Oct 11, -44. AF sector. U-1305, VIIC/41.

Willie is learning fast, B24´s and Catalina's are far more dangerous for an Uboat then anything the Russians had. 11 days into their first war patrol with U-1305 the crew has downed two B24´s and five Catalina's:rock: Four of them was taken down during a fierce fight after the boat surfaced right below them:rock: But it has taken it´s toll on the boat and Willie has decided to return to base along the Norwegian coast. Some of his new crew members thinks he´s totally mad fighting enemy planes like that, and they are right, a change in tactics is needed to stay alive:hmm:

edit. Willie is now in the 33´rd Flotilla, Flensburg. edit.

Sorry men, that port mentioned yesterday - was Tobruk (there were also 1 CC2, 2 SOT and some small marchants; 1 catapult ship also - info for those who have it included(SH4Ship)). Next target will be the port of Alexandria. I'm aprox. 10 km (north) away from port entrance at silent speed. There is one Greek CA, five to six DD's, three speed boats and about 6 marchants (1CC2, 2SOT, 2SM etc.). The most ineresting target is that Greek Cruiser (by the way the only one Greek CA in recognitial book). It's gonna be the first and the only target. There is no chance to avoid fight with DD's and there is only 20-25m deep. They're 4 DD's on duty and 3 sboats + one catalina hanging over the port. About 40 km from entrance I was attacked by 2 catalinas and 2 sunderlands. All shot down by price of 13% hull integrity (current HI 87%) Next ports - Port Said and Beirut. News about ships there and their bodyguards - tomorrow.

Sorry for lack of update:oops: .
My 27 patrol has came to the end. Greek CA and one DD at Alexandria destroyed. As for Port Said there was a lot of goodies, but also lots of guards (10 -12 DD's, FOcorvets). There was 1 Greek CA, 1 Fiji Class LC, 1 Modern OT, 1 Troop Transporter, 1 C3 and some medium marchants - all about 10 ships. Due to heavy guard I decided to make it a recon mission. As for Beirut - nothing there, just quite small harbour with no ships at all. After Beirut I navigated through Med. to La Spezia. During home trip I completely destroyed 2 small convoys, and two passanger ships. One about 26000 BRT and second about 80800 BRT (Queen Marry). It was the best patrol ever. By the way anihilation of the first small convoy was an example of great cooperation between my sub and Italian Air Forces. They really save my ..... I took 7 marchants, they took 4 marchants and 3 from 5 escort DD's that almost got me:o . The rescue came at the moment they were all (5) very close to my bat ... Italians lost about 8 planes, but frankly it was the best AI air attack I've ever seen during my 27 patrols:yep: . Now, I'm at La Spezia., repairing my hull (77% integrity). See you next time, when I will try to pass to Red Sea through Sues Canal :arrgh!: .

today was the most miserable day i (and BDU) could have. i did the most carefull aproach to a shadowed convoy. i thought the escorts would heve been dealing with the other subs (AND THEY DID :o) and engaged the convoy. to my horror i saw 6 black swans (1 front, 1 behind, 2 left, 2 right) protecting the convoy. some of them were smoking like hell. also one merchie was missing in the convoy.
anyway. i decided it was to late to break of and continued. sank the leading swan, 1 whale factory and 1 large merchie before i got under attack.
hours later i am safe and sound on the surface.
list of KAPUT things:
turm (everything.. even the watch crew didnt want to get on)

Apr 5, -45. 1800, U-1305, 33 Flot, North of AF sector.

When we surfaced at 1830 on the 3´rd the sea was finally calm enough to start reloading external torpedoes. 10min later the radar warner came to life:damn: Proved to be two Catalina´s. The first one got hit and veered of to his right and crashed into the ocean while his wingman passed over the boat, burning, and crashed:rock:
After 15min the RDW came to life again, this time I counted to at least 5 incoming planes, when they where in sight, Mozzies and Cat´s, the crew had just finished reloading so we crash dived just in time.
The morning of the 4´th brought 2 more Cat´s. I did not want to dive before the batteries where recharged and the result was two more Cat´s downed. When we surfaced for the evening recharge we did so when an Mozzie just passed overhead.
He was also shot down, our first Mozzie:rock: But this is way too dangerous and we have taken some damage, the course is set for Norway.

Problem was, Was driving a VIIB and assigned myself U-50.

Upgraded to a Type IXC and it did not assign me a new number.

