U-123, 13 Aug. 1941. 2 miles SW of Madeira. Brisk wind, sunny sky.
Even though many of our comrades have gone west, we're off on another patrol to cause havock with the enemy. Who else is holding up the honor of the U-Boot Service?

Staying with U-511 in the Atlantic to create havoc for the queen.
Besides, from what BdU tells us, the Americans in the Pacific are their own worse enemies with unfinished submarines. No worries!

By the way...just finished a patrol out of Brest to BE39 in a IXB. Wanted to see how well I could do without using any torps - strictly deck guns and flak guns.
With realism at 75% in 1941, we sank 58,740 tons of shipping, from C2s, C3s, coastal merchants, to T2 and T3 tankers. Also bagged 12 hurricanes. But, it's not something I want to do on a regular basis. Someone could get hurt out there - ME!!!

Oct 27 1941 running on surface to intercept large convoy in grid square BE-86.
On oct 25th U-65 spotted a task force built around an Illustrious class carrier. 2 eels and a steamer sent the carrier to a watery grave. Another steamer took down a Dido light crusier. :D

Will be patroling the atlantic for another week, and then I'll be spliting my time between the two. SH4 is due to arrive today, I hcave 2 gig of RAM being sent to me as I speak. Once the RAM is installed it's time to clock on playing both sides.
To stop them fighting, the Americans will stay in the pacific, while the atlantic and Indian oceans will be the playground of my U-boats.

U-55 type VIIb July 15th 1940, a little north of AM 52. Left Kiel on June 30, patrolled AN 41, went around through the Orkneys/Shetland straight. Did'nt find anything else than bloody Hurricanes and DD patrols. It's daylight almost 24 hours a day... Just tried to intercept a big convoy heading towards Liverpool, but daylight and nice weather when I don't need it (interception at night would have been in shallow waters). Just spent more than 2 hours escaping a couple of Black Swans and a Flower who are now heading back to the convoy. Waiting for better days but enjoying every hour at sea...
U-97, still alive in the Med.
SH4 is a slideshow anyway, and my fear came true...
SH4's interface ****s! The buttons OMG, this is 2007. Not 1992.
The return-button returning to fire a torpedo didn't bolster my confidence either, if that's in, who knows what else is wrong.
Water looks nice though.

U-47 reporting!Heading for AM23 on first patrol after an <cough> accident with my watch crew that sent us to the bottom. :arrgh!:
No SH4 for me i think.I have AMD 3800+ x2,Asus Nvidia 6600 512MB,2GB RAM.My video card plays SH3 GWX with dignity, but i had to bring particles down to 30,otherwise explosions seen from the periscope were lowering fps too much.Since i hardly play any games now,i don't see why i should change video card just for SH4,which could be very well an add-on to SH3.I mostly use the PC to surf, watch video and encode and my VGA does fine all this.
Besides,we wouldn't want to turncoat in the middle of the war now, would we? :arrgh!:

So far I have encountered a convoy north of the islands. Mid morning. Calm weather. Huge, heavily escorted. Only managed to take down a large cargo and medium merchant before being driven deep. Thankfully the escorts had set the depth of their charges at about 100 meters. I was at 140. Was able to quitely slip away without damage. Hope to see good fishing around Freetown.

Fuller marks to the two replacement AA crew who stood in the carnage of our deck to see the Sunderland off. Still seaworthy. Currently at 180m shaking off three angry escorts with no sense of humour. :smug:

Thanks Brag, the crew appreciates the support! We made it away. Fell in with a second convoy 1day sailing south. Heavy weather. Nightfalling. Penetrated the convoy. 23,000 tons sunk and slipped away unseen. Heading south looking for calmer waters to reload from externals. :D

