At 0400 hours U-24 under the command of Willie Ranacher was leaving the dock for patrol 14 in the Black Sea. At 0402 RA shouted "Radar signals detected, lots of them". Willies first thought was "Russians" and then he ordered "flank speed ahead, lets get out of the port pronto". U-24 was passing the piers when every search light in the port lit up the sky. Then silhouettes of Russian planes filled the sky and every Flak gun in the port and on every ship opened fire:rock:
The watch crew on U-24 looked at the "show" and wondered, will the base still be there when the patrol is over?

Position AF58. Made contact with enemy task force at 2. May 20:11. 4 Troop transports and three Tribal class destroyers sighted, stationary. All targets sunk. Hevay fog and wind so moved southwards deeper into the fjord to replenish the batteries and oxygen suplies and to recover external reloads before going back to the area to check for more targets, no sound contacts. Spoted Fiji class cruiser 3. May 3:14 2000 meters off my port side, dived to attack. Hit forward cordite magazine and she sank. No other targets found nearby. On return trip was picked up by a DD, dived to 190, depth charged, took heavy damage, bow torpedo tubes inoperable, both periscopes destroyed and heavy flooding but survived the attack. Return to base went otherways uneventfully, if not for an unlucky norwegian trawler which was sunk using the deck gun to give my crew practice. Was awarded a Knights Cross with oak leaves and took command of a new type VIIC boat. Preparing to take her on a shakedown cruise today on the 8. June 1940. Happy hunting.

Accompanied this convoy from 20 November to 03 December 1941. The escorts became nasty, but their ambush failed. 2 corvettes and a Black Swan sunk. Was unable to gun down remaining ships in convoy due to weather.

At 1800 U-24 returns to port after her 14´th patrol. 3 ships sunk for 7800 tons.
Attacked by Russian planes, Uragan class escorts and even an torpedo boat with depth charges. South of Kertch U-24 joined the Romanian Air force in an attack on an small convoy and sank an Coastal tanker with her last torpedo, got the credit even though the pilots did there best to sink it first:rock:
Willie and his crew will now have to face daily Russian bombing until they can leave port for the 15´th patrol, the war is not going well:nope:

Both are wonderful, but GWX takes SH3 to a sublime level of perfection. If you are good with GWX, hunting with an American U-Boat is child's play. I split my time between the 2 simulations and do not think one is better than the other. Both are necessary possessions. They compliment one another like bacon and eggs, ham and swiss. (Pssst!! There are real thermal layers in Wolves of the Pacific and the American TBT is uber wunderbar!)

Yesterday I sunk my first BB, Revenge Class!
HOOOOORAAAAY!

Since release of SH3, I have not encountered any BBs before.
I don't actively search for BBs (e.g. at harbours or any 'historical' place where they are scripted) so this encounter was by pure chance. Lucky me!:D

Met her somewhat west of the Rockall Bank.
Good weather, calm seas, time approx. 11 a.m..
Very dangerous conditions as you can see but good for calculations.
Only lightly guarded (four escorts apparently). I sent two magnetic T2 (the others were T1 :damn: ) for her at 2000m and waited for the impact.

BOOOM! .... BOOOOOOM!!!

There she goes!:|\\
I dived down to 150m and waited for the payback time.
Nothing.
The escorts didn't seem to care that their 'mother' was dead. So I silently crept away ... Lucky me again!:D

Returned to Brest with 53,383 tons sunk. On return vojage was surprised by a Black Swan and two other DD's, got pounded allmost to hell by wasserbombe. Lost my flak gunner, medic and a torpedo man in the attack, four sailors injured. Fore torpedo tubes destroyed, leaked out most of my diesel and limping back on one engine. Electrical engines destroyed. Looking forward to the boozer after sending out leters to the families of the crewmen, looks like i can go for quite a bender before my boat is back in action.

Leave a few ships for me, prefably large ones without a cargo of cork and blowup dolls:D .

May 1940. went to stavanger just before midnight, just intime for Norway to become less nutrel. Anyway there was a med cargo, ore carryier, small merchant and a Large Tanker. put three fish into the large tanker and two into the ore carrier. The large tanker took some time to sink, I though that it might not sink at all. I was only in my IID, so only had my 5 fish. with a VII I could have got the rest. There was no defences, nothing;) .

After the almost uneventful last patrol, we made our way out of Kiel. To our suprise we saw the Graf Zeppalin steaming out. which was good news for us as I said to Bernard that the crew will meet for a party on there. Unfortunatley the Graf Zeppalin went the wrong way and beached itself......Bernard was never a good pilot.

Just off Norway a large merchant turned up, we sent a T1 into it, but wanting to see if it will go down I waited at periscope depth, then two JU87's turn up and finished it off:damn: . (No I did not get the tonnage) You wait ages for the luftwaffe to turn up and just when you don't want them....oh well.