Using your ealier statement about SH3 Commander not updating, I though prehaps if I updated a new number things would come back together. The boat got very beat up too, down to 33% H.I. Spent 11 Days at sea (yay for SHIII commander!!!!)

During this mission, I had a very lucky 4 torpedo spread

I fired at about 5000 Meters from a convoy. i targeted a Large and Medium Cargo. I fired, withen 1000 meters one of the 4 torpedoes hit a armed trawler and sank it. I was not aiming for him, but it worked. then one torpedo hit and sunk the medium cargo, 2 torps missed their markes. BUT WAIT, there is more. a third torp went out about 5000 meters past its target and some how managed to hit and sink one destroyer, the 4th torp missed completly and hit nothing

what luck eh? Hit and sunk 3 ships with 4 torps. however, I saved after this insane luck, but after being sunk about a dozen times from that save, i was forced to abandon it, and restart from before i attacked the convoy, which ended in the abvove figuires

my latest oders are sending me from Keil to St. Nazarie, so I get to hit the atlantic

I've posted my report somewhere else, but here's again. Adm. Brag, Krvkpt. Hans von Guderian reports as follows:ping: :
February 1943, The entrance to the channel is heavy guarded. There is 10 to 12 DD's and Flower Corvets. I've started my approach at 9.00 about 10 km from the entrance. I was very patient, silent speed, many engine turn offs, and miiiiiiinutes of waiting. When I was about 2 km from the entrance DD had detected me and started it's run. It was hell. I really looked death right in the eyes:dead: , DD droped depth charges and I thought to my self ... it's the end of my brilliant career but ...... DD missed. Great God I couldn't belive it, it almost run over me, only 15 m deep and I'm still alive?. DD droped charges too early, but I did proper use of my aft tube. One DD was gone. In response 4 DD came after me and some planes too, but I managed to reach channel and entered it from it's left support channel or sth. Channel defences are: 4 stationary artillery batteries, 4 stationary searchlights. At Port Said I report presence of: 1 Greek Heavy Cruiser (G. Averof), 1 Dido Class Cruiser, 1 DD, 1 troop transport, 1 small tanker, 1 med tanker and some merchants including 1 large marchant, 1 C3 etc. All about 10 ships. I also report heavy enemy air forces activity. Channel depth is about 15 m. Width about 150 m. Enemy activity in the channel is rather low. In the middle of the channel there is, let's say "lake". There were 3 DD's guarding it. I downed one of them. They are really prepared and ready. One of them (the dead one) detected me, so ... my aft tube fired again. The second one came fast after me but ... funny ... British Airforce save my ...tail. One of planes droped it's payload right on the second DD. Due to attack DD was heavily damaged and broke off the attack meanwhile fighting with heavy flooding. The third DD didn't atack to avoid possible fiendly fire. I sailed away on silence speed, so I'm in His Majesty Air forces debt. At the exit of the Channel there are 2 stationary artillery batterries and 2 stationary searchlights. There're also 2 DD's guarding it. One of them .. on the bottom;) Crossing channel everytime be aware of enemy aviation patrols and prepared to dive. But be careful there is only 15 m deep. Crossing is time and fuel consuming, especially approaching the entrance. I've crossed the channel at night almost at full speed, not mentioned "lake". Nevertheless it's possible to reach Penang (starting point La Spezia) but you have to pay carefull attention to your fuel reserves.:yep: Wish you good luck captains. See you on the ...beach:rotfl:

In meantime on recon mission at north Indian Ocean. Reful and rearm point - Penang

Found convoy, sunk same. Took out the escorts first, except for the last corvette, who tried to ram me once and then simply ran away :o. A few things I'd like this august body of readers to comment on: The Dido class light cruiser and the submarine were sailing in line with the cargos. Since both ship types have significant ASW ability this surprised and annoyed me. Pity to have an agile warship and a good sub sailing in formation at 6 knots, when they could be part of the escort.

I see most of you guys focus solely on cargos. Personally I'm willing to waste half my torps on taking out the escorts first, and finish off the convoy afterwards. Have developed some good anti-destroyer tactics, and by now it's less of a risk to go head-on against the escorts first, rather than hiding down below after each attack. Comments anyone?

Congratz :D . There is nothing wrong with taking out escorts, then having your way with the convoy. If you can get away with it. However, trying to get all escorts in one go greatly reduces your chances of survival.

I have had succes by sinking one destroyer and diving deep per attack. It required 5 attacks (3 nights) to get rid of the escorts.