Got to back home / Attack and observation Periscope destroyed / Radio Antenna destroyed / Conning tower with heavy dammage / No casualties in crew
Met a large convoy 10 hours ago ; Decided to Chloroform my WO for this patrol :arrgh!:; Sunk 3 Large cargos, but in panic, not seen this Flower Class rushing me ; Depth charged ... Conning tower out and a lot of noise from her ... Could escape running deep.
I awake my WO with some good Schnapps i keep with me for some great events, he awake quick and say to me : "Sir, we should back to base, i made a strange dream: A lot of our people spoke about to fight in another seas .. i'm worried "
"Fool !!!" i said ... Hmmm, we have heavy dammage, ok, let's go back to base.
During travel back to Brest, i heard at many times my crew who was speaking of something "pacific ?" don't heard exactly .. They must have smoke grass or something ? why they should want to be pacific ? we must be agressive, not cool !! What's going on there ..
When arrived at Brest, a guy named Thomsen, drunk as usual, said that the americans was attacked at Pearl Harbour, and a lot of guys betrayed us to fight with them ..
Anyway i will be there, at Brest for my next patrol, even if i'm the only guy on this sub!!. Maybe i will go to pacific with wife and children, but not before next hollidays, i still have some merchants to sunk here ...

U-555 IXD2, still in the Golf von Vizcaya north of Spain. I have successfully evaded a bomber.(my first airplane ever encountered in GWX ever).
Will post in my thread New York, New York part 2 when I start sinking ships again.:)
Sitting at the bottom of the sea just north of Scapa Flow. Destroyer above me dropping depth charges. He can't find me but he is getting close. Second patrol with GWX. Guess they didn't appreciate my sinking of their freighter that had all the ammo that lit up the sky so nicely. Hope to be able to get underway soon, if we are still alive.

U-46, yes another one:yep: , type VIIb, first war patrol. Sep 23 -39, BF17. After three weeks, going the long way, in calm weather it´s now back to the normal miserable weather. Just sank two merchants in an convoy, lucky, almost blind shots in the fog. Starting the return trip, got attacked 3 times by Ansons and 1 time by a destroyer on the out leg so I´m a little bit worried.

I'm a relative "noob" to SHIII still (and this forum, 1st post here, heh). I clung to SHII and Destroyer Commander up until about 5 months ago when my buddies were talking on TS about playing SHIII and told me about something they called "Gray Wolves" and such.
I don't think any other $19.95 game(price on Direct2Drive at the time) has ever been worth as much to me and more. Altho it wasn't the stock game (I tried that once, never again). It's the modding community that made this game really really worth it to me. Between GWX and SH3 Commander I'm quite happy (today I try out a new toy, SH3 Gen Tracking Room).
I stopped playing for a couple months but I've gotten back into it heavy now. Just went through the Naval Academy (again, I got a new PC in the couples month and forgot to copy my SHIII info over, doh!) and have run a couple of "training" campaigns in the Black Sea and Atlantic to get back into the swing of it.
Think today once I get SH3Gen with the new "Tracking Room" working I'll finally toss my hat in to start my career in a Type VIIB (again, 11 patrol career was on my old PC, argh I regret completely wiping that thing now, was approaching early '41 ).
One of those buddies who talked me into trying SHIII defected to the Allies in the Pacific (SHIV). Based off what he's told me, I'll be perfectly happy remaining here in the Atlantic amongst my "pack".
Welcome aboard this nest of ruffians, Kaleun Genferret! Good hunting :D

