Thank You guys!

I done some more deck work. Comparing the 3 decks i have now im trying to build one - that has all the best features out of all of them. Its a lot of work, and the wooden deck is so delicate i need to be extra carefull where i plant my hobby knife next. It can snap at any moment- but im enjoying it, as it brings the new challenge in my so far standard modelers life. This is the first time im adding so much extras, and im glad You like it.

Take the perfectly good wooden deck:

More hatches on the stern section.
http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/715/hatches001op9.th.jpg (http://img141.imageshack.us/my.php?image=hatches001op9.jpg)http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/7859/hatches003jf6.th.jpg (http://img141.imageshack.us/my.php?image=hatches003jf6.jpg)

Because theyre just single hatches, and probably constant opening and closing aswell as threading on them made them stand out from flat surface of the deck i decided on fixing them to the top of the deck.
First i needed to sand them domn a bit. Modelbrass deck is quiet thick.
http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/9378/hatches005gp5.th.jpg (http://img101.imageshack.us/my.php?image=hatches005gp5.jpg)
On top is the sanded hatch.

The forward hatch needed the cuts because the slats didnt line up.
http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/7007/hatches009ta2.th.jpg (http://img237.imageshack.us/my.php?image=hatches009ta2.jpg)

The other hatch lined up perfectly, and no woodwork was required.

Hi again Siara, I have visited Loco blog too, it is very nice and interesting and he has a lot of excellent references there to build this U-boat. Maybe he will join you posting his "technique" to make this model.
I think I have almost all the "extra" items, etched parts, resin parts and books, but the information that you are posting here is superb, and as I have mentioned before, I think with all your submissions it will possible to organize an excellent handbook to produce a museum quality model.
Of course it is important to have your skills, it is not easy have the patience and dedication to make all the details that you have.
I would ask you if you could detail step by step when you start the painting and weathering process.
Just want to thank you again for this.

The circular hatch on the back of the CT. Comparing the pictures and the hatch i realised the round Eduard bit did not go all the way round the lid.
I solved it by scratchbuilding it again. I think it looks more like the original lid. I know the "impression" of nuts is slightly kinked.

One side completed. Out of all the ribs these buggers are the worst. Every single one runs at the different angle to the pressure hull due to the curvature of the hulls sides.

Hello mate,

Looks like a simple enough fault to fix, besides it's brand new and there is no reason why they should'nt just exchange it for a new replacement. These things ain't cheap and i'd be pretty pissed off if this had happened to me :damn:

I have three airbrushes and no compressor as mine has given up the ghost. Hence all the painting/weathering has been a bit of a 'How the bloody hell am i going to to get that effect with brushes?'

I also think that too much relience on an airbrush can lead to a model looking like it's been, er...airbrushed, if you see what i mean?

Hope all turns out ok with your faulty compressor,

Sav.

Have you started to weathering this part? The last pic looks like you had sprayed some "yellowish" effect to simulate rust.

Thank You Sabalo.

Rusting process continues. Ive added lot of rust pigments.
I had in mind the conditions under which the rusting process took place in RL.
I think the water would wash the rust particles all over the pressure hull, andd instead of vertical streaks i opted for large patches of rust widening towards the cavities.

Now that the deck is in place, exactly how much of that beautiful underdeck detailing work can you actually see through the limber holes?

Bill- everything in the midsection / long slot / is visible right through. That means the bow loading hatch, ammo hatch, 88mm mount, conning tower base. The rest of the stuff like anchor chains and KDB stem are also visible- but only as shapes. The weathering is not visible that much, but it gave me lot of practise, and i sleep better knowing it is there. The stern section is bit crowded with pipes- means less light.
Replacing the deck hatches for brass / bigger slots / allows more light through the deck, but not enough to appreciate the detailing. Would i do it again building another boat? Hell yes!

Yes, I know exactly what you mean... I have a couple of 'men of war' sailing ship models who's guns are fully rigged, even those on the lower decks that can't be seen!