3 of my officers stayed on deck while an escort attempted to ram us, at such close range they were able to hit their engine room point blank, reducing her max speed to 5 knots and causing an explosion that rendered her easly avoidable, and sinkable after we reached safe distance. Unfortunatly, due to hostile circumstances, we were not able to return to retreive them from the water.

Presumed Drowned.

On this patrol, in my new type IVB U-108 and after a failed attempt to intercept enemy warships of the Norwegian coast I couldn't resist to pay a visit to Scapa Flow. It was a nearly fatal decision as its not easy to evade numerous depthcharge attacks in 15 meters of water. But it eventually led to the sinking of my first aircraft carrier.

.... Hull condition 7,71% and by the gods above and below I swear we were at 230 meters depth and sinking, both electrics shot to hell. After blowing ALL of my compressed air we finally stabilised, and maxed our depth at 234 meters, then sloooowly started drifting towards the surface. Only good news was, were so deep the destroyers left us for dead, so when we finally reached surface they were long gone.

Oct 1, -39, 1215. 7´th Flotilla, Kiel.

Benno Grossman docks U-54, type VIIb, after 31 days at sea. What started as an training trip through the Kiel Kanal turned into his first warpatrol. Upon passing Helgoland orders came to patrol grid AM18. Orders are orders and the course was set, north of Scapa.
On the 5´th an British destroyer were spotted and sunk, 100km north of Scapa.
From the 14´th to the 16´th 5 merchants were sunk in AM51-AM52.
On the 22´nd an merchant was sunk in AN12, only 1km from where the destroyer was sunk.
And on the 24´th yet an merchant was sunk in AN14.
Total tonage: 15500 tons.

Not bad for an green crew, not yet fully trained:up:

On this patrol I found out that chasing a heavily defended convoy in heavy fog is not a good idea. :nope: While chasing a large convoy heading west a destroyer suddenly appeared out of the fog in front of me and passed us at less then 100 meters. It seemed that they were as suprised as I was because I was able to start to crashdive before the DD opened fire. Although my boat was damaged, the U-108 eventually got away to fight another day. :arrgh!:

Summary
Kapitänleutnant Erwin Schmidt and U-28 surrendered to the Allies on 04MAY40. Erwin Schmidt was sent to a POW camp in Scotland where he spent the rest of the war. After the war Erwin Schmidt completed a commercial training course and worked for some years as a commercial representative. Then he retired from this profession to become the director of a sailing school on the island of Elba in the Mediterranean. He was for a long time the chairman of the "Verband der U-Boots-Fahrer" in Germany. He died on 4 November 1982 in Hamburg.

Just finished this one after i torpedoed 2 merchants in convoy in heavy fog and 15 meters waves. I didnt even notice the destroyer cause i was to busy targeting the second merchant. All i heard was 2x ping and then the engines of destroyer coming from aft. He rammed me and throw depth charges so i had to surrender. I had also few men killed by depth charges.

In this career i have seen a battleship for the first time and had a patrol with over 100,000 BRT sunk. Both things happened on my 5th patrol.

90 % realism. I have map update and ext. cam on.

I started to play again after a year or two. i played at 100% before but that just isnt for me. Takes to much time and i dont have it that much. :D

P.s.: Now i started a new career in type IXC out of Lorient on January 1st 1940. First time for me to command a type IX.:yep:

I respectfully submit that some officers (the great majority) at BDU are descendants of baboons. The torpedo load I got in Lorient was of a quality only a decadent pacifist would love. They lack the boom-boom as the grand finalle of their run.

This sad condition of the issued ordinance will make me the laughing stock of the Lorient bars, tabacs, restaurants and bordellos. I may even have to pay for my own drinks.

When I return from this sad patrol I expect the BDU officers to insure I get torpedoes with good boom-boom.

U-124 didn leave on patrol on the 19th of march due to periscope and engine sabotage
problems where fixed on the 8th of april, we left the next and our 4th combat patrol started
on the 15th we found a medium convoy headding for england
weather was perfect..clouds,stormy sea and it was night
first torpedo attack was unsuccesfull, we fired 4 torps and only 1 hit
but the next few attacks where very succesfull
in all we sunk 8 ships from the convoy and 2 on the way home
resulting in 56806 tons sunk:arrgh!:

here is a picture of me checking out the convoy deciding what target to sink in the next attack