Green kaleun and his crew just made it back from their first war patrol in October 1939. S. Paul Ochs commanding U-23. Long voyage off of Norway in a tiny Type II sub and the lads were glad to get back onto solid land. Rough seas, terrible visibility and little hunting. We chased a few ships but managed to lose them, or they turned out to be neutrals, and burned too much fuel in the process. Our navigator needs help sorting out proper intercept techniques.
Just after deciding to head back, patrol completed but still with all our fish, we stumbled across a merchant running without lights in the middle of a moonless, overcast, night at point blank range. It was quite a chase wracked by pounding rain and giant waves. Our vessel is less than swift even under the best circumstances and lacked a deck gun to make short work of the target.
She turned out to be British, but we had to get inside of 800 meters to see the flag clearly. One torpedo missed, a second hit but with no visible damage, and the third ran off course. After a long period of reloading, something else we need to improve our skills with, the next torpedo hit under her bow and the cargo on the deck exploded. We trailed patiently behind as the water flooded her face first and she began to sink. There was much cheering and it was rewarded with a spectacular secondary explosion.
Limped home, nearly out of fuel, and travelled mainly by battery using our deisel to keep it charged. Green kapitan Paul may be but he'd be damned if he'd run out of gas on his first patrol! We stopped by a small base off the coast for refuelling, and it was a close thing, before moving on to the Kiel Canal. Then it was all relaxing on deck, soaking in the view, and listening to contraband jazz records on the gramaphone until we made it home.
We may not be aces but we survived!

Kapitan Paul Ochs of U-23, Lottern, reporting back. Second patrol much smoother and even took out a 10k Polish freighter south of Kristiansand. The crew's confidence is growing. They've taken to referring to themselves as the Swingjugend, or Swing Kids, because of a shared love of foreign jazz and big bands. But the few records we have are increasingly hard to hide from inspectors. One like-minded Schnellboot crew has taken to carrying our collection out to us as we leave Kiel and picking it up as we return.
We picked up a large ship moving in a zig-zag pattern on our sonar during a dive. Having learned, by necessity, the effectiveness of extending range by alternating between battery and deisel in this tiny Einbaum "canoe" this has become our standard mode of travel. The dives, at slow speeds, also help us pick up targets at better than visual range. We've also become much more choosy about what targets to go after. They must be close or closing. We do not waste fuel. Our chief engineer, Albert Teschner, has taped over the Flank setting. As far as we are concerned it does not exist.
This vessel was heading right for us without escort, and we picked up the Polish flag over the tallest mast. Opperman, our navigator, insisted on sorting out the zig-zag pattern mathematically, through painstaking observation and maintaining station keeping until we had it mapped and dissected. This is, of course, the same Opperman who saw our fuel tanks to near empty on the first patrol. I took a quick vote of the officers and we decided just to head into the middle of the pattern and wait. Whereever the freighter ended up we'd be somewhere nearby. The gramophone was, regretfully, turned off.
The Polish ended up behind us at closest approach so we surfaced and turned to 180 degrees as fast as we could. Three torpedos fired in a spread slightly forward. Again only one hit. This time, however, we left the magnetic detonator on and carefully set the depth to run under her keel. At first there was no obvious effect other than that, somehow, we were easily outrunning her. "Load faster, load faster....wait. Where are all the Poles going?!" Sure enough they were fleeing the seemingly intact ship.
And then she started, minutely at first, settling lower on the ocean - but on an even keel. A meter of water rising took several minutes. And then her bow dipped, reluctantly, regretfully as if acknowledging defeat and she slipped under the waves.
Cheers all about, the gramophone played some merry gypsy jazz, and we broke open some smuggled Berliner Weisse as we pulled away from the scene of our victory. But I stared for a time from the conning tower at the wreckage. It was a beautiful sunny day and there had been a huge ship with all hands enjoying the weather just as we had. Now, no fires no explosions and only a few men in rafts floating away from the crates and detrius that marked the spot where she vanished. Is that how we will end up one day? Only we will not be in rafts...it all seems too easy.
The lads tugged me out of my brooding and suggested we must find an artist to paint a slide-trombone as our emblem for the conning tower. Another wondered if there might not be some more music on British ships. Perhaps if we find smaller ones we could board them and search...I told them I'd ask for a grid closer to England next patrol.
We may be a bit irregular but we are growing more effective and clearly motivated. If not by the nonsense Berlin tosses our way. We're family now. We'll see this war out one way or another and if it comes down to us or the other fellows, I'm afraid they're up against the Swing Kids of U-23 now.
Swing heil!

