U-21 (Type IIA) setting sail on Sep 1, 1939.

U-45 (Type VIIB of my last campaign) met her untimely demise when she got too close to Dunkirk during Operation Dynamo.

Well, that was amongst my shortest careers ever.

Lesson learned, don't accidentally hit the crash dive key whilst in the Kiel Canal.

Altho on one hand it was somewhat amusing to watch my boat do a bucking bronco like maneuver of bouncing first the front and then the rear of the boat off the bottom over and over again, the salvage crew expects it to be about a week before traffic will be able to traverse the canal again due to the stream of wreckage I left behind of what was parts of my boat. BdU was not amused by my story at all, however, and I've been put on permanent latrine duties. :88)

Guess I'll start a new career tomorrow. Probably go back to the VIIB. Quite like that boat I do after further trips with it. I used to race to get a IX, but I think for now on unless I transfer somewhere going super long distances I'll stick with the VII.

And now news from October 1940 which got off to a good start sinking one medium cargo ship while being shot at by a destroyer, slipped away with paint damage only.

Late October 1940 on patrol in BE99 two large cargo and a tramp steamer now at the bottom of the sea, heading south to see if I can pick off any more.

Thanks Brag! It's one of my best moment in sh3! I have ever met 'illustrious' one time but failed to sink it (21knots it's really fast :o). So this time when i launch my torpedoes (tubes 1,2,3,4 electric torps) i said '****! they will miss it' ( in french: "et merde! ça a foiré!" ) so i quickly prepare tube 5 and 6 for aft shot and... and i hear this loud explosion! followed by 3 others!
What i like mostly is that i never see him sinking, i heard sounds with hydrophons as i tried to escape escorts! But i was doubtless about his fate!
It was as if i were Von Tiesenhausen with Barham sinking! cool...
If i had failed to sink it, it would be in the video too! I just try to show what happen to me, the good ( illustrious) and the bad (the 5 torpedoes for the C2!). For the part 3 i will try to make it in english!

U-33 back in Lorient.

Went for patrolgrid CG87 on Nov 7, gunned down 4 ships on the way.
Had an intercept Nov 12 with what RA called "Warship", but what turned out to be a british taskforce :o

Came as close as 4400m to HMS Rodney
http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u31/janoch/Rodney.jpg

Emptied all four tubes, all missed, but one took out a small Tribal on the far side of the TF. Sigh. Went north.

2000 km later and nothing! In BE31 got a report of large, slow convoy. Intercepted 12 hours later well ahead of it. Saw no other warships than an old Southhampton and a Flower Class. Targeted 4 large cargo - and all hell broke loose. At least 5 destroyers came racing down and we were forced deeper than we've been before. And now SO reports long distance contacts moving very fast and closing from NW and SE... SE report was a task force... Swordfish now everywhere... Spend 3 hours evading hundreds of DC's... Shaked and stirred, but undamaged. Close to disaster as one of the cargos going down almost sucked us with it :o

6 cargos and that lousy Tribal, 36770 ton.

1 year and 1 month after U-33's first warpatrol, we have now been 201 days at sea and are going for a 3 months leave. Boat and crew are fine, but exhausted.

Hi All,
Seems like my Revenge encounter got some attention, so I guess you better hear the rest of the story.
To begin with, the decision to go for the tankers was done of need: I had miscalculated the time to reach the convoy, and stumbled into it - I was afraid I had been spotted by at least 1 DD. Because of that, I had to crash dive and before I had a chance to come back to periscope depth, the tankers were already going past me (in 2 rows), so I had to take the shot or loose them. Only then did I discover the batteship, in foul weather!

So I did the end-around, but with some difficulty - the convoy changed course, almost 90 degrees!. Anyway, in the end I caught up and got into the convoy. 3 fish reserved for the revenge, 1 in reserve if it wouldn't go down! And what a long wait until the angle was correct...
3 fish gone, 3 hits! But it sailed on! 1 fish from the rear tube then, magnetic even at the risk of a premature detonation.
But no detonation at all - a dud!
And here comes the DD's! Dive deep and reload, as they didn't come close enough to hit anything... But wait! What's that sound? A ship in distress! Sure enough: The Revenge is going down! YAHOO!
Sorry, I didn't get any pictures - it was too dark!

