Hi Lurker,
My D/L must have been corrupted. Deleted and reinstalled, works fine. Thanks for checking.
RR
RSRDC_P2_TM_V220 is not compatible with Ducimus TM 174 Beta patch. I will build a new version of RSRDC that will work with it shortly. In the mean time, if you download TM174 please disable RSRDC “before” you apply Ducimus new upgrades. If you re-apply RSRDC you will “loss” the new SubRon50, but all his other changes will still work.
Sorry Lurker,
Can you please indicate me where have you find the TM174 beta patch?
Thanks
I believe if you look at either the first, or last page of the TM thread, you will find it. Duci also indicates that this is the final work on the mod for him. I guess a well deserved rest is in order:yep:
Found it here in its own thread:http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=127595
Ooups!
Thanks!

This patch for RSRDC will allow you to run it with TMaru Beta Patch 1.7.4.
RSRDC_ P2_Patch1_for_V220 & RSRDC_ P2_Patch2_for_V220 is included
Install Instructions:

Failure to follow the install instruction will result in a CTD;
(1)De-install RSRDC v220 and RSRDC_P2_PatchX_for_V220
(2)Enable REL_Trigger_Maru_1.7.2 First.
(3)Enable REL_TMaru Beta Patch 1.7.4. Click yes to override the file conflicts.
(4)Install RSRDC_P2_TM_v220
(5)Install RSRDC_P2_TM174_Patch2_for_v220
When the “official” version of TM174 is released then a “full version” of RSRDC that supports it will also be made available.

Keep these coming , awesome stuff :D
When I offered up Komimaya's convoy history last spring, I hoped that someone would have the drive and determination to attempt rewriting the campaign layers using that research. Lurker has done that and more.
These new patrols using the rewritten layers are wonderful! Very nice concept...allowing the player to duplicate or surpass the results of the original patrols.
Excellent work Lurker! I look forward to Phase III and future patrol missions!
Cheers!:ping:

....RSRDC Patrol provided 10 missions that will interact with the RSRDC Campaign Layers......
I guess I need to be led by the hand....what does the above statement mean? I have enabled the RSRDC Mod and started career(s)/campaign(s)....
What do you mean when you say that these standalone Patrols "interact" with campaign "layers"??
Im a little confused as well, are these single missions sort of, do i need to be in port to play them?

2 questions. Do i download and put these missions in my single missions folder and are the stock single missions and war missions still playable after installing RSRDC phase2. Thanks.

Lurker,
May I ask a few questions about these ?
1. Do you intend to release more of these ?
2. I had thought about doing much the same thing for Gudgeon, Harder, etc. Coming up with the patrol area doesn't seem too hard. My question is how did you find and arrive at the enemy ship spawning choices ? Did you pick the merchantmen down to the exact class of ship ?

Not at the moment
After reading the different patrol reports (see link below) I create a mission with only the Sub in the associated area for the selected patrol. All the contacts that are generated are from the campaign layers (i.e. same contacts you will see during a normal career mission).

Hi NKVD...
This post isnt related to the RSRDC mod you're running but yesterday 1st Jan was the first time in months i've had a CTD and this was also by coincidence a deploy landing party or post pone pop up while i was in mid ocean. (this was an insert agent mission)
i restarted the game chose a new career same start date and got the same mission again but this time it ran fine.... go figure.
Currently running TM_1.7.2 with Beta patch 1.7.4 and a few minor tweaks with ammo etc :D

This is a general announcement about Phase II of RSRDC. After the release of TM 1.7.5 I will be releasing a complete upgrade to all versions of RSRDC. This will include all patches that have been released to date and will also include some changes to the convoy routes based on new info about IJN late war convoy’s and ASW. Also will add some offensive ASW that was conducted by 102nd Escort Squadron from Jan to Jun 1945. These changes are based on information from the “Japanese Anti-Submarine Warfare Report” from the Chief of Naval Technical Mission Japan Dated 8 Feb 1946 and Interrogation of: Rear Admiral HORIUCHI, Shigetada, IJN, Chief of Staff, First Escort Fleet from May 1944 to December 1944; Commanding 901 Air Group, FORMOSA from January 1945 to September 1945.
New version number will be:
“Stock” - V201
“TM175” - V221
“RFB” - V241

>>>After the release of TM 1.7.5 I will be releasing a complete upgrade to all versions of RSRDC.
Yipes, i guess id better get off my lazy ass, im holding up the show! I'll have the "official" 1.7.5 posted, hopefully before the weekend is out. Ill try for friday, or saturday. Whats holding me up, is the documentation.
Since this is the last version i intend to publish (which does not mean TM is a finished product, only that i dont intend to work on it anymore) im undecided on what i should do for documentation. Just update the credits and let it go, or write a full and complete as possible, master changelog on the files. I like to think any modder here can look in the files and see exactly what ive done based on the general descriptions ive given in the very terse changelogs ive kept. Writing a full changelog, id have to go through every individual file, and try and remember every little detail i did, and why i did it. This could take me a week or two, and i question if i have the energy for it.
Sometime in the future, when your nearly complete with RSRD, its my personnal suggestion, to Take TM, and intergrate RSRD with it, balancing the overall modpack to your satisfaction, and releasing it as its own entity. My reason for this suggestion, is simply concern for the end user. I really dislike files overwriting each other in JSGME on a large scale, and im always afraid of files getting messed up for whatever reason and leave want of a complete reinstall of the game. That and it would end the "what order do i install?" posts, and make things much simpler for the end user.

thanks so much for your help Lurker...........i think now that my patrol when the CTD happened was in mid 1942. as i am playing your mod on a fresh install and i have just seen my anchor icon disapear from my manila base while on patrol its already dec 1941.......so i asume that two large patrols later from the Surabaya base it will be around mid to late 1942.........
will continue to play and keep a good eye out for any CTDS and recoed so we can get to the bottom of it.....

Very nice mod indeed! But I have a question...can i change something in order to use a Tambor class sub (which I really like) in the task force? The Tambor class sub is originally in the SubPac which is docked at pearl harbor. Can I transfer it from the Pearl Harbor base to the task force which is docked at Phillipines so that I am closer to the enemy? (If you havent understood yet i want my home base to be in Phillipines with the Tambor class sub.) .I want to do this in all starting dates of campaigns thank you .

I really dislike files overwriting each other in JSGME on a large scale, and im always afraid of files getting messed up for whatever reason and leave want of a complete reinstall of the game. That and it would end the "what order do i install?" posts, and make things much simpler for the end user.
I agree
Second that!

Just out of curiosity, does RSRD touch anything that affects single missions (such as the Battle of Midway)? I've got RFB 1.4 RC1 and RSRD 115 installed presently and tried running through the BoM scenario and had no contact other than a large air group moving fast. I attempted to track them down at flank on the surface for several game hours but made no contact with whatever it was they were after. After checking the mis file for it I can't even find where the air group came from as the only vessel is the player sub, the only triggers and events relate to the player sinking things, and it doesn't matter which 'layer' I open.

Yes
The original .mis file interfered with the RSRDC “Battle of Midway” campaign layer. If you run the single mission, you will be going up against the same contacts that are created during a career.

Guess I'll just have to figure out which way to head then... I took a look at your BoM mis, it's extremely complex to say the least, quite beyond my meager designing skills. Good work.

Change logs:
- Correct errors in that caused SubPac units in 1945 to be given incorrect mission assignments.
- Corrected”DownPilot” SpecOps missions that prevent SH4 from generating a successful completion status.