U-225 made it back to port
after a rather succesfull patrol
we found an enemy convoy few days into the patrol where HMS Nelson just happend to be
2 impact and 1 magnetic was fired..no more Nelson..rather Nelsunk:rotfl:
we then started taking out the escorts (1 blackswan and 4 flower class)
after that we sailed into the convoy and started sinking ships with the deckgun and using our torpedos
but before using the last torpedo a destroyer came to the convoys aid..dont know where from but we sunk him too
in all we sunk 12 merchants and 7 warships for 111320 tons
but disaster struck on the way home during a storm when suddently an unknown destroyer came speeding out of the fog and ramming us
managed to evade it and return to base

CLASSIFIED INFORMATION

From: U-572 (Type VIIC)
Date: Early 1943

After it was decided to end our operations from base at La Spezia, we received orders at the end of patrol to move through the strait of Gibraltor and dock at La Rochelle. Having repaired and a new stock of provisions onboard from a friendly port we've now almost made clear through "the eye of the needle" in an uncoventional manner, using poor visibility and least guarded parts of the area to determine our route of transit.

Despite the level of constant stress due to our proximity to Gibraltor, I could not resist all the convoy activity through the bottleneck and so we sunk a couple of large tankers as well as another troops transport. The British nearly had me in shallow waters a couple of times. We sunk a V&W with a lucky aft torpedo shot at extremely close range after it caught me with my pants down at periscope depth and there is less than a 100m under keel, so once again, Davey Jones will have to come up and claim his victims.

It was a smaller patrol boat that probably spotted my periscope and radioed in for help. Impossible in this weather. A few more unplanned incidents like this one and I'll be worried about my crew. Perhaps this is the test we were warned about and I feel confident to know that my crew has lasted through most of it. But we're far from home and there are still torpedos left to win this war.

I'm ready for anything. Having spread so much death and misery, it'd only be fair if we met our end here.

U-572 out.

Successful patrol yesterday. Am heading home to Lorient to retire for a short while to prepare for another patrol. I've been granted 20 days leave along with entire crew. A much needed vacation, indeed. So many ways to die in war. Makes you think.

Cannot dwell on such matters, for they sicken my thoughts and stricken me with guilt. The only relief is the comfort that it's kill or be killed. Lost 1 U-boat on November 9th to bad weather. Poor bastards capsized and went down in less than 15 minutes. Only 3 survivors picked up; all others believed to have gone down with the ship.

Strange going-ons at the base. Crane malfunctioned before we left and nearly killed 5 dock workers. Suspected to be sabotage, for the crane was perfectly fine just hours before. Tensions are high between us commanders these days. Dark times for the Reich, indeed; only guaranteed to get worse.

Happy Armistice day, 25 years on.

South of the Rockal Banks.
Today, at ca 1950, we lost two brave men.
We surfaced at 1900 for air and to recharge the batteries. As we found the sea to be calm the decision was made to bring the forw. external torp inside.
At 1935 the radar warner came to life, with at least 15-20 min left before the external was inside:damn: While the men worked their fingers to the bone the flack guns were manned.
10 minutes later the sound of two Catalinas closing in on us was heard, we had no choice but to fight them of for at least 10 min. with the forw. deck full of men and an torpedo still not fully lowered down the hatch.
First pas, only light damage from their guns. Second pas, damage to the rear compartments. Third pas, the boys takes one Cat down:up: But seconds later they were both down, probably hit by shrapnels from the other Cat´s bombs:dead: After three runs at us it then left and we could repair our damages and dive, to 40m, no more.
The boys will be given to the sea tonight at 0000 hours. They were brave men and will be rememberd by the rest of the crew.

Herrman Kruth with crew.

Kapitanleutnant M. Luther reporting:

December 13, 1941
On third patrol with new Type IXB. Extended range and extra eels are great, but the u-boat handles like a tank. Crew are extremely pleased as we just finished attacking a convoy: Sunk 1 troop transport, 2 T2 Tankers, and 2 T3 Tankers. DC attacked for only 15minutes as they lost track of me at 150m.

As good as that convoy attack looks, it could have been a lot better. On our third attack (we shadowed them for 3 days) we were somehow spotted while at periscope depth and 2kt. 3 of our 4 eel's missed on that attack:damn: We then had to break off as the convoy was entering shallow waters near Ireland.

Crew are somewhat concerned about the trip home though. Last three patrols enemy DD's have succesfully intercepted us in dense fog, without damage or lossess however.

Hindsight being 20/20, the extra torps are great on the IXB, but I kind of wish that I had stuck with the more maneuvarable VIIC.