Patrol stats: > 65000. Pretty good, huh?

Then, on the 27´th, we found ourselves in the middle of a gun fight between Bismarck and the Royal Navy. U-53 reporting in.

Just arrived back home at Kiel under the 7th Flotilla after a 26-day patrol to grid square BF17.

Many convoy reports from other boats on the way out and back home, but all too far to catch up with especially in the foul weather of the North Atlantic. On the way back home around the eastern side of Britain, sunk two small merchants for a total of just under 5,000 tonnes. Decent weather on the way home to Kiel.

We're assigned back out to patrol grid BF17... apparently BdU wants us to try to intercept some convoys comming south from Britian through King George's straight. We'll see how it goes though with the damned weather.

Just for the hell of it and for some easy torpedo practise, I went back to the torpedo training mission in the naval academy. So there it is, your medium cargo at 1700 meters and a tramp steamer in the foreground at 800. My plan, as always, to fire a spread of 3 at the medium cargo, set it to magnetic pistol and run them under the tramp at more than 2 meters under his draught. Then as he reacts to the torps that will miss him he starts to move and I fire at him with a a single impact pistol.

Well one promlem. I didn't set the salvo of 3 to run at 10 meters, no I left them by mistake at the stock 5. So much to my surprise I have 3 quick explosions on this little tramp. What an explosion! And since he's less than 800 meters away it was so thrilling.

Funny. Naval Academy thrilling.

U-48 reached Narvik following first battle having relocated from the Atlantic as instructed. Received intel that a task force was approaching. Estimated a nighttime arrival 12th-13th April 1940 and deployed in ambush on the surface in the deep water of the outer fiord. 0100 hrs observed enemy task force of 10 DD and HMS Nelson headed to Narvik. Closed on surface. Low on ammo due to previous patrol sinkings. Fired final 4 forward steamers at HMS Nelson from 2.5km. Turned away at full speed and crash dived at first impact. Three hits and HMS Nelson dead in the water and sinking :arrgh!: . Dived to 180m and silent. DDs like flies. After an hour they continued with their misson to Narvik leaving U-48 to put a rear T1 into HMS Nelson. Forward Magazine exploded. She went down in seconds. Our first BB:sunny:
Without the fire power the attack on Narvik failed. Avoided the 9 returning DDs. Out of ammo and Bdu ordering us home.

78,000 tons, a Knights Cross and promotion to Kapitenleutnant. Good patrol.

SenT salvo of 4 torpedoes against HMS Rodney, which was amid a convoy. I torpedo exploded prematurely but other three reached their target in most satisafatory manner. Rodney went down in less than two minutes. :smug:

present tonnage 68,000. 6 torpedoes left.

Data: T-2 elctric torpedoes. sea state light. large moon. Range 2600 meters, salvo spread 1 degree, depth 7 meters.

The gory details:
Had trouble intercepting convoy, which had changed course. Was in lousy flank position but having only a couple of hours of darkness left decided to go in.

While looking for targets spotted Rodney on opposite flank of convoy. But if I accelerated , I could be under 3,000 meters from it's projected course. I decided on a fan shot of 4 with one dgree spread. Just before firing a small freighter got in the way.

I fired once the little one cleared. A few seconds later one of the torps exploded prematurely. I began my dive right away.

The bloody stopwatch did its thing, it stopped. By this time I thought the whole thing would be a miss.

An explosion and "Torpedo treffer"

I thought, it had hit a medium freighter. Then two more explosions and "she's going down"
I topped the game and went to screenie mode. It was the Rodney blowing up. Must have hit a magazine, for even the explosion was short lived just one big bang. In seconds it was over.

I stayed quiet at one knot and the escorts never got close enough .

U-97 out of Salamis, East of Valletta, april 1942. Two liners and a wandering large merchant so far this patrol.

Jumped by two Mosquito's today, returned fire, dived to 75 meters. Six eels left.

Lots of unknown warships on the hydrophones, but due to distance and speed, unable to engage.

Course set for friendly warship up north :smug:

Kaleun Hans Mayer reporting.