- Added offensive ASW that was conducted by 102nd Escort Squadron from Jan to Jun 1945.
- Added air searches from the 901st Air Group.
The last three changes are based on details within the following documents:

A couple of questions, Lurker -
1) These are new, full versions of RSRDC - not patches ?
2) With regards to Foo's recent recognition manuals (v3) - are there any new ships which would affect the use of his recognition manuals?
3) If Foo's rec manuals are not usable in the new RSRDC, what about the stock rec manuals ?

Guys,
I've just reinstalled SH4 after a drive blow and i decided on installing RSRDC along with TM 1.7.5... all installed as per the correct way.. TM / patch / RSDC etc etc etc
on my first patrol i'm given 3 primary and 1 secondary tasks and i do them as required..
secondary task is head to Dutch harbor to rearm / refuel before RTB.... just where is my base?.... every place i put in there is only rearm / refuel... / postpone available and no end patrol but just keeps chucking more missions at me, is this how RSRDC works??? i'm asking this due to the fact my sub now has damaged bulkheads and from previous experience only docking in port fully repairs them (unless that was a bug)... can somebody enlighten me?
PS i know there is now a new version 221 so i will be trying this later.

I got the same patrol assigned when I was based at Pearl. Halfway to Kiska, my boat was reassigned to SubBase Midway. Check your radio log - your reassignment is probably in there somewhere.
Also, seems like I got three secondary assignments in the Alutiens <sp>, but never ran into any traffic at all (until I got to Dutch Harbor). Hope you had better hunting. ;)

OK, loaded up the latest TM 1.7.5 and RSRDC v221, game starts fine, first patrol dec 8th out of Cavite in Sargo class, orders to patrol Indochina coast, start patrol at sea, less than 100nm out of cavite the 'received message' icon flashes on the side followed by a CTD, reloaded twice and it happened in exactly the same spot. I will uninstall all the mods agian and reinstall after deleting all the saves and see if that bumps anything along. FYI

With core SH4 v 1.4 – TM175 and RSRDC v221 loaded, I’m unable to recreate you’re CTD, using the same step-up that you noted above (Cavite in Sargo class, orders to patrol Indochina coast). The only messages that are generated during that time frame are from stock SH4 v1.4. This test run was conducted on two different systems (XP pro and W2K) with the same result. Please review the mods that you are installing for the cause of your problem.

Thanks for the quick reply Lurker. I unistalled all mods (I only use TM, RSRDC and 1.4 compatible ROW Mods with Foo's recog manual for TM & RSRDC) THEN deleted all my old save games, reinstalled (TM first, then RSRDC then Foos recog manual then ROW etc) loaded up started exact same career, only difference was that after the patrol started I didn't immediately ramp it up to 4096 time compression, I let it cruise on 512 only, and at that very point where the previous CTD's occurred, my watch spotted two Jap recon planes, I crash dived away, resurfaced after dark and continued, and hey presto, no CTD, I'm wondering if the game attempting to process the aircraft contact at high Time Compression crashed it?? Anyways, running fine now, i'll just have to cruise at lower TC rates from now on!

From RSRD_P2_TM175_Patch3_for_v220\data\campaigns\campa ign\messages.txt :
19420715 1800 19420715 2300 1 100 60 0 @COMSUBPAC@^SUBPAC^&Op Immediate Traffic&[X]EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY ALL PEARL HARBOR BASED UNITS SHIFT BASE OF OPERATIONS TO MIDWAY ISLAND X
If this trigger worked correctly, you should have gotten this message on 7/15/42, and your Base of Operations would have switched to Midway. The Kiska Mission is available after 4/1/42. If you get too close to Kiska - You will be bombed!
I agree with you about the aircraft patrols - they are way too good. I did a test dive with my new Balao, looking straight down in the very clear and calm water between Midway and Wake while diving mid-day. I could see a very nice outline of my boat at periscope depth, but lost track completly at 100'. There's no way in hell that ANY pilot can spot you, even if he is only at 1000' and you are below 100'. If he's not looking straight down, the mirror effect of the ocean would obscure any observation. Maybe he's dropping his bombs (or DCs) on your bubbles by guessing where the trail leads (IF you're cavitating your props at Flank speed). They must be dropping SonoBouys (did the Japs have SonoBouys in 1942?).
As an aside: Are ALL of your torpedoes running too deep? Since I updated to TM 175/RSRD 220, if I set my torps deeper than 6' they will ALWAYS run UNDER the target. Most of the time by less than 3' under the keel. That close, isn't the magnetic exploder supposed to set off the warhead? Example: Target Merchant draws 15', I set the torpedo depth at 10', but the torp runs 3' under its keel. I know the Mark XIV torpedoes ran a little deep, but 8' too deep, all the time, is a little much!

@ Rodger Dodger
I'm currently running TM 1.7.5 and V221 as per Ducimus's and Lurkers last updates
Duci has said in a roundabout sort of way that the planes can see further than 9km and this may also depend on the height they are at.... now i've measured the contact distance on the map from when the radar guy shouts "Bloodyhell its an evil Ducimus plane bearing 165' long range" :rotfl:and these have been approx 10 miles out, now this is usually the time the hairs on my neck stand up and i quickly hit the radar and or map and see what kinda distance its at. I then order crash dive and then after say maybe 500mtrs all stop i then watched via external cam.. yeah i know.. bad boy... to see the planes dive in from height and proceed to drop cans / bombs on my original location... that has gotta be some damn good fix they get on ya at that range!!! I aint complaining it sure does add some excitement.. if you wanna call it that hehe.
as for torpedos i have altered some of the settings slightly but it also depends on what year your in as the default inbuilt faults get ironed out as the war progresses this can be seen if you download the Excellent S3D and look at the dates on guidance and depth stats.
All in all i believe Ducimus, Lurker and the late Leovampire and other modders have made this game what it should have been like from the start, my respect goes out to these guys.

RE Planes and other visuals in TM:
Ill let the cat out of the bag, since it will help lurker if hes not overriding my AI_sensors.dat. They have max visual distance of 20KM if i remember correctly. Conversely, capital warships have a max visual distance of 15KM. Escorts 9KM, and merchants or other small craft like san pans, 6KM. Knowing this info, spoils the game for me, so i hesitate to mention it. Its not that im keeping any secrets, i just honestly belelive knowing the hard numbers takes the fun out of it.
RE plane detection of underwater subs.
To undstand why it works the way it does, I want you to picture in your minds eye a circle, or a ball or some sort. In SH4 contexts, Place this ball on the water, and normally it floats on top, and does not have any portion of it below the surface, with the tip of the sphere being unable to go so much as 1 foot below the surface. All i did, was take this ball, and tug on it a little, so just a little bit of it, is below the surface of the water. In doing this, a overall portion of this circle is also pulled under water. Since its a sphereical object, the more i tug down, the larger the radius of this sphere is underwater. If i let up on the ball, less of the radius is underwater. Now, how much of the ball is underwater depends on how much i tug, but i really dont have any control over the volume of this sphere, only in how much of it i emerse underwater.
The sumamtion of this is, i can control the radius of visbiity, but i really can't control the depth. Normaly this visual ball has a 0 measurement below the surface. I "tugged" on it, -2.2 to -2.4 meters. That little tug, corresponds to a radius of around 3,000 metrs (give or take 1K) Similary a -4.x measurement gives me around 6,000 meter radius of this sphere that is now immersed in water. I have ZERO control over depth, the ball shape is what its shape is, all i can do is dictate the radius of exposure. Since planes need an X amount of time in order to detect something, and travel at a velocity that often exceeds that detection time in a given amount of space, i can only tug down on this sphere for so little, before the radius of exposure is so small, planes dont see anything at all because they zipped by too fast.