OBTW, you'll be happy to hear that I've started on my 1/144 VIIC... I have all of four free-floods opened up so far (!), and I'm thinking hard about scratchbuilding a pressure hull shape just to have something other than empty space behind the open holes.

You never cease to amaze me!

BTW working on my 1/144 boat, I'm slowly opening up all of the hull holes but have come up with an issue at the stern. As you know, the kit is quite inaccurate there, and I don't have the advantage of photoetch to work with, like you:

Im afraid the 1-144 is too new, and theres not going to be much aftermarket stuff available for some time.
I did manage to find something for Your boat though:
http://www.modelimex.com/detail/eduard-cz/photo-etched-parts/1-144-u-boat-viid-rev

The kit is for the VIID version, but most parts are interchangeable, apart from the mine shoots.
I think You need to open`em up Yourself. I know the number of holes, and their shape are all wrong, and the only solution seems to be either make Your own set of PE / check the electrical outlets- they do have some PE starter kits / , or cut the bit of styrene to size, and start drilling in it. Once You happy with the design, just glue them on in place of revells bodge.
Fellow i know from different forum makes ALL his parts by etching the brass sheets- check it out:
http://pwm.org.pl/viewtopic.php?t=2639

Savvy never changed the holes on his kit, instead he just sanded them open, and i think it worked good.

I do have the VIID photoetch, and plan to make good use of it. For the ballast tank floods, sanding the forward floods (from the inside) worked well for me, but as you know the detailing at the stern is simply wrong.

I'll have to scratch my head over what to do with the stern holes, I can see going through a lot of styrene trying to get the holes 'just right'

Are You going for it Bill? Im curious what its like. If it is simple enough, i can see myself on the path of etching. It opens the whole new world to modeler.

The main air supply pipes extended abowe the deck. Theres real possibility the work will be visible through the holes in the CT decking if i opt for brass.

Sounds pretty simple:

How the Micro-Mark Pro-Etch
Photo-Etch System Works
You create artwork in a drawing program on the computer. You then print out the artwork with an inkjet printer onto the special film we include. Next you laminate the included photoresist material to the metal you want to etch. The film you printed on is then placed over the laminated metal and exposed to the noonday sun for 15 seconds or for 10 minutes under a 100 watt light bulb. The Ultraviolet rays from the sun or bulb harden the photoresist in the areas that are clear on the film. The black areas of the artwork block the ultraviolet rays and therefore the photoresist under the black areas is not hardened. The exposed laminated metal is then placed in a developer which removes only the unhardened photoresist. Next, the metal is placed in an etching tank with Ferric Chloride etchant. Those areas with the hardened photoresist protect the metal and will not be etched. The remainder of the metal is removed by the etchant.

The vents on the sides of the CT. Theres too many holes, as the Revell kit can be modified for specific U-boat. Instead of drilling the kit, and filling some holes, i decided to make new set of holes in the sheet of styrene.

Bah, child's play. You need to etch with HF (BOE) buffered oxide etch. I also have a plasma etcher.:hmm:

Thanks Sabalo, i just hope i live long enough to finish it. ;)

Port side of the CT.
I managed to divide the wall into 2 sections- double layer, and single at the front, which will be reinforced with few vertical ribs.

The step was added, as was the MG stowage. I have no fotographic evidence it did exist on U-552, but some pics show it on other Blohm Ł Voss boat from the same period.

Thanks a lot Hunter ICX.
Im planning on ordering the glass tank- once the build is done. Before that i cant guess the dimensions. I know the length, but what the hight gonna be i can only estimate.
Because it will be some investment i better wait till the job is done.
The tank / only 5 sides / will be placed upside down over the quality length of timber.
Ive ordered the Iron Cross with swords and leaves, along with replica U-boat badge, and they will find place to the sides of boat.

