Top Ten Subsim
Events of the 2000's
Jan. 1, 2010 by Neal Stevens

The Number 1 Subsim event of the 2000's
1. Silent Hunter series marches on.
Unlike the
90's where new subsims were being produced annually, the new decade saw the
trend decline. Sonalysts created two new games, Sub Command and Dangerous
Waters. Akella came out with a few varieties of pirate games, and
Tesseraction released Enigma, but the most consistent title was Ubisoft's
Silent Hunter series. Ultimation kept the franchise breathing with SH2, Producer
Florin Boitor and the Romanians exploded the genre with SH3.
At E3, I
knew on first glance that SH3 was a benchmark simulation. It still has
not been surpassed. The standard of excellence
continued with SH4 and the upcoming SH5 looks to bring a virtual boat to
life. Silent Hunter games always feature a realistic, functional TDC and the
essential options that permit the player to simulate combat (as opposed to
merely playing a game) with limited map updates and target information.
Today, when you talk of sub games, you're talking Silent Hunter.