I'm currently running TM 1.7.5 and V221 as per Ducimus's and Lurkers last updates
I haven't made the move to the full installs yet - having too much fun sinking stuff to stay in port long enough, or hesitant to start a whole new career. I'll probably make the move soon, though.
'Bloodyhell, its an evil Ducimus plane bearing 165' long range'
:rotfl: Wish someone could make him say that. What a HOOT!
I'm usually watching the map (and cruising on the surface), so see them almost as soon as I hear the RO. With the changes made to the planes, I Crash Dive to 160', call for 1/3 Ahead, make an immediate 90 degree turn right or left, and continue down to about 250' before leveling off. Periscope depth used to be enough, but the 'New Japs' have Eagle Eyes. I haven't had any bombs or DCs even close using this manouver (sp?). I have always found it very irritating, even in the stock game, that the planes are vectored straight at me, almost without exception. They aren't 'Patrolling' an area, they are coming right at me. Paranoid?? I don't mind that they bomb where I was, but get a little suspicious of the AI when they drop their load right on top of me 1/2 hour, even several hours later. When forced down by a plane, I just stay there the rest of the day at 1/3 Ahead and 250', surfacing again after sunset. Needless to say, I try never to get into a position where I can't dive to at least 200'.
as for torpedos i have altered some of the settings slightly but it also depends on what year your in as the default inbuilt faults get ironed out as the war progresses this can be seen if you download the Excellent S3D and look at the dates on guidance and depth stats.
As mentioned, the Mark XIV torpedoes tended to be 'somewhat' unreliable. Would you believe Naval Ordnance felt that the torpedoes were so expensive that they were never 'live' tested before they were put on the new boats. BTW, a torpedo is so complex a weapon that they are almost 'hand made', and cost over $10,000 each to produce. Hence: Too expensive to test! So we were plagued with faulty weapons all during the usage of the Mark XIVs.
Torpedoes had faulty contact exploders; many times, a direct hit wouldn't set them off. Magnetic Influence Exploders were even worse. They would often explode premeturly or not at all. Unreliable Gyro Steering caused some to run away or even circle back at the sub. The depth keeping mechanism was, at best, accurate to +/- 3'. They, too, tended to run deeper than the setting. I'm sure the RL captains were even more frustrated than us gamers. :nope:
Maybe now that my boat uses the new Mark XXIIIs, I'll have better luck with the depth setting. What settings did you change, and what were the results?
All in all i believe Ducimus, Lurker and the late Leovampire and other modders have made this game what it should have been like from the start, my respect goes out to these guys.

Well this is the first time I've got all my favorite mods together and given it a real go since 1.4. TM,RSRD,ROW. It's also the first time I've played a serious campaign with RSRD. I had to stay up tonight in order to get ready for the night shift tonight and it was the perfect excuse to plug away for 8 hours with the wife asleep. :yep:
Wow I'm very impressed. This has to be the most satisfieng carrier yet and I'm only on my second patroll. My only dissapointment was missing the battle of Lingayen Gulf as it was on my patrol area but I guess my time in port borked it. Nevertheless I was still impressed that it was there. After which there was no shortage of convoys from formosa to Luzon, just as you would expect. Great job man.
Now if Werner comes out with a new version of NSM I'll be set.

Took about six tries, and finally found something. Followed for hours, with no radar, using flank speed runs, with sonar checks. Can't see anything for the rain.
Is that modeled in? Is it random? I remember there being squalls during the battle, but driving monsoons?
All, in all, when I did find them, at the right place, at the right time, WOW! That was exciting, AND nail biting!

I eventually did abandon the patrol area and headed south to Surabaya. Almost there and still no shipping activity sighted. It seemed almost like a glitch had occured and stalled the spawning process...
Annoying thing is I've still got a full complement of torpedoes (I sank the merchant with gunfire) and I'd be embarrassed to arrive home with full tubes...;)

Thanks, Lurker.
I eventually did abandon the patrol area and headed south to Surabaya. Almost there and still no shipping activity sighted. It seemed almost like a glitch had occured and stalled the spawning process...

The shipping there, it's just a "big" ocean.

I've had some patrols without contacts.
I play with 1.4, TM 1.7.5 RSRDC 221, various ROW mods, none conflicting with the first two.
My most recent campaign, USS Seal (Salmon) feb 8 1941 out of Cavite:
1st patrol: North of Luzon, pick up a soundcontact at long range, find a TF built around a Chitose. I counted myself lucky, and proceeded on an end-around to position myself 3000 yards of to the west of the TF track, lying still at Periscope depth aligned with the course of the TF (this way, I can shoot all tubes without moving the sub :know: ). I wait until the Gyro angle is about 90 degrees (torpedo track exactly abeam the target Chitose, and fish spread slightly for any incorrect TDC-entries, and I watch all eight torpedoes slam into the port side of the Chitose: 9000 tons of warship for the USS Seal!!
However, rest of the patrol (1 month!) no traffic, before I head back to Surabaja.
Second patrol (february/march 1942) not a single contact!!
Third patrol: Chokepoint operations at north end of Makassar strait: 3 Large modern tankers sunk within 36 hours = 30.000 tonnes :arrgh!: .
Needless to say. I'm enjoying TM+RSRDC, however I've had three 'bugs'(?):
1. I was able to upgrade USS Seal based at Fremantle, with the early conning tower in may 1942 with an SJ-1 radar. Is that right??
2. In august 1942, I get the cut-down conning tower, the inbase screen tells me I have an SJ-radar installed, at mission start I can see the holding brackets etc. on the front of the conning tower, however no working SJ radar!! Could this be a conflict in UPC files between TM and RSRDC?
3. October 15, 1943, USS Seal out of Midway with the late war tower, and an SJ-1 radar thanks to some savegame editing :know: .
I get the order to patrol the SouthChina Sea, after completing I get the order to proceed to position 125 NM NNE of Cape Engano, 2300N 12350E by 100 NM. However, the objective Star (with the 'flagpole') is at 2000N and 12330E. The second set of coordinates seems to be correct, as I get the next order when reaching within 100NM of that last position.
Could this be a small oversight in the briefing text?

IRT to the incorrect position for the patrol, that is a RSRDC bug and will be corrected in the next release

Hi just a query and observation re RSRD - I was cruising off souther Japan when I happened upon a large blip on the radar, I snuk up and found an unescorted carier trundling about at about 5 knots.
Needless to say I did the business and sank him with about 10 torps. Question, in October 1944 did Japan have any large carriers left, and would they have been sitting off southern Japan just footling about?
Next I finally managede to get myself one of them big five inch deck guns, but cant seem to get crew to man it when in port, there are simply no crew slots to assign crew to the gun
And another one - While crusing between Japan and Korea, I got a radar warning re a plane closing in. As usual while he was miles away I went to perescope depth then down to about 150 feet for good measure, ran slow and thought to just footle along till night time. About three hours later I decided to go top side and continue on my way, at about 90 feet, all the guys in my watch compartment just died, with no apparent hull damage, then I got reports that both attack and observation scopes were destroyed as was the deck gun and AA guns, and the AA gun crews were dead also.
Now there was no plane, no ship anywhere near me, I had the depth and all was perfectly nromal, is this a bug, I've also stated to notice a few other odd things like sound glitches and other stuff which seem to be happening more and more as 1944 progresses, could this be some sort of bug?
Hope you might clear this up

IRT to the above, the problem is a “stock” issue were in the Japs_Harbor_traffic.mis three is no one, but three DD tracks that have “generic aircraft carrier” list as the content of the track vice the correct content of “generic DD”. The problem has been corrected and will be in the next release of RSRDC.