A day later another later a another large merchant turns up and after missing with 2 fish, gave up. then for my last 2 fish a cago/merchant arrived missed with one fish and blew off the prop with the other...Its crew are probberly rowing it back to port as I am holding up the bar in Kiel

U-501 made it home to lorient after only 13 days at sea:damn:
i decided to attack a group of DD's
2 black swans
and something that looked like a hunt class
torpedoed both black swans and avoided the hunt for 3 hours
then disaster
2 well placed DC's exploded on each side of my boat (:damn: )
heavy flodding and only able to keep the boat up by running at flank speed
after 9 minutes of running at flank speed and having avoided several DC attacks the flodding was stopped and all of the water was out of the boat then we dove to get away
few hours later we surfaced and went flank speed to reach lorient somewhere on march the 14th

Captain's Log
June 7, 1944 (Grid Sector BC-A1)
2100 Hours

Caught 3 American ships heading due East (probably for England) on my sonar. Formation composed of 1 Troop Transport, 1 Tank Transport, and 1 Fuel Tanker, V formation, Tanker leading. Dove to 22 meters in VIIC/41 and set engines to STANDARD. Followed them for 3 hours, until exactly midnight. Launched 1 torpedo. Sank the Tanker first. Burned up and split in half before sinking. No survivors, as she went down in seconds after the fire consumed her. Sank the Tank Transport next after using 2 torpedoes. Sank by the bow and went down in approx. 4 minutes. No survivors accounted for or seen. Destroyed the Troop Transport last with 1 torpedo. Must of hit a coal bunker, as the bastard split in half and fire ripped through the bow. Sank in 2 minutes. Surfaced and watched it sink before moving on to Sector BC-A7 to engage reported convoy.

-Captain Manfred Rhinehardt Lemp

June 8, 1944 (Grid Sector BC-C9)
1300 Hours

I do not know how long how much longer we can hold out. We have taken severe damage in the bow. The convoy wasn't a convoy at all. It was a trap of 3 cruisers and 4 destroyers. I've suffered some pretty bad damage, including a gaping hole in the Conning Tower that was inflicted upon us during our crash dive from periscope depth to avoid the cruisers. I'd estimate about 4 charges hit us with bad damage. The shafts are in working condition, at least, and the batteries can hold out for a few more hours. Oxygen getting low fast, fuel depleted after a severe leak. I don't think I'll be coming back from this patrol, but I hope this log will be found so my story and the story of my crew can be told. Our condition is desperate. If this is goodbye, so be it.

-Captain Lemp

June 8, 1944 (Grid Sector BC-C9)
1330 Hours

Only 30 minutes ago did I write to you, but it is now I have a matter of urgency. The shafts have died now. Bastard Tommies are crapping all over us with those charges. We are trying to solve the flooding problem, but the water is just too great. We estimate we can hold out for an hour before the water overtakes the engine room. I'll of ordered all the crew to move to the bow by that time. I've got the gramophone running, in an attempt to give the men hope. The sea is over a thousand fathoms deep here. If we don't get the flooding solved quickly we'll sink too deep and die. Nothing more to do. According to the meter, we are at 214 meters deep and sinking at 3 meters per half hour. Nothing more to write. I'll add more later.

-Captain Lemp

I lost to the flooding. To be honest, implosion isn't fun... So much for 603,574 tonnes in my career.   :damn: :damn: :nope: :nope:

recently someone at the 4th kriegsmarine division (see the link on my sig) loughed about the tonnage i sank. it was like "did the brits had more than 2.000.000 tons of ships? or 2 Hood's ? and what about the houndreds of DD's you sank?"

Realised that if 1940 Dover straights are a bit hmmm (spesh in bad weather) then I dont wanan try 1945.

I was writing the next line of the song "Meet me in Balzimore, You Hoochie Woochie," when at 1750 we had sound contact with a merchie. Half hour later, the bastard had changed course and put us in lousy position for a sure shot. Bleah!

So we surfaced and gave him a royal 24 gun salute in honour of George V. 11,000 tons within 8 hours of patrol. Balz does it again. :smug:

4te Jänner, 1940

Got back luckily from the 2nd patrol and scored 70,000 BRT by shadowing a convoy for a few days southwest of Britain.

Now on the 3rd patrol and got the luck to be assigned in the middle of the Kanal (I know I've been playing with the patrol grids this time, but eek I didn't know that grid is there), we spotted numerous tankers and a british warship in Calais and now we are commencing a port raiding.
The plan is that we'll try to raid atleast another port with juicy targets and get to our patrol grid at Normandie and try to slip through either the eastern or western side of the Kanal (depends on how many torpedoes remained).
I hope God will be with us.

U-52 was on her way home, when I got the report of a Large convoy. Spot her, and ahead full to set up an ambush. Set it all up. Periscope up....Black Swan. Two torps missed....Rear torp missed after she passed overhead. So fire my torps. (red triangles cos id fiddles with depths and speeds after swithcing tomanual for a second on the weps officer board) and then got depth charged. We sank to about 174 metres. The immersion of GWX SH3 is awesome. My hull began to crumple. Could hear it, was scary. I love this game. Trying to get out now. Been damaged, badly damaged. But flooding is all sorted. Just got to pray lol. Was such a massive convoy though. 4 files of 5 or 6 ships each. Such a waste.