First patrol is almost over and have not sighted a contact, extremely disappointed and will continue the hunt until I am almost out of the required fuel to get back to Lorient. Returning to base with all fish (bar the one Bernard fired before even getting to open sea), is almost as bad as sinking an axis ship!

U-102 reporting very happily from the end of her 9th Patrol, having sunk 48K tonnes. Managed to sink all the escorts protecting a convoy then just blatted away with the deck gun at my defenseless prey. This was followed by a profitable harbour raid and then another tussle with a convoy containing large and tasty cargo vessels.
Have been studying the reduced-immersion complaints of SH4, among other reviews, and doubt I'll go anywhere near that inside of a year. If at all. Still happily addicted to this wonderful sim, and the expanding improvements of GWX.
Quick question while I'm here... why on earth would anyone trade in a Type VIIB for a Type VIIC? What are the benefits or improvements? The Type VIIC is slower and can't even dive deeper. Hmmn.
Best regards to you all.

Found a nice C2 that I repeatedly attacked for over 2 hours while in some major fog and heavy seas. I forgot how far into the war I was with this campaign (1943ish i think) and the c2 took more than a few pot shots at me. In the end (and in a bout of sheer insanity) I began ramming the c2. It won...just. DiD rules mean new campaign which I was after anyway, but wanted this one to go out in some rediculous fashion.

First I'm a VIIB fan, but one reason VIIC is popular because of the conning tower option, & flak. Another and more recent is the VIIC/41 mod out.

Even with historical availability dates turned on in SHIII Commander I could have gotten one in Oct of '39 if I wanted to. Nice 9000 cost on it, but it was there all the same.
I stuck with my VIIB, however. Once '40 rolled around the price dropped to 7500. Still rolling in my VIIB tho. ;)
Stock SHIII they're available immediately if you choose Wilhelmshaven as your starting port, Oct '39 w/ SHIII Commander historical availability turned on.
Personally I'm gonna roll in my VIIB until the VIIC comes along. Then I'll consider making a switch. Probably won't even think about the IX until the U.S. enters the war and I start making the trips across the Atlantic, or the long distance IX/D2 if I decide to go to the far east.
Well I know for a fact that Kretschmer rolled in a VIIb until he was sunk. The advantage in getting a C really comes when you upgrade from a II or when you're just starting. Its a waste of renown for me if I'm in a VIIB. If you survive til you can get a VIIC/41 however its very much worth getting. All that a VIIC has is more torpedoes basically. The VIIC/41 however can dive dive dive. its operating depth is below the crush depth of a VIIC or right around it.
Its all about relative advantage for me.

Hence why I was going to wait before I decided. Knowing this I'll just wait for the VIIC/41 and won't go to any of the IX variants unless I transfer to a flotilla with long distance patrols (Carribean/Far East/etc).

Six torpedoes remaining.
P.S. This is a little embarassing, but if someone from Portugal embassy contacts... sighted a lone merchant few days ago, night-time so approached on surface and fired one torpedo, it was only after that when someone decided to check the flag. Portugal.
Luckily the ship didn't sunk, we apoligized and offered help, but heard only a lot of portuguese swearing. At this point we decided to dive before they reveal our position to the British.

You're telling me.
I've now hit the latest I've ever gotten in the game (Feb 15, 1940) in campaign mode. I've had the game almost 8 months now (was stubborn to give up SHII + Destroyer Commander until some friends were on Teamspeak talking about playing it with something they called "Gray Wolves").
I've played some later in single missions and multiplayer, but outside my 2 patrol stint in the Black Sea driving the IID (just wanted to check that area out) I've always started from '39 outta Wilhelmshaven and I play DiD. Think next go round I'll start outta Kiel in a Type IIA.
Most troubling thing is I have to do my patrols in one sitting or pause the game overnight or whatever. I've never been able to save and have the game successfully load that save while out on patrol. Either I do some death dive when I load, or 5 seconds after I load I get a message about abandoning my mission and therefore my career.