Yay those mines are evil buggers. The other day I decided to take a peek at the minefields with the mission editor... I wish I hadn't. Many areas I had used as safe transit routes were literally full off minefields. Talk about ignorance being a bliss!
During the next patrol I was so paranoid about mines that I didn't submerge until it was dead obvious that I'd been spotted or would be spotted any moment. It wasn't really helpful either that the first patrol area was south of Bungo Suido and the second Korea Straits and Sea of Japan. Not many minefields in the... BOOOM!

Currently have no plans to use his ships. This is because I don't use "generic" ship types in my campaign layer. The amount of work to integrate them into RSRDC is not worth the effort at this point.

Nope, it does not, you can enable/disable that when you set your realism settings. What the MOD does do is remove all the unrealistic and to numerous ship and naval traffic that Stock SH4 contained and re-writes the campaign layers with historical numbers, and types of shipping/traffic. Excellent and must have MOD!

Yep, can be a shock to the system but you really feel the determination to get into position for the kill when you do make contact. It also makes the effect of finding a well used shipping lane more pronounced.

I seem to be getting an unusually large number of Night Flying Jap aircraft. This patrol is going to North of Luzon from Freemantle. The planes have been spotted after nightfall from around 1900 to after 0200. Then they start coming at me well before dawn starting at around 0400. I didn't think the Japs flew much at night. Makes surface night ops a little creepy, not to mention recharging my batteries.
Never had this problem before - the Japs would usually never be seen from an hour after sunset to an hour after sunrise. Even then, I would usually have to be within 100 nm of some base or other.
Also, these night flyers are not random - they are vectored right at me!

I ran into this problem with a Gar class boat in late 1942 east of New Guinea. I also got bombed at a depth of 160 ft. on the same patrol, but I think that was in day light. I've now learned that either you run at periscope depth with the SD radar antenna raised to get a warning or stay down at 200 ft. For high TC, 200 ft. is the better option.

Same here. Running TMaru 1.7.6 and RSRDC 221. I guess the issue was introduced by TMaru 1.7.6, since I don't remember this happening with 1.7.5 and RSRDC 221. I took a look into TMaru 1.7.6 airstrike.cfg and put Night Modifier=0.0 in, but to no avail. Reverted Default Air Strike Probability back to the stock value of 10 from the value 20 in Tmaru 1.7.6 - I still get aircraft vectored straight at me in the middle of the night quite often (in '42), yet the frequency is more bearable. Since TMaru is not supported anymore by Ducimus (my eternal gratitude to you, if somehow you're gonna read this), I guess this is as good a thread as any to post about this, especially since the issue came up.

The problem is probably in the TM176. It hadn't occured before I 'upgraded' from TM175. Frequent airplanes, especially leagues away from any land, was a problem that was taken care of previously, and hadn't re-occured until this latest upgrade.

Yep, me too. Heading up the slot to Rabaul I must have encountered fifteen or more nite flights, mid '43. I came across a lite cruiser with a bunch of DD's early dawn. After sinking the cruiser I evaded DD's and came up for some air. Three seperate flights were searching for me, this would be normal after a sinking in my opinion.
To many nite flights for me, :damn: so I decided to install :hmm: ParaB's tweaked air strikes  while still on patrol. Air traffic got back to normal with no ill effects as I continued my patrol around Rabaul.

Read the posts in this thread, but most of all: always use JSGME for installing mods in SH3/SH4. It will tell you instantly if mods bite eachother. Sometimes this is nescesary though: TM176 + RSRD + NSM4 will all bite, but in this order will give you the most perfect (imho) SH4-experience out there.

i have a question. What sources is this mod based on?
I mean i feel like it cuts out to much traffic. Ive played two campaigns and both ended by me geting kicked out of the navy for making no kills.
I mean i can go surfaced to tokio without ever seeing the enemy. I dont think this is realistic. From what i have been reading is that japs were very good at defending their homewaters. It was in 1944 when an US submarine was first time able to sneak through defence into japenese sea and found traffic like during peace time. They felt save and even used to have lights on.

From lurker's first post in this thread...
Phase II Overall Changes:
The major change is a complete rewrite of the “Single Merchant / Convoys” campaign layers that were originally in Phase I. Using the Senji Yuso Sendan Shi (Wartime Transportation Convoys History), by Shinshichiro Komamiya, RSRDC has recreated 1055 convoys from early 1942 to the end of war and rebuild all the single merchant and tanker shipping routes.

Make your patrol areas and complete each mission.....the game does not really care how many you sunk. I have yet to get booted out. I have returned to base without any sinkings. There is enough traffic IMHO. I see plenty of singletons and small convoys. I even get radio messages to convoys and they are there when I arrive.....if I look for them

Do you head straight for the radio marker on the map? I always estimate their future location based on the marker and try to intercept them, but I never see anything. That is how SHIII works... at least the vanilla version... and I assumed that was how it was supposed to work in SHIV.

It depends were I am and what time I will arrive. This is how I at least get in the ballpark. Once there I think of the most logical route they convoy might take. Usually it works out for me.
BTW, use sonar as much as you can....it hears farther than you can see.

I do not know what to tell you Werner, I usually bag 4-5 every patrol. Not bad really. The original stock traffic I was bagging over 80000 tons. Not very realistic. From the books I have read, RSRD is darn close to what the skippers experienced.

Good point. Not all subs were handled like the Wahoo going in and out of ports. With that said, towards the end of the war the convoys would hug the coasts for protection and the subs would go into shallow waters for them. Although ports were raided from time to time they should not be your primary place to shop for tonnage.

Make your patrol areas and complete each mission.....the game does not really care how many you sunk. I have yet to get booted out. I have returned to base without any sinkings. There is enough traffic IMHO. I see plenty of singletons and small convoys. I even get radio messages to convoys and they are there when I arrive.....if I look for them
I have had a few patrols, sometimes lasting eight weeks, where I never saw anything worth shooting at except fishing boats (neutral). Never got two in a row without a sighting. I really like the idea in RSRDC about getting multiple patrol areas for definate times. Suggestions for Phase III:
1. When RSRD runs out of patrol areas for me, send a 'personal' message to either return to base, or proceed to nearest base to refuel/rearm and continue patrol. I've spent several extra days in a 24 hour area, even with sinkings, and never got another patrol area. Finally gave up and returned to base when I ran low on fuel. Many times too, I've split to Darwin to refuel/rearm and continued patrolling.
2. When I send in my 0001 status report indicating I'm low/out of torpedoes, I should get a message as #1. I have sent status reports with '0' torpedoes, and recieved another patrol area. Guess I'm supposed to use my deck gun.
3. When assigning patrol areas, assign the furthest afield first, then assign areas closer and closer to sub's base. It seem to be the other way around, and really gobbles up the fuel. How are the areas assigned?
I'm usually in the Asiatic Fleet, and RSRD seems to be very realistic as far as traffic goes; mostly single freighters, mostly unescorted - pretty much the way it really was early in the war. Its a real challange to find them, though, without RADAR. You have to get within about 15 miles to spot them, and its a REALLY BIG ocean! 'Luck of the Draw' plays a big part.
I did get one HUGE convoy sighting (at least 10 merchant/tankers of all types, and four escorts) in the Java Sea. Too bad my S-Boat only had 12 torpedoes; it was really a juicy sighting. I did manage to sink 4 of the freighters, avoiding the escorts, and getting away with no damage at all. This has been the only merchant convoy I've run onto with RSRD. Seems pretty realistic to me for early war.
I love this mod! Eagerly awaiting Phase III.

