.
The workaround is to edge all round with a decorative moulding of the same wood (or can even be different for a colour contrast) and mitred on 45 degrees at the corners. Clamp and carpenter's glue should give a seamless fit and then all four edges will look the same. If you use a decorative moulding you won't have to router the corner edges. edit/add: Alternatively use just squared moulding, which makes clamping a bit easier, then router a decorative edge all round (I use a little mini-router with my Dremel which gives a nice small (about 1/8" although with that size of base you could probably go 1/4") routered edge.
Like I say just 2 cents for what it's worth. edit/add: btw the glass cover looks terrific.
edit/add: Oh and I just noticed you mentioned you'd be cutting the wood base to fit the glass cover. Thought I'd also venture the point that I'd be inclined to leave wood around the outside of the glass cover, i.e. with the glass cover sitting in a routered cut within the base. As opposed to the base sitting in a routered cut along the very outside of the base. Not sure if I'm saying that especially well and it may be what you meant anyway. edit/add (argh, last one): btw if you want to see the difference in what I mean, I can put up a couple of photos, just let me know.
Hope you don't mind the 2 (now 3) cents. :D . I sometimes get caught up in this as if I were doing it myself  . But any way you do it is going to be great, no doubt about it
I know exactly what You mean Bart8for3.
I always valued constructive input, and thats the purpose of this kinda thread on this forum. If i wanted to do it ONLY my way, and not been open to comments, or criticism, i would just finish the model, and than just show final shots of the completed thing. It has been the learning curve, and im still learning about the techniques, and stuff used to make great looking model. Hopefully the next one will be better, and much less time consuming.
Thanks for all the valuable tips you constantly throwing my way, and many of them are realy helpfull. I will take it on board.

Glad you got through that move, I did that two years ago, happy that everything arrived safely. Puts
It has been brought to my attention, that the line was attached to the pressure hull, by the means of double brackets.
I made the bracket from spare brass:
http://img380.imageshack.us/img380/4425/bracket005wd3.th.jpg (http://img380.imageshack.us/my.php?image=bracket005wd3.jpg)http://img380.imageshack.us/images/thpix.gif (http://g.imageshack.us/thpix.php)
Thin wire was soldered to the bracket in order to give it strength when mounted:
http://img380.imageshack.us/img380/2559/bracket006gl4.th.jpg (http://img380.imageshack.us/my.php?image=bracket006gl4.jpg)http://img380.imageshack.us/images/thpix.gif (http://g.imageshack.us/thpix.php)
With the screw:
http://img267.imageshack.us/img267/3707/bracket008wr8.th.jpg (http://img267.imageshack.us/my.php?image=bracket008wr8.jpg)http://img267.imageshack.us/images/thpix.gif (http://g.imageshack.us/thpix.php)
Small hole was drilled in the right place:
http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/9942/bracket010ub9.th.jpg (http://img219.imageshack.us/my.php?image=bracket010ub9.jpg)http://img219.imageshack.us/images/thpix.gif (http://g.imageshack.us/thpix.php)
Brackets glued in:
http://img367.imageshack.us/img367/1742/bracket011ur4.th.jpg (http://img367.imageshack.us/my.php?image=bracket011ur4.jpg)http://img367.imageshack.us/images/thpix.gif (http://g.imageshack.us/thpix.php)

After the brackets were glued in, delicate pressure was applied with the hot soldering iron to sink it a little flush with the pressure hull.

Curious ... what do you figure those padeyes (I think that's what they're called, but not sure) on the dive planes were for? For emergency rigging of manual control cables? For lifting (i.e. with a crane in drydock in case they needed to be serviced or replaced or whatever)?

Thatīs exactly what iīm asking myself. These eyelets are not visible on photos of other German WW2 U-Boats, like Type II, IX or XXI, but I couldnīt find a good photo of a drydocked Type VII so far.
My guess is that these parts were added after the war either by the Norwegian Navy (the reference photo is taken from U-995, ex KNM-Kaura) or during the restauration process int the early 70īs.
Cheers,
Michael
P.S.: I found a slightly better photo of this section at Flickr.com

I have not find the clear shot of the stern section of any of the type VII used during the WWII, so unless someone can prove me wrong- the eyelets are here to stay. We can not establish if the eyelets were actualy added after the war by nerwegian navy, so thats the only picture, and only proof of the existence of them. BTW it seems incredible that out of over 1000 boats lounched during the WWII we can not find one good shot of the starn of type VII.:damn:
Bart8for3- i think the eyelets were used for fasteninig the planes when dry docked.
After the discussion on sister forum, i decided to change the little green weld /which is the metal streep welded to the plane in fact / to custom made part from the 0.2mm brass wire - flattened, than shaped, and glued with CA to the plane. It looks like so now:

Short description:
"Egyptian cotton is noted through out the world as one of the finest cottons available. We are proud to be able to offer our customers this fine material for modelling purposes. All the following threads are 100% Egyptian cotton and are unbleached natural colour should you wish to dye them. The material has very low lint characteristics with a unique linen finish.
This material is over 30 years old and it can never be produced again. It's quality has to be seen to be believed. Made in Lancashire this material is renowned for its quality and was long thought to have disappeared, luckily the company that supplies us has found this treasure hiding in there stock room. Stock they did not even know they had it's so long since anybody has seen it! To that end we have now bought all the stock so as to be able to share this with fellow modellers."
Time for weld lines.
I didnt use the Archer transfers, due to complex curvature of the hull.

One more at the stern, and i can start heeling my fingers.:D
Last set of bollards.
No plate under them, as the deck is steel here anyway.
Bit tricky, because the Eduard deck had the set of bollards already etched in, so carefull sanding was required, as not to damage antislip surface.
But it worked.

This is going to be an incredible model when finished, with all the little details you've worked in. With all the multi-colored paint, unfinished parts, and weathering already on it, it kinda looks like an actual boat under construction in the dockyard. (Not sure if they would actually look that way in real life while being built, but hey, you could fool me... ;) )
It kinda looks that way. Especially with the traces of green filler.:D

Incredible work on that light!
Im glad you like it. Im happy the way it turned out.
Taday i completed the SG, part that was on my mind for months. I was thinking how can i strengthen the joint of the support arms.
And i have found the way.
First i have produced the 4 supports from thin brass sheet. 0,5mm copper wire was soldered to underside of each support. Boats hull was drilled in the right places.
Then i simply inserted the wires into the holes using CA glue.

Hinges on the hatches. As the hinge i used the stretched sprue, blobed at both ends with hot knife:

Thats great honour Neal. Im not being used to the limelight. Its nice to know people enjoy my build, as it is only the hobby for me, the hobby im passionate about.
This morning- before i have gone to work i made 6 brackets for the stern jump wires support.
Revells part is just plain three leged lump of plastic, and i decided to pimp it up a little- doing it the way i have made the net cutter supports.

Siara, with your permission I am collecting all the information you have posted through the years you have been building this u-boot, to have my reference book and guide when I start my U-boot.
I don't know if you have thought on building the 4 open sections offered by Czech Master Kits, but with your "magic hands" and clever initiave that would be a very interesting project...just think it...:D
Regards
Sabalo- just imagine, if i was to do the interior, it would have taken me well into next decade.:D
I have different plans.
After the boat next on my bench is BMW R75 in 1/9 scale- vintage ESCI kit from 1970.
Actually i own 3 of them- i may do one civilian, one AK, and one Wehrmacht in panzer gray.
All 3 of them with sidecars, and at least one of them is planned to have 2 scratch build figures- probably the wehrmacht one- 2 chained dogs- one changing the flat tyre, and smoking the ciggie.:yep:
Theres few more things rumbling inside my scull- Opel blitz, Gf 109 E1 in 1/32, SdKfz 11, SdKfz 7.... and so on.....
Well, thanks a lot for the masterly class on this model...I have still the hope next decade you will come back to the open sections...:D :D :D

Since many months Iīve followed your work.
Even If I live a thousand years Iīd never be able to make a model as half as good as yours.
I hope my U 82 will look at least decent when I finish it, but when I see your U 552... It will be a hard work.
Thanks a lot for sharing your work!
This is modelling at its very best. When you decide upon which level to keep on detailing you always end up with things you never thought of from the beginning.:D
BUT you have to finish without cheating and that takes some diciplin and time.:know:
A salute to your fine skills.

Thank you for your support guys.

Place where the conning tower, and capstan will be fixed i have masked using Maskol by Humbrol. That thing is brilliant- it will cover the area where i like the deck to remain unpainted, untill the painting process is complete, and then it will just lift off the deck giving me nice surface to glue the parts on.

Hull is primed.
I hoped to make the "oil canning" effect of the hull, and i think it turned out well. It took me several months to sand the hull, but looking at the pictures it was time well spent.
Tomorrow at good light i will scan the surface for imperfections, but from what ive seen now there isnt many.