Whilst out on patrol we happened upon a large convoy. We pulled away and I ordered flank speed to overtake. Once in postion we dived to around 80 meters and intercepted from the 2 Oclock area. When we reached 80 meters we went silent and levelled out at around 48 meters through natural boyancy. We snuck under the lead destroyer, and as soon as we were clear I ordered a depth of 14 meters.

Imagine my suprise to find a Dido class ship right in the middle of the convoy! I ordered a speed of 2kt's, secured from silent running and lined up on her. As soon as the angle was right I opened the tube doors and launched 4 magnetic torpedos at her. When all torpedo's were clear, we dived at flank speed to about 150 meters, heading under the convoy.

The destroyers started pinging us at around 60 meters, but we held our nerve and carried on at flank until we got to 150 meters, where we went silent and turned 10 to port. This was when we heard all 4 torps hit, from the sounds of it she went down pretty fast.

What followed was about an hour of depth charging, never near enough to do any damage. After the hour when all sounds above had ceased, I ordered periscope depth, ahead full, and secured from silent running. Sure enough the destroyers had gone. We surfaced and started to celebrate our biggest sinking in ernest

Oberleutnant Johann Grassler, commander of the U-123, has been lost with all hands sometime on December 22nd, 1940 in the vicinty of Scapa Flow. His last orders were to infiltrate the near by naval base, attack and then fall back, his first order was completed, but his second was not. Caught in sudden shallow water, and taking on heavy flooding in the bow compartments, Johann had no choice but to surface and await capture.

Instead the British opened fire, puncturing the hull with Flak and cannon rounds, killing the surrendering deck crew and sending the remaining crew along with their Kaleun, to the bottom. His loss has left a small reward of 45,432 tonnes of merchant and military shipping being sunk in his 5 patrols...

I decided to take a look what was going on, turned out to be some kind of British invasion task force, with troop ships and dd's.
Don't know my history good enough to remember what was going on.

They were all lying still in the water, except two dd's. The water was so shallow, I had a hard time getting in position.
When I approached they started firing...at the approaching Stuka's!
I sank a Fiji, a dd and a troop transport all with 0 gyro, then the luftwaffe came in and sank 6 more ships

Started from KIEL in 1939, worked all the way to 1940, then GWX came in, installed the first version, lived to 1941, and with 1.02 to november 1942. Then, I reinstalled all on a new HD, and continued with 1.03 now in june 1943.. what a mess! (planes someone?)

I think I start over from scratch, to feel free again, but not before I see december 1943. Its darn hard now.

Due to my cautioness (right word?) we lived for a couple of years, only to be sunk twice, due ignorance, (subnets.. not counted) and another stupid thing I cant remember well. I thought it wasnt right. But also not much tonnage, 45,000 per mission average.

So, will we see the end of the war?

Things are looking up!

Just escaped from a pretty severe depth charging convoy attack!

I found the convoy on hydrophones. Surfaced. Medium fog, wind - 7 meters per second.

We head over recharging batteries and compressing air. We are then spotted by a Black Swan coming out of the fog. Dived to Periscope depth, they are pinging looking for us, they passed our stern torpedo tube. BOOM! Magnetic shot to the engine room renders the big boy crippled.

More escorts come in actively searching for us, but not quite able to locate. Convoy is now coming up fast in my periscope, to my delight I find that I am now INSIDE the lines! YESS! To my left, large Cargo. To my right, Large Merchant, Convoy still sails straight and normal.

They are coming towards us at bearings of 310, and 040. So I set my T1's to slow out of tubes 3 and 4 sending them over to the left to the Large Cargo. Fire. Waited till there was 30 seconds till impact. Fired 1 and 2 at the Large Merchant.

All four connect the Cargo got it first then about 6 or 7 seconds later the explosion from the Large Merchant lit the sky it was loaded with munitions and weaponry, before we were forced to dive before, I radioed in the ocntact report, at Periscope Depth BdU sent back a message of good work.