I have had the same. Some patrols were like that. Yes, multiple patrol areas are great.

Getting no new assigned patrol areas should indicate to return home when you are ready. More often then not, the skipper was given the call on returning home. As long as you complete the patrol areas, Subcompac will not bust your hump over it.
2. When I send in my 0001 status report indicating I'm low/out of torpedoes, I should get a message as #1. I have sent status reports with '0' torpedoes, and recieved another patrol area. Guess I'm supposed to use my deck gun.
What I do is just head on home if I'm low on fuel or no torps. Again, if you did all the partrols but missed he last one assigned...you will be just fine. Also, you are just cruising home, the deck gun is for defensive measures to get you home. Unless there is a small salty that you can sink for fun.
3. When assigning patrol areas, assign the furthest afield first, then assign areas closer and closer to sub's base. It seem to be the other way around, and really gobbles up the fuel. How are the areas assigned?
Doing it the way it is really affords you more areas to patrol. If you go all the way out first, you have burned a lot of fuel for your first area. If you work you out to the furthest point, you have 3-4 patrol areas under you belt.
I'm usually in the Asiatic Fleet, and RSRD seems to be very realistic as far as traffic goes; mostly single freighters, mostly unescorted - pretty much the way it really was early in the war. Glad you brought up radar!!!! For those that say shipping is to little, wait until the radar is available to you. Your sub skippering days will be busy with things to sink.

i agree that stock campaign is unrealistic. But RSRD still "feels" like too little trafic.
I mean i get booted out from my carrier because i get not enough tonnage. That being not my fault - i patrol the area that i was assigned to but there is just nothing passing by. Meanwhile the japs are taking the entire landmass around. I wonder how they do that without ships...

What Flotilla and time period ?
I really like the level of traffic. For the first time I'm getting patrol and career tonnage totals which are within the ranges of how actual captains did during the war. Previously I was always ending up with the highest tonnage on the list...it was too easy, not enough of a challenge. This seems much more realistic (and satisfying) to me.

Having some trouble running this. DLed the mod (the stock 1.4 version), installed with JGSME. Only other mods I'm running are Dragon's Vargas Girls and a couple of radio mods. However, every time I start a patrol, it's only a limited amount of time before I get a lock up/crash.
Any advice?

well dont forget that we are the submariners elite already compared to real captains. How many patrols and carriers do you have on your list? Real captains faced the enemy for the first time, they have never been comanding a submarine at war before. Remember yourself when you first time got your hands on silent hunter and then imagine you did it at 100% realism and with all realism mods activated. This would propably be the feeling of a reel captain who goes out for his first patrol...
And then dont forget that real captains had something to lose if they did something wrong, their lifes.

i have most trouble with s18 campaign from the beginning of the war in manilla. After two patrolls japanese take entire south east asia and somehow they can always get their invasion force around my patrol area because i never see anything worth shooting at. When i arrive in freementale they say that my boat is beeing taken out of service together with me because i was not agressive enough. So what i am supposed to do?

realy i dont want to run your work down, i know stock capmaign is over populated.
But look at his: Ive been doing that for the last 4 weeks, ive seen a lot of planes every few hours even at night but no ships. Not even sampans left tokio during that time. If i was a battleship i could end this war in an hour. Thats just not right.
ps this is april 43 i have radar equiped.

From the readme of Phase I
Because of a design feature that prevents ships from spawning within 20km of ownship, you may see cases were historical events do not correctly generate. So therefore, as an example, if you are 15 to 17nm from the Shortland Islands during the Battle of Guadalcanal, some of the Tokyo Express missions may not generate.

hm well then you should try to find a way around it. Because the stock campaign seems not to have that problem. Being so close to japan shore in stock campaign is much more dangerous. I mean its just not right you shouldnt be able to sail so close to tokio and noone cares.

Anxious to try out your brand new NSM, eh Werner? ;) You do have a point about the spawning point limitation, but give this mod a second chance. In my eyes, it's as indispensable as...well, your NSM, and that ain't flattery (or any other word that you can think of that involves hind-parts and kisses)! On RSRDC phase I (and I doubt it has changed with phase II), I ALWAYS found a truckload of traffic in that area you depicted, though I didn't sail that close to shore. Try expanding your waypoints a bit to the south so the ships can regenerate.

From these quotes, it is clear that the issue in question lies within the game engine itself and not with this mod.
I would suggest taking the good Doctor's advice and place your waypoints farther south.

as i said it doest accur in stock game so it cant be stock related. Try to go to tokio in stock campaign.
besides that there is also no traffic elsewhere. There is some traffic but is extremely rare. I just dont believe that japanese almost took control over entire pacific area with almost no ships.
I haven't had any problems finding targets with RSRD. I ran into a HUGE invasion force heading toward Lingayan Gulf in Dec 1941 when I ran an S-boat career. :o I felt like I was trying to kill an elephant with a pop gun. :yep:
I find this mod a nice fit for me since it is based on historical convoy traffic derived from Komamiya's Wartime Transportation Convoy History.
I am sorry that RSRD doesn't please you. Perhaps you should try tater's Improved Campaign Layers, return to stock, or break open the mission editor to edit the layers to your taste.

I second that observion.
I did 2 complete patrols now from December 41 till April 42. Beside 1 large laskforce near Manila and fishing boat just outside singepore, there was not a single target to find. It feelt like skipping over an empty ocean.
My setup is: TM 176 + RoW + RSRD latest version + NSM 4.0

I've found plenty of targets with RSRD even without radar. I hang out in choke points, cruise along the coast near 200 feet deep water, and generally try to stay in a small area for at least 24 to 36 hours doing an expanding spiral. Let the ships come to me.
I forgot how many total I've got, but I lead the tonnage board after 3 patrols in June of '42 so the ships are out there.
Hi there
I don't post here often (as you can probably tell) but I do check the boards pretty much daily. I run TM, RSRDC and the latest version of NSM (thanks to all you fantastic modders!).
To Werner and others who are having trouble finding ships in RSRDC, I do sympathise. But, the ships are there - sometimes you just don't find them. I have had a couple of patrols, back to back with not a single contact. Yet other times I have encountered numerous ships and come back to base with vast tonnage scores, earning medals and promotions galore!
If you want to see just how many ships there are in this great mod - hang around in the Java sea on or about the 27th February 1942 (or there abouts I think) :yep:.
I encountered what can only be described as an armarda there. I had no torpedoes left so I just hid away at 200ft. I went to the external view to check out a task force I had detected. Zoomed over to it and saw 4 destroyers. In the distance I could just make out some more ships. went over to them and found a couple of Cruisers and some destroyers. Then from there I could see a weird shimmering in the distance. I zoomed over and as I got there I saw the shapes of well over 100 merchant and transport ships protected by small task forces. I say well over a hundred - I simply couldn't count them. I was amazed :o. I thought about going at it with the deck gun, but I doubt that would have been worth it. Clearly this was the invasion fleet for Java. All of these things are modelled in this mod - realistic task forces, convoys, singletons and doublets plus INVASION FLEETS!!!
Oh yes... the ships are there...
Good hunting to you all.
Cheers
Stu.