Siara,
I would serious think about compiling your pics and doing a write-up for Fine Scale Modeler. You blow away 99% of the professionals and amatures I have seen published in there. AND as of last months issue they said that if you provide picts and a detailed write-up of how you put a SHIP (Uboat qualifies I think) "WE will be on that like white on rice" due to the shortage of ship subjects to publish.
If you dont already get the magazine, let me know (PM me) and I can give you the address to submit to. Heck you could just copy/paste all your posts and that would MORE than do.
BTW... if you cant tell Im a fan of yours....OUTSTANDING job!! I have a VIIC myself to build...but you have me scarred now after raising expectations so high :o
Thanks guys for good feedback. Highly appreciated.

Siara, if you don't want to enter in a competition is OK, but maybe you could think to present your "work of art" in an model exposition, it would be an opportunity for us to admire "in live" your model; pics are excellent, but notining can substitute the real thing.

The one i ordered before, had few minor issues, and i returned it to the glass guy. Instead of repairing it, he made the new one- and it is much nicer!
Obviously the wooden plank is going to be replaced by proper 1 metre mahogany wood plank and couple of brass finials when i finish painting the boat.

Siara, I've been watching this thread for a good time now, but I never posted before. But after seeing the masterpiece(and the rest as well) that is this machinegun, I had to congratulate you for your amazing work!!
my brother has this revel kit in the hold, and I'm seriously considering offering him the step by step process presented in this thread, as a gift for his anniversary!!
I cant wait for the paint to be applied!!! :p
keep up, the insanely good work!!

Wow, I never realized quite how big that model was until I saw that picture. :o Makes it look all the more impressive.
When this is finished you have to take some panoramic pictures so we can fully appreciate it ;)
Netcutter, and jumping wires supports have been fixed to the deck.
Sprue stretched on top of he lighter, inserted in the holes, and bulbed at the ends with the hot knife to form sort of bolts.

I hope that you are keeping a count of the hours invested in your work. I would really, really like to know, -just out of curiosity- what the cost of this model would be if paying it for the proper value of each hour of work (Not even counting materials!!): It surely is amazing
Now, when you refer to U-Boat 1/72 models you'll must refer to BS o AS (Before Siara or After Siara). I think this model and this thread will be the reference milestone.

Odd question about the AA gun.
In Das Boot I remember seeing a cable or something anchoring the gun in a fixed position when it's submerged.
I tried doing a google search but couldn't find any images to show...
Are you going to be doing something similar?
Fair Weather- its not the cable- it is the A- frame. When boat submerge it holds the gun in the horizontal position, and rigid, but on the surface it is unclipped, and stowes flat in the deck. Thats what im going to do- im going to glue it to the deck, an let the gun hung loose as on this picture of U-404:

Preshading.
Conning tower, and top part of the hull were preshaded using Tamiya XF-18 Medium Blue, mixed 50/50 with Tamiya Thinner (X-20A)
I thought the usual black will be too harsh under the very light base colour.
Bottom of the hull will get preshaded with XF-50- Field Blue.

Almost looks like some kind of tiger shark now :hmm:
I admit- it looks a bit harsh now, but when base colour is applied it should loose all of the harshness, and what we will end up with will be nice coat of paint, with only darker shades along the rivet lines, and weld lines.
Furthermore the filters will unify the surface, and oil paints will add the paint fading, and pigments the streaking.
It will all be sorted tomorrow- stay tuned.

How does shading work? Do you literally just paint over the top, or paint in between the shading lines? I've always wondered...

Siara, the level of detail is astounding! You are certainly a gifted modeler:yep: One question though. I started reading this thread midway, so I may have missed this. I was wondering if you included the pressure hull kit that is available for this model? I know it would only be seen if you peered through the vent holes, but since you're obviously a stickler for details, I would think you would have included this. If not, how come?:hmm: Just asking. Once again, magnificent job. Can't wait to see her completed.

Fish40, the answer is yes. I aded the Yankee Modelworks Pressure Hull, and modyfied it to look closer to original. All the ribs have been added, exhausts modyfied, mufflers scratch built, some piping rerouted, 88mm gun base built from scratch, anchor mechanism added along with the anchor chain, i also added stern steering mechanism, bottom part of the pressure hull to be visible through bottom flood holes.

Thanks guys for good words.
Im glad you like the boat.
Gandalf- yes i did remove the eyelets from the stern dive planes, because we all on AMP forum think they were added while U-995 was in Norwegian Navy.
I did copy what i saw on the pictures of U-995- unfortunately it wasnt correct for the early VIIC.
We have to be carefull using U-995 as reference. So many things are "modern".