I'm sure your problem is fixable with a clean reinstal--are you using GWX or other mods?
I tested it on a clean install of the following:
GWX
SHIII Commander
GWX 16km Optional
Installed SHIII, Installed GWX, Installed Patch (1.02 at the time, now updated to 1.03), used JSGME to install the 16km optional, and then installed SH3 Commander.
SH3 was never installed on this PC before (just got it about 2 months ago, and so therefore I had to install everything fresh) and so I finally got around to reinstalling SH3 + mods about 2 weeks ago, and then patched it up the day 1.03 came out, and yes I did rollback SH3 Commander. I'm actually a bit of an obsessive about that in the fact I do a rollback every time, whether I'm going to install/de-install mods or not simply because not rolling back bit me in the backside once before on the old computer.
So outside of having those mods installed, it is a fresh install. Which for me, since I would never dream of playing without any of the above mentioned mods, I'll just consider it to be a fresh install. ;)
I did a search on the forums here (not Ubi, I dislike their forums for finding anything useful between all the rubbish, this place is much better), and from the searches I found that one problem is related to saving when the wind speed is 0 (the dive of instant death), one problem says it's related to saving too close to a port, and another says it's related to saving underwater or too close to other ships. The second two are supposedly what cause the Abandoned Mission/Career from what I could gather, altho nobody seems quite sure?
I only got the "Death Dive" once, on the old computer mind you, and now that I know it's related to wind speed being = to zero I can just have the Watch Officer give me the current weather and know not to save if the wind speed were ever zero.
The Abandoned Career/Mission problem, however, plagued me horribly on the old computer. Every 2-3 patrols I'd try to save so I could go do something IRL or play another game with some friends, and then come back to that message after loading. So that's the first thing I tried to do on this new computer with the fresh install and I got it again first time out.
I haven't tried it since, but I'd really hate to save in the middle of a great patrol only to find out when I try to load the save that it'll all for nothing. :damn::damn:

Well, I admit I tried going west. I have was reading books about allied boats and watching Operation Petticoat while I attempted to sail the Pacific.
The Pacific is just not ready for the likes of me. Maybe after a few key issues are fixed and some modders improve it drastically....
So it is back to watching Das Boot, reading Iron Coffins, and blowing the Tommies out of the water!
Okay so in my last session that ended mere minutes ago I was tracking a convoy at night off of the tip of Spain. I had lined up a perfect shot in the darkness and was close to 15 seconds from firing when suddenly "We're under attack sir!". Immediate I have to crash dive as it is clear that my infiltration of the convoy has been detected. Waste of a good shot. For the next 2 hours I'm evading this a destroyer. Eventually he forced me to 225 meters where he finally lost me for good. That bugger kept me down so long however that I fell behind the convoy. But I got my revenge.
As I was racing back to catch up I ran into him again. That silly DD is just going on the same course as the convoy (035) and is running at 8 knots (same as the convoy) and its still just before dawn... I can't give up a shot at my revenge. So I get into position, slide in to 3000 meters, fire off one torp and immediately realise that I've not set the range properly and its still at 300! Well that torp nearly hits. But the next one is now set at 2700m and I fire and immediately dive to periscope depth.
After the timer goes to Torpedo Impact +25 seconds I finally hear the explosion. I shoot my peri up and I see a beautiful explosion. But he keeps going... barely. He is flooding badly forward and his props are nearly out of the water. But after about 30 seconds I hear a yelp. My crew celebrates the sinking and I learn that I just sank a Town Class DD for 1100 tonnes.
I love the Atlantic.

This forum noob is with you. I never sign up with a new military until they get their s*** together. I know someone who enlisted in the U.S. Pacific Fleet and said their were so many chain of command conflicts (bugs) that it crashes his good system hard.