....trying to figure out how to weigh in on the lack of targets.
I run 2 different sets of mods: 1 machine has TM-1.7.5 and RSRDC v221. The other pc has RFB for ROW and RSRDC v241. On the RFB/RSRDC set; I did 3 war patrols in Silversides in early to mid 1942. On my 2nd patrol, in the Luzon Straights area, I sank 1 or two ships, then was ordered to head to the west side of the Phillipines south of Manilla. I never made it there because I ran out of torpedos before getting there - ended up sinking 8 ships, my best patrol yet. My 3rd war patrol was to the Aleutians. I've done several patrols up there and have never sighted a ship. On return, I was awarded the USS Balao and am currently on patrol west of Guam. I sank two ships there shortly after arriving. One was a large transport. I was then ordered to the Bismarck Sea area and bobbed up and down dodging aircraft contacts. Then ordered back to the area west of Guam where I chased 2 fast moving warship contacts in fog and rain and never got a shot. Those are my recent experiences. It **seems**, at times, there are a lack of contacts out there. Since I'm a submariner and WW2 sub historian; I'm ok with that from a historical feel standpoint. I just want to make sure there's not a problem with the tracks generating correctly.

I have recently installed the new ADD-ON for ROW and NSM1.4.
On my New career out of Cavite to IndoChina patrol area, I've had three CTD's while cruising along in TC within the first 36 hours or so of entering patrol area. Nothing going on at the time, no enemy ships, nothing. (One career, first patrol, Saved at a point while patroilling the INDO area....went into TC, then CTD...restarted at an earlier SAVE point...used slightly different Nav/waypoint route...TC'ed...CTD within 20-30 seconds...
Any suggestions from anyone? If/when this happens again, on this or a different career, I'll re-post here.

Hello,
I use SH4 1.4 + TM 1.7.6+ RSRD v221. I've played SH4 for a month or so nad I'm still in 1942, sailing usually in an old good type "S" sub :)
Yes, sometimes the ocean seems to be completely empty, not a single contact during the long patrol days. But it's historically correct for me, there were lots of submarine patrols during WWII with no enemy contact at all.
The rare contats = more excitement when I hear anything in my hydrophone :arrgh!:
I have a different 'problem' (or it may be just RSRD feature). The mission orders are not generated randomly. For example, when I start my campaign in Manila (Dec 6, 1941) I'm always on my first patrol ordered to go first to San Bernardino Strait, next to the Samar area and then to the Luzon Straits... When I start a new career, orders are the same.
Not a big problem, but a little bit irritating, it reminds me scripted SH2 missions..
When I start my campaign in Brisbane (type "S") in early 1942, I'm always ordered to patrol Luzon Straits, which doesn't make much sense to me.
Firsty, it's a pretty far distance for my old sub.
Secondly - which is more important - it's not historically correct, as all the type "S" submarines from Brisbane had their patrol grids in the Solomons, much closer to Australia and where more important combat action was expected than on the way to Luzon...
I wonder whether it's a problem related to my SH4 installation/configuration (I was previously running other mods) or the patrol zones are "hard-coded" in RSRD and they are always the same for a specific submarine type and the patrol beginning date?
S!

I too have had this problem- in a Balao out of Pearl in '44, it's Luzon straits, recon Guam, recon Yap...BUT, aside from one or two contacts which always appear at the same area at the same time, I've NEVER encountered the same conditions twice...in fact, one career I encountered a TF with a Takao and a Yamato, but I only had one fish left- I gave it to the Takao as a going away present. I started a new career to try to get the pair, but they never showed. A further attempt gave me a large convoy, which was a blast, and a subsequent try netted a convoy with a Taiho in the middle.
I can't quibble with the missions I've encountered so far, as they are contemporaneous with the overall strategy in the central Pacific; it's not unlikely that a sub out of Pearl in spring of '44 would be sent to recon islands which were soon to be invaded. The ever-changing traffic makes it well worth the (seemingly) repetitious missions- my heartfelt appreciation for your efforts in making this mod!

I had exactly the same problem in exactly the same spot! I would CTD about 200nm out of Cavite in my Sargo apparently with nothing happening, so what I did was cruise out at a very low TC (256 or 512) what happened at that point of the previous CTD was an aircraft contact, so I slowed to TC 1 and sorted the contact (dove away), surfaced, saved and then kept going, no CTD. It appears to be a system issue with Time Compression and contact messages, why out of the Phillipines and seemingly nowhere else I don't know, but it seems to be solved by initially running out at a relatively low TC rate, leaving the 4096 to 6000+ TC for the wide open Pacific :hmm:
One other thing I did do was use Digital Truckers Radio Manager Mod (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=120510) to sort out the conflict errors in my radio stations I have installed, as there are known CTD issues with some radio mods that have major problems with events in the events.ini files where the corresponding mp3 files or .ogg files don't exist, so if you run radio station mods, get DT's great Radio Manager, follow his instructions on how to correct the conflicts and hey presto, I have not had one CTD since, and I run TM 1.7.6, ROW, RSRDC, NSM v4.0 and a stack of ship and radio mods together.

I think I see what the problem is here. If you are travelling even 2 knots at 6000 TC, you are travelling at 12,000 knots. Coming to a screeching stop from that rate is bound to cause a CTD:yep: My computer just restarted when I thought about TC that high:hmm:
Seriously, I'm sure some really strange things are possible at high time compression.

Both the radio and TC issues sound like likely culprits, as I seem to remember getting one of the 'special' messages around the same time I crashed in those instances. I'll try going at lower TC (was running around 2400, I think) and disabling the radio mods and see if that helps.

Lurker,
Thanks so much for all your work on this project. RSRD is, in my opinion, the single best effort to date to ensure the historical accuracy of this sim. Your work to this point has been exemplary. More of the same with phase III I should think.
If SUBSIM has a Medal of Honor, you have earned it!!! Well done and THANKS.

Thanks for the new mod Luker. I am currently running TM176. When you add RSRDC_P3_TM_v320 on top of the existing TM176 mod via JSGME, a warning window pops up from JSGME telling me RSRD Phase III is about to overwrite a number of files already altered by TM 1.7.6. Is this correct, and should I go ahead and allow JSGME to run RSRD Phase III overwriting the existing TM 1.7.6 files?
Thanks

IRT the above problem
1. It is caused due to a confict between two nodes in guns.dat and guns_radars_02.dat
2. This problem has been present in RSRDC since Phase I v 100
3. KGV is used only once in RSRDC, Dec 41 as part of Force X.
Currently have no plans to fix this problem.

Lurker, thank you for this great mod. :D I've been using it from phase one. I usually find something to sink, no matter the area I'am sent to. Started career '41, now at late '43.
Every now and then I receive a message to intercept IJN forces headed for home waters or somewhere else. I can never reach the location given in time.:damn: Is there a reason for this? Just curious. I sure would like to make one intercept.

These were "real world" ultra intel messages. Due to the nature of how SH4 does message traffic I'm force to broadcast to "all" forces. Please note at the end of eash message it says. "units in range attempt to intercept". If you can't intercept because of distance don't attempt it.