In little short of an instance we had gone from 0 tons, to 21,000 tons. The black swan I crippled before eventually succumbed to her wounds and she sank. make that, 22,346 tons. :D

Problems. 3 destroyers inbound to our location. Time for alarm. Down we go to 70m but this time I ordered 80 just to be safe. We hit 80 and the three swarming round us began a depth charge drop, one of the destroyers ran up from behind us and dropped and he hit a good drop too. All along our port side we could feel the explosions, the boat was shaking violently and we were all hanging on for dear life. (I even clung onto the desk! LOL)

After that we decided to run silent run deep, eventually leveling off at 150m and slinking away at silent speed. Not a bad Christmas Present bonus (yep its December 25th 1940 in the game) But wait, Santa was not finished yet. A lone Large Cargo trying to catch up. One torpedo which we had reloaded in our stern before we were forced deeper was ploughed into the side of the big clunker then surface a couple of dozen deck gun rounds down she went!

We now stand at 31,000 tons. Just to be safe its back down to Periscope Depth and we got away. :D Merry Christmas U-101!

6 torpedoes fired. Plenty more to go! Assuming we can find another big juicer before our fuel gets too low!

passed scapa flow (didnt go trough it this time) and sank 3 large merchants.

4 days later i arrived at AL75 and stopped my engines.
2 hours after our arrival suddenly 3 planes show up and i ordered to mann the AA gun. was lucky the missed me with 2 or 3 meters. shot one down and damaged the other 2. 1 of them crashed later.

5 hour after the plane attack a TF of destroyers show up. i counted 2 Hunt I, 2 V&W,1 C-class and 1Hunt II. i ordered to PD. i knew they would find us so i took a big risk.
i set all torpado's to 1m and fast speed. opened all tubes and waited.

when they were close enuf i fired my torpedo's. 1 torpedo for each destroyer.
then crash dived with silent running.
about 30 or 35 seconds later my torpedo's staring to hit.

the 2 V&W's went down. the Hunt I's were damaged and stopped. the other 2 torpedo's missed.

strangely enuf the Hunt II and the C-class destroyers just continued to sail south.
after waiting 2 hours i went back to PD and sank the remaining Hunt I destroyers.

2 weeks later i docked at willemshaven with 6 destroyers,2 planes and 8 merchants downed.

I'm not amused, someone up there has it in for me but Befehl ist Befehl, so..

BF23 The weather is clear but heavy swells...good for the planes, not so much for us

Sank several lone freighters approaching st.Georgs Kanal

snuck into Irish bay on south coast to load external stores, apparently someone called in the British, despite the filthy weather, surprised by Destroyer just outside Irish waters...managed to evade.

Onward..ran into an outbound convoy sunk another whaler and a medium merchant (broke her back)

evaded escorts and headed further north running submerged all day, lots of warships moving about up there, only surfacing at night to race further north and recharge batteries,

AM92 torpedoed 2 tramp steamers, they didn't sink, eventually driven off by MTBs

Spotted a strange freighter, one of the petty officers informs me it's a great lakes freighter, hardly looks seaworthy, it's also an American, ignore it

torpedoed lone large merchant, sinks quickly another 10k tons

1 fish left in the forward tubes, inbound convoy detected, they're going to steam right over me, hug the bottom..
reached periscope depth in the middle of the convoy, used my last fish in a shot to nothing at a medium tanker crossing my bows at a bad angle...She blows up, must have been carrying AVgas, dived for the bottom again, evaded escorts, stayed under till passing taskforce was well away

patrol completed, heading south, why haven't we seen any planes yet?

near Scilly Islands, spotted large merchant, too rough for the deck gun, schade
She opens fire on us, these things carry guns now!?!

evaded hostile merchant, continue south, passed Brest on the 3rd of March
return to St. Nazaire uneventful.

40.000 tons, a nice haul, and not one single plane, maybe not everyone up there hates me....
I got promoted to full Kapitanleutnant , drinks are on me :()1:

I'd like to hear your thoughts on taking a IXB or C out of Lorient through gibraltar (and possibly suez (for the truly suezidal) docking in Mogadishu before it falls to the British and going back the way you came.....doable?

on GWX i went trough the channel just 1ce whitout trouble. those picts are from WAC  .

you have a splendid idea there mate. as soon as i have a french base il pass gibraltar :arrgh!:.

and where is suez ? seems verry interesting.

i do this with a IXB type. before my IXB it was a VIIB type