So far im still building it, and just got the Koki soldering paste- so i can solder the wintergarten. Highly skilled job- requires the best material.:yep:

That beer can's getting excellent mileage :D . How did you do the indenting for the non-slip surface? Looks very nice and perfectly to scale  .
Actualy the front plate was made from thiner tin. The thiner the tin- the better the detail of the floor pattern. It was indented by rolling the handle of my craft knife over the part placed on flat surface. Detail is slightly to large fir the scale, but im not bothered, as when painted, and weathered should "just" be visible to break the surface of the plate.

The hatch leading down to inside of the boat has the slightly protruded rim.
So ive cut thin strip of brass, roled it:

I know exactly what You meant Bart8for3. After looking at noninspiring hull for months i can feast my ayes on some detail at last.

Today ive received the parcel containing this item:
http://img58.imageshack.us/img58/7706/ubootbadge002zu6.th.jpg (http://img58.imageshack.us/my.php?image=ubootbadge002zu6.jpg)http://img230.imageshack.us/img230/9974/ubootbadge003zf1.th.jpg (http://img230.imageshack.us/my.php?image=ubootbadge003zf1.jpg)http://img409.imageshack.us/img409/4641/ubootbadge004pk3.th.jpg (http://img409.imageshack.us/my.php?image=ubootbadge004pk3.jpg)

It will find the place on the decorative timber, to which the boat will be fixed. Im still awaiting the IC with swords and leaves, which ill fix on the opposite side of the plank.

It has been brought to my attention, that im still missing one vital item on the periscope housing. The latch which keeps the hatch in the open possition. I will be replicating the part as soon as i get some reference.

Twisted periscope thingy take 2.

Not happy with what ive done yesterday, i had another go at it. This time i took diferent approach. Leftover from Modelbrass PE was drilled to required diameter, cut away from the sheet, and sanded around the perimeter to the point where my tools and ayesight didnt let me sand anymore.

I just received the new part of fotos of the inside of the CT, and im having good long look at them. No rush in the shipyard, the Euro just started, and weather keeps me away from the boat.
I will continue soon.
PS: Im in the massive tussle with the guy on e-bay over the vintage 1970 kit, and if i win i should have nice surprise for You guys. Stay tuned.:yep:

After initial excitement of European championships im back in the shipyard.
Im massively disapointed with the performance of Poland.
I follow England usualy, but they didnt qualify, so i was rooting for the team of my origin. Waste of time if You ask me.

Observation scope.
To remind You how the scope housing looked like before it was cut off.

Another 2 on their way to me. Ill choose the best 2 and sell the remaining kit back on auction.
Ill start when the boat is finished. I never start 2 models at the same time, as in the past some models lost the challenge to newer competitors, and never seen the finishing line.:hmm:

Really curious ... those last 4 pics, which I think is maybe where you're forming what I guess is the bulwark in the yellow cardstock form, and then the last pic showing it in place ... is that what you're doing and what's going on in the pic where the yellow form looks sprinkled with powder? is that brass you're forming?

Sorry for multiple questions. Looks great btw.

The yellow thing is just the sheet of cardboard.
It is cut to the shape of the outline of the CT. The 1mm slot houses the 1mm copper wire, securing it from twisting, while im sanding it to the profile of the letter D in order to get the nice bond, and to look neat.
Basic, round wire is hard to glue on without the ca ruining the edges. When is sanded it goes on without problem, and the joint is strong.

I glued the part of the unused Nautilus deck to the underside of the plug to get the right spacing for stantions.
Top rail, and 3 stantions are thicker 0,7mm wire- same as was used on top of the CT.
Rest of the legs were made of the 0,4mm wire.

Thank You for the kind words.
I will add the planks later. i think i give the plug a miss, as the overall setting will be WO and E. Topp on the CT with the watch crew, and 3 sailors as the gun crew.

... (speechless). That CT is looking so far beyond awesome ...

And now the railing. Beautiful job. Did the wire keep the shape easily enough? Or did you have to heat to get the shape to keep? I have visions of the whole thing wanting to straighten out, but obviously it didn't.