RSRDC V3XX Patch2
1. Corrected typo that caused a CTD when selecting Balao class SS from TF42/72 on 1945.
2. Corrected conflict between guns.dat and guns_radar_02.dat that prevented the “B” turret of KGV to display
3. Correct profile for Mastu DE
4. Integrated Ducimus’s Tench class SS into RSRDC
5. Adjusted the spawn probability for single merchants between 12/41 to 10/43
Installation
1. If RSRDC V3XX Patch 1 is installed, uninstall it is no longer required
2. Install "in port"

I just made a clean load of SH4 patched to 1.4 with multi sh. I thought I'd start a new career with TM and RSRD. Installed TM 1.7.6, all the ROW except the sub reflections, and then Phase III of RSRD plus the patch. Started the career in PH 12-8-41 off to Japan. Thought I'd stop by Midway to top off the tanks before the long journey, and half way to Midway we get the black screen. Tried this several times and get the same result. Unloaded RSRD and the problem went away. Am I missing something on loading RSRD? I'm using the TM versions.

What type of sub?. You say that you are running more than one version of SH4? What was the assign patrol area. I was in that general time frame and area today with out any problems. During testing I loaded only the "required" mods, i.e TM plus RSRDC and no other mods.

I uninstalled all mods except for TM and RSRD. Finally got away from Midway and on patrol. Encounted my first ship and automatic targeting took over. I set it for manual targeting before we started the career. I also set it for external camrea and event camera, neither worked. Saved the game and exited to main screen and sure enough they were not checked. How do I keep them checked? I think that maybe it was something in the sound Mod in ROW that was causing the problem. I might try it again without the sound part of ROW because I really miss that mod. I think we are getting there, and thanks for haning in there with me. These are such great mods for this game.

Thanks guys I'll try both this evening. I thought that by selecting normal it may have caused the automatic targeting to take over. I'm going to re-install the ROW stuff tonight along with the sound fix. One quick question - can I install ROW after TM & RSRD or do I need to un-install both and put ROW in first then TM and finally RSRD followed by the patch and the sound fix?

1. 1_Tmaru
2. 3_TMaru GXF_ROW Version
3. ROW Sounds
4. Addon for ROW OR
Pacific Environment for ROW by kriller2 (highly recommended)
5. RSRDC III for TMaru

I've got a question concerning the cargo of the merchant ships: Do they carry more ammo or fuel then in the stock game?
I'm asking because I had NSM 4.0 installed and although I was using the contact pistol (June 1943 onwads) all ships were breaking in 2 as soon as the first torpedo hit them.
Now I want to know if NSM isn't working right or if the ships are so packed with ammo that they desintegrate upon impact.

Some have fuel, some have ammo, some have freight. It has been assigned "randomly" by the tools I use to generate merchant ships
Stock is 100% freight only. No ammo in merchants and no fuel in tankers

I've noticed the same thing as far as the shipping goes. I haven't found any unloaded freighters or tankers, going in either direction since I enabled RSRDC. WHAT A RUSH!!!! Getting a torpedo shot set up into a good firing position takes a lot of thought and patience, not to mention maneuvering. So the ship exploding all over the place is my reward. Great effects!
Seriously, though, were all tankers during the war filled with av-gas? The Japs were getting their oil from Malaya, but were the refineries there too, or were they shipping crude to the home islands, then trans-shipping the finished product to their bases? Apparently, the program is unable to distinguish between heavy crude, Bunker-C, or Av-Gas.
Just an obversation. Thanks for the effects!

It looks like there are some problems with RSRDC / NSM together. Since NSM has changed the damage model, and RSRD has changed the loads of ships, the combined effect can be a bit...over-spectacular.

I've read about 'Battle of Midway' actions (including carrier launched acft) being scripted in RSRDC. Yesterday, however, returning from patrolling off Japan in late May '42, I saw that the date was such that I could get to the area West of Midway prior to the historic date of the battle (4 June '42 Climax). I looked up a battle map with the actual coordinates of the IJN carriers when attacked, and sailed to that location. I then loitered there in the vicinity of 30N and 179W for two days starting 3 June, and never saw a single ship of any type.
Are the IJN fleets somehow represented in SH4/RSRDC?

Cool! They are there!...I continue to be very impressed with RSRDC's detail. 'll have to modify my Search pattern.
Watching some excellent documentaries about the Battle of Midway this morning I learned that 19 (Nineteen!) US subs were in the region, and apparently only one got into action in any way...with the following result [caveat: according to Wikipedia]:
Subsequent to the air attacks, Nautilus fired torpedoes at what her crew thought was Sōryū but which later research suggests was Kaga. Nautilus claimed one hit the carrier, causing "flames". However, the surviving crew of Kaga reported no torpedo hits after the air attack. Of the four torpedoes launched, one failed to run, two ran erratically, and the fourth was a 'dud', impacting amidships and breaking in half

Good evening fellow skippers.
I've been enjoying this mod for quite some time now and have all the latest updates. I recently started a campaign in the Aleutian Islands and I'm not seeing any contacts around the islands of Attu and Kiska. I have had a couple of tries at this campaign before and no contacts then.
I have no trouble finding contacts around Paramushir and the islands north of Japan. However after about 8 or 9 patrols in this and previous campaigns I have found nothing at Attu or Kiska or anywhere around the actual Aleutian Islands. Is there traffic there? I can't locate the SH Mission Editor to check myself (if indeed that is the correct programme to do so).
Anyone else been able to find anything in this part of the world?

I'm currently in a career with the Nautilus. A few patrols back, I was sent to Midway for defense of the island. I didn't see any ships, but I did encounter what appeared to be about 40-50 planes flying in formation due north. The result? 84% damage to my boat...
I just love this game!

Left Midway 12/31/42 to patrol area in Marshall Islands area.
Re-assigned to Gilbert Islands after fulfilling Marshall Islands patrol.
Re-assigned to Gilbert Islands (again with same specs)
Finished patrol and sent usual 1/17/43 0001Z status message.
Message recieved 1/17/43 0002Z (popup): "Message Briefing"
Checked radio log: "Message briefing" is all it said.
1/17/43 0007Z Message recieved: "RTB AT YOUR DISCRETION"
Well, there is no discretion doing an RTB with 13 of my torpedoes still onboard (nor any valor), so I continued patrolling northward along the Gilbert chain of islands. A day later I received a message to patrol a point midway between the Gilberts and Marshalls. That's more like it.
I was curious about the "Message briefing" message, however. Seems like a slight boo-boo somewhere.

I was curious about the "Message briefing" message, however. Seems like a slight boo-boo somewhere.
Yeah...I've seen that one twice...once during my first patrol (no patches had been released yet, or maybe only Patch I) when I was still fully loaded. The second one was more rational; I had ran out of torpedoes.
Just guesswork here: if the mission generator doesn't find any eligible "targets" near your sub, you get ordered home. Once you're in a zone where eligible missions are available, you'll get one if you radio in (and provided you have fuel and torpedoes).

OK, got it. I'll install next time I get to port. This must have been one of those "Ugly Bugs" you mentioned earlier.
A good time for the above RTB message would be when the boat runs out of torpedoes. First time I've gotten this one, but I still had 13 torpedoes onboard. Does RSRD take remaining torpedoes into account when sending messages?

These are the values it's suppose to work off of:
EvaluationReason=StatusReport
AllMatch=PrimaryObjCompleted
PartialMatch=
PartialMatchingMinimumPercentage=
MinimumFuelPercentage=25
MinimumAmmoPercentage=10
Not that it's suppose to be at 10% ammo or 25 percent fuel to trigger

Scuse me, long-gone-returning-member question here: I do have to apply patch 3 after the main one, yes? (Using the TM friendly version here... and since I put RSRD after about an hour's play my colours get all funky and the puter locks up).

Yes you must add patch3 after the main one.