July 1942.
My career started from the beginning, and I have been very fortunate with convoys this career. No escort ever found me! Yesterday I was pinged and depthcharged for the first time this career, and I discovered that the dc blast can make your boat change direction. They fell behind me so they boosted my speed! This corvette was a real amateur, and I got out easily.

They found me because the torpedoes hit a small ship that got in the way. They were meant to hit a big one at the other side of the convoy. I'll be more careful next time.

btw It's great to have such an expert veteran crew now.

Attacked convoy.
1st torpedo blew up a large cargo. 2nd hit a whale factory. 3rd, a magnetic hit large freighter. We dove to 150 meters and escorts dropped DCs all over the place but never at us.

Wondering why 2 ships didn't sink followed convoy and sighted a large freighter, it's stern underwater but still doing 2 knots.

We surfaced and spotted a destroyer 5,ooo meters away. The bloody thing opened fire on us.

We fired 3 shots from the deck gun. One shot hit the freighter, it was enough to send it down.

Destroyer was getting our range and a salvo of shells hit uncomfortably close. We crash dived. End of that story.

Kapitan Lieutenant Sr. Luther

I decided to take a “detour” from my order to patrol the empty grid EJ59 to instead raid Loch Ewe and take on an Illustrious Fleet Carrier docked there. I successfully slipped past 9 warships and a large minefield in midday. My u-boat is positioned at a 170 degree angle, great position for my T II torpedoes with magnetic detonators. They are set at depths of 9, 9.3, 10, and 11 meters; I hope that this will account for the flooding that ensues from the first torpedo.

Firing tubes 1-4! Torpedo Impact! The 4 torpedoes were perfectly spread. Enemy unit destroyed! This will most likely be the last log of Kapitan Lieutenant Sr. Luther as three enemy warships are furiously heading towards me. I pray that the sinking of this enemy aircraft-carrier will help keep the war turned in our favor…

Kapitan Lieutenant Sr. Luther successfully evaded the enemy destroyers for 10 minutes before he was eventually discovered by a C-Class destroyer which pinged him and instantly destroyed his u-boat with side-launched depth charges. He will always be remembered as a hero and inspiration to other u-boat kapitans.

Kapitan Lieutenant Sr. Luther sank over 656,000 tons of enemy shipping over 20 patrols.

Back in St. Lorient preparing to head back out.

Just returned from a little excursion outside of Norfolk and NYC.
My first career with GWX 2.0, started in late 1940, and in 1942 radar is apparently in effect.

Heading home with 61 000 tons in the bank on a dark side-ways-blowing-rain gale night, I was surprised by a destroyer out of no where coming directly at me at 28 kts.

Lost my first casualties: The Watch Officer and a WO who both got in the way of a shell.

Severe damage from the intial shelling and then some damage due to ramming on the way down.
Limped back into port afraid to dive deeper than periscope depth.

I've popped in here with alt-tab to look for something interesting to read before choosing my new Officer and Petty Officer, and getting back on the horse.

U-boat is moving into position at Gibraltar. We intend to move through the strait as planned, but we fear that all is lost since we've had heavy contact reports from our sonar man, Manfred. A lot of patrol activity in the area, but that was to be expected.

We intend to run through the middle of the strait and into the Mediterranean with little hassel. We'll rig for silence, and hopefully, we won't be caught. After getting 75 KM inside of the sea, U-99 will travel along the North Afrikan coast. Probably will remain surfaced for most of the time since it's so damn hot here.

Only bagged one vessel so far: the S.S. Maria; American Liberty Class cargo ship that was carrying trucks and either ammo or fuel (fuel more probable since she left a slick on the surface that continued to burn long after she'd sunk). [See grid for the sinking position.]

Crewmembers are all healthy and in mediocre morale. U-boat is unscathed as of the moment. Anti-aircraft ammunition is full-up; deckgun ammunition is full-up. Torpedo cache consists of all steam torpedoes; all loaded; only one used against the S.S. Maria. No actual watch sightings of enemy vessels or aircraft.

Weather has remained stable. Came across a few squalls, but we've pulled through. Current weather: cloudy with swells of 5 feet and wind speeds of about 7 knots. No rain... yet, anyway. Current temperature: 66*F.

No other news for now, although I do think about our Finnish boys 3 years ago with the Russians coming. I'm calling it a night. Watch is currently posted on deck with strict orders to wake me at the slightest sign of anything on the horizon. Manfred is sleeping at the moment, but Kurt is currently on the sonar. Radioman has called it a night, too. Looking up, I'm fairly sure Kurt is about to fall down dead from exhaustion!