Thanks Bart8for3! ;)

The key in shaping the rail was, to wrap it first, around smaller diameter round object- in this case i used the Fahrenheit doedorant can.
When it sprung back a little it was tight fit on the plug.:yep:

Salt i picked with moist, fine brush, and deposited on wet surface of the model. After while it dries, and masks part of the surface. After painting simply brush off the salt, and what you should end up with is chiped paint with uneven edges. The wash brings out all the detail.:know:

I read through this entire thread last night. Took me several hours but was very much worth it. It was amazing to read and watch the progress from almost a year ago to what it's shaping up to look like now! Thanks for sharing. I used to enjoy building models myself. Everything from uboats to panzer/tiger tanks to my alltime favorite (and most well done) Flak36 88mm. This was when I was much younger though; haven't touched once since. This was a really fun thread to follow. 9 months progress seen in a matter of hours. Look forward to every new update now. I'm really impressed by your dedication and attention to detail. I never got as creative or crafty with mine. Strictly what was in the box, that was enough of a challenge for me at the time, lol.

I have brushe the first layer of the Sin Industries P240 Blue filter, and once dried, ill will apply another coat where needed. Unfortunately the light is badd this morning, and i need to wait till evening for better light to take some snaps.
The effect is so subtle, the pics need to be spot on for You to realize the change in color modulation.
One thing for sure- it livens the base color a lot, and leaves the nice satin finish.

The good news: it's starting to look like a u-boat.

The bad news: even with the larger pictures, you can't see the detail - it looks just like any other model.

But still, just knowing it's all there...:sunny:

I finaly got the wood i wanted for the stand. I got 1 metre long plank of mahogany.
All i need to do now is router the groove round it- ready for the case to be made.
I will router the recesses for the u-bootsbadge, and the cross. Im planning the plaque aswell- im having trouble in choosing what to engrave on it.
Type VIIc U-552 springs to mind- any ideas? Never done the plaque on the model before- what should it look like? whats the do, and donts?:hmm:

IMHO there are no real do's and dont's about the plaque. Big enough I guess to read from maybe up to a metre away? I would tend to favour middle of the base for placement and maybe if it could be angled/raised slightly instead of flat on base; perhaps on a shaped piece of the mahogany to match the plaque size on the front?

"U-552
Type VIIC"

... sounds good to me for plaque engraving.

That's a big piece of mahogany btw. Are you going to use the whole 1 metre length as the base? Mind you, I don't recall the length of the model, other than remembering it's surpisingly long.

... my 2 cents for what it's worth.

Thanks for input guys. The model is 93 cm long, and im using the whole metre of mahogany, because i will cover the lot with glass case. The edge of the wood will be routered, and the glass case (ordered the custom glass case today- ********* expensive ) will protect it from dust.
About the plaque- the simple things work best i think, and "U-552 typ VIIc" will suffice.

It was the choice between perspex, and glass, and believe it or not the "friendly" shop wanted 140Ł for perspex case. I managed to find the cheaper glass case. Not much cheaper, but glass.:smug:

I hope you're okay if I use some of your techniques for inspiration in my current build of U-673 (http://www.travel-net.com/~gcauley/U673). I wish I had found this kind of stuff when I built my previous U-625 (http://www.travel-net.com/~gcauley/U625) model.

I'm wondering how you are tackling the issue of lost rivets?

I lost a lot of rivets on my own U-673 when I was reconstructing the bow due to the puttying and sanding required for the cheek pieces. I considered using the Futch rivet tool to create the "indents" or "circles" of flush rivets, but I wanted to have them raised like all the others.

I ended replacing the lost rivets with smallest-sized Grandt Line rivets, but also see the Archer has "3D decal" rivets as well.

What will be your approach for the rivets on your CT ?

Good alternative is the cog wheel from the local watch repair shop. Chose the steel instead of bronze. Mind you - 2.99Ł gets you the complete thing, so theres no point in making the device enymore.

The case will rest on mahogany plank. So it will be protected from elements well.

As to the cost, i stoped tracking the spendings long ago, but my estimation is around 600Ł at the moment.