Disregard my previous comment about crash: Had changed my resolution to 1024/768:75hz with FSAA... I *think* my 8600 didn't like that and was heating up... I'm back at 1280/1024:60hz without AA.... runs fine now.

Sounds to me as though your GFX card is on its way out as I doubt that RSRD has anything to do with it.
Am I doing something wrong here?
Using TM and the TM version of the campaign, Im lucky to find one enemy merchant ship in one patrol in the asiatic fleet area, if any..... Getting radio reports all the time.....Heavy IJN here, Invasion there...but for some reason I'm dead alone out there only encountering convoys of neutral fishing boats.

After several days of fruitless hunting in the Gilbert-Marshalls area, I decided to head for the barn with 13 fish remaining and only 14K chalked up for tonnage. All the way back to Midway, I would get the 'Message briefing' message followed up by the 'RTB AT YOUR DESCRETION' message a few minutes later, EVERYTIME I sent in a status report. Most annoying, but I finally made it to Midway, docked, awarded promotions and medals, adjusted the crew, and installed Surface Search RADAR. I then started my next patrol (to the Volcano Islands), then left the game, installed Patch 3, and re-started the game at the OnLeavingPort.Save.
I sure hope that smashed that Ugly Bug!
I just have been waiting for someone to say that.
Realism is one thing, waiting for 8 weeks ingame in straits like between borneo and celebes without seeing a single ship is another thing. ;)

Maybe just unlucky? With careers out of Brisbane or Fremantle, I always run into at least 2 or 3 targets in choke points before I even get close to my patrol area with RSRD.

I know. My problem is I feel just the opposite. I spent years of complaining about AOD and SHCE's abundance of targets; far more than any real captain ever dreamed of. I've actually come to enjoy the frustration and the boredom of dead patrols. Not that I'd do them in real time, but still...:sunny:

Randomly selected "Career" records of very successful submarines:
Nautilus 11 patrols 22 ships sunk 70,000 tons
Tang 5 patrols 24 ships sunk 93,000 tons
Wahoo 7 patrols 20 ships sunk 60,000 tons
.....so....Even these Subs averaged less than 14,000 per patrol.
However, across the fleet of subs, only a miniscule number could claim even a single patrol of sunk tonnage of 14,000. At this site http://www.pigboats.com/ww2/ww2sinkings.html you'll find ALL the career totals....Career totals over several/many patrols each. For example:
USS Paddle 18,798 tons 5 Ships
USS Pampanito 27,332 tons 5 Ships
USS Parche 31,696 tons 8 Ships
USS Pargo 27,983 tons 9 Ships
USS Permit 5,741 tons 3 Ships
USS Peto 29,139 tons 7 Ships
USS Pickerel 6,472 tons 4 Ships
USS Picuda 49,539 tons 12 Ships
USS Pike 2,022 tons 1 Ship
USS Pintado 42,956 tons 8 Ships
USS Pipefish 1,818 tons 2 Ships
USS Piranha 12,277 tons 2 Ships
USS Plaice 2,943 tons 4 Ships
USS Plunger 48,328 tons 12 Ships
USS Pogy 62,633 tons 16 Ships
USS Pollack 30,278 tons 11 Ships
USS Pomfret 20,936 tons 4 Ships
USS Pompano SS 181 21,443 tons 5 Ships
USS Pompon SS 267 8,772 tons 3 Ships
USS Porpoise SS 172 9,741 tons 3 Ships
USS Puffer SS 268 36,392 tons 8 Ships
While frustrating to sail a 'scoreless' SH4 patrol, it still gives some satisfaction and immersion into the Submarine war....and, when you do finally have a patrol which by luck or skill results in intense combat action, it is exciting to the nth degeree...enthralling...invigorating...thrilling.. .and ultimately Extremely rewarding.
Similarly, in Flight-Simming there are many folks who only want to go out and become an Instant Ace in a single 20-minute dog-fighting sortie, destroying 5 or 6 or 8 or 9 enemy aircraft. BUT, many others are satisfied with just "surviving" an assigned sortie/mission, and going on to survive many sorties/missions of various types, where getting a "kill" is a rarity and a "treat". To those Simmers, becoming an "Ace" during a flight sim Career is an achievement and very satisfying....especially when playing such a career in the "Dead-is-Dead" mode (NO Replays Allowed...you get shot down/killed, and your Career is OVER).

Exactly! Do you notice how aggressive you become when you do spot that ship after days of patrolling? Now you know why the real guys were so aggressive!!!! After days of fruitless searching....anything spotted within range is going down.

Guess I shouldn't complain. I've had more than one patrol where I never made a contact, let alone a kill. One other patrol I had all 6 torpedoes in the forward tubes duds - either ran too deep, or just that sickining 'thunk'. Maybe I'm just cheap, but I feel like I'm wasting the taxpayers money if I don't run up at least a 30K score. Returning to base with 13 torpedoes kinda looks like I chickened out on the patrol. Much better to sail in with a broom tied to the periscope.
The next patrol is shaping up much better. Three Old Large Passenger Liners (9K ea) plus their escorting ammo ships. That's alotta troops and ammo that our guys won't have to contend with. One convoy had two of the Passenger Liners and two ammo ships. One of the freighters turned my whole screen yellow-orange for awhile. Looked like the Grand Finale' at a 4th of July celebration. WHAT A RUSH!!! :arrgh!:

There were many instances in RL where the boat claimed a kill, but did not recieve credit for it. The book 'Silent Running' brought this out. Seems like the USS Jack only recieved 2/3rds of the credit due, and yes, the Jack had several patrols with no sightings or sinkings. Actually, the Jack was a poorly scoring boat, but the story made for good reading. The author is James F. Calvert, USN (Ret).

Now what is going on??? I'm in September of 1944 out of Pearl patroling around the Japanese home islands. RSRD is supposed to reduce traffic to historical levels. What I'm running into is multiple convoys everywhere. At one point I tracked three convoys of two or three merchies and four or five escorts simultaneously on radar. Every convoy of the past 10 or more that I've encountered has a similar makeup: two or three merchies accompanied by three to five escorts.
I just returned from the worst tonnage I've done and still had over 24,000 tons in spite of all the escorts I have to fight through to get to the merchies. Frankly it's fun and dangerous (had both periscopes destroyed and had to return home with two torpedoes left) but hardly as advertised for RSRD. Everyone else says they can't find targets.
I'm running in this order: Trigger Maru 1.7, TM patch 1.71, RSRDC_P1_TM_v114, NSM 3.3 hardcore torpedoes classic. Very strange.
I'm assuming all this is a dead issue. I'm in port downloading all the updates that come out while I'm at sea. They almost got me this time--blinded me. Hope I can survive the war!

First of all you are running a "VERY OLD" version of RSRDC. It only covered operations through mid 1943. Any thing after that day is nothing more than modified “stock”. I recommend that you upgrade you software to the latest build. The problems you complaining about have long been fixed in newer versions of the software.

Do not use RSRDC with Trigger Maru Overhaul (BETA), my code review noted that v320 plus Patch3 will "NOT" run correctly. Will create a new version of RSRDC after TMO is out of Beta testing.

I was reading an account of the HMS Terrapin traveling through the Lombok Straight and it mentioned that the Japanese had a base in Lembar on Lombok that they routinely sent patrols from to patrol the straight, since they were fully aware of its routine passage by allied subs. Any chance of adding this to a future update/phase?

Here is your answer. Best thing to do is either run TM 1.7.6 with RSRDC and wait for a fix or just run TMO by itself. Either way you can't go wrong!
Happy Hunting!
