I have a save game for one of these type events. I saved before the attack started.

That is an Artificial "Intelligence" problem. Most planes, when attacking, do not know how to properly fly their airplanes, unless they are set to "Elite" status, and even at that, will still occasionally "stall" their planes, as you guys have witnessed. Anything lower than "Elite", and the planes, besides not seeing things", have issues even staying in the air when they turn. The big problem comes in with planes attached to ships, such as CV or CA, etc., is that plane assumes the competency of the ship, such that a CV that is "Competent" (middle setting) "launches" planes that are also "Competent", and they have issues making the first attack run, much less turning and making a 2nd run. "Eets-uh Catch-uh 22-uh..." This is one reason that you'll see most of the CV and similar set to "Veteran" level. So, you can either have "Ducimus' Super-Evil Planes", along with a ship they are attached to that will be capable of dodging any torpedo you shoot, and able to shoot your periscope lense out at 2500 yards within 30 seconds, and / or send a volley of torps of their own your way -OR- have "normal" ship AI, and planes that will occasionally crash on attack runs (which did happen in real life)... ??

that's not the story i read. episode 3 (goldmember) explained dr. evil's childhood and there was no reference to ducimus. only an evil belgian guy and his web-footed wife. and you know what country belgium is next to, don't you?

@Bleiente. we're just having a bit of fun.

Found a bit of a major problem. I submerged to hide from some planes, as I regularly do, but this time, when I surfaced, the watch crew didn’t appear on the tower, and CO2 started building up - despite the fact that the diesels were running!

That Co2 issue is a Stock game bug from day one.....we can't fix it. A workaround is for you to save your game before your crew dies, exit to the desktop (DO NOT use Alt-Tab. Quit the game entirely!), then restart and reload the save point.

By the way, NEVER use Alt-Tab to return to the desktop while leaving the game loaded. Some have said this Alt-Tab procedure is what causes the Co2 buildup, however it's been my past experience that it was NOT how I had it happen to me when playing the Stock game. It just happened. But, the advice of not using the Windows "shortcut" Alt-Tab is still a good one. SH4 doesn't like you leaving it running in the background while you step away.....exit the game.

Default A couple of questions...

I have a couple questions.

1) - Are all Sampans and Fishing Boats to be considered "enemy" Sampans?

2) - What is the radius of the enemy air patrols? I'm guessing around 450 nm.

3) - Have night time enemy air patrols been implemented? If so, when do the night time enemy air patrols occur beginning 1942? 1943? 1944? 1945?

I tried searching but couldn't find any direct references to these questions.

Thanks!

Question #1.... All Sampans are enemy commandants, treat them as such. Consider that being detected by a Sampan is the same as any other enemy contact detection. It will bring enemy air/sea units to your position due to the detection. As long as there are enemy ship units within the area, or airbases (land based or carrier) within the capable strike distance of the planes used at that base.

Not all fishing boats are enemy controlled, some are friendly. You need to be aware that detection by them are the same as the Sampans if enemy controlled.

Question #2....Each plane has a MaxRadius= parameter in it's .cfg file. This is what defines how far a plane will travel from it's base (land or carrier). For instance, a Kate is set to 600 (which is believed to be in Kilometers. The game doesn't give us a "How to Modify" instruction on the matter!). A Betty is 1800.

If it's converted to Nautical Miles then 1800 k is about 972 nm; 600 k is 324 nm.

Sine each plane can have different MaxRadius figures it's hard to say what will be the actual distance traveled. There is no random "Patrol" flight from the base. If planes are overhead, their either "scripted" to be going from point A to B in the mission, or they are spawned from a close base source (land or carrier) due to a detection by the enemy. The plane will head towards the last known detected position, and will rely on it's sensors (visual or other) to attack the enemy if found.

Question #3.....As I said above, the planes are not randomly flying about, or simply on patrol for no good reason. There is no "implementation of night time patrols" in the game. The game has a "modifier" that (among other factors) will determine the "chance" for night time attacks to take place. This "modifier" is 0.4 in Ultimate, where the Stock game had it at 0.5. Again, it's our best guess that lowering this modifier, lowers the chance of night time attacks (where's the game instructions to modding?!?). However it does not eliminate it; nor is there a "Date/Specific Year" parameter influencing night time attacks that can be implemented.

... and, while I'm not certain as to its 'completeness' in the search, to target a particular thread only, you would have to use something like duckduckgo for the search engine. You go to the first page of a thread you want to search, and copy the address. Then go to duckduckgo and type "site:" in the search box, and then paste the copied addess. Doing such with the FotRSU thread would have a search term like
"site:http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=226270 sampan"
which would yield this hit:
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/show...73#post2564673
If you do a similar search in google, it will find many more hits, since it searches the site and not just the thread. You might be able to limit the search with their Advanced settings, but it's easier to use duckduckgo. Although, as you can see, it doesn't get the new "hit" of your above post...

Thanks! That helps me understand the workings of the game.

Bałao class out of Brisbane, Jan 1944.
I start and check sunset and sunrise times. They appear to be reasonably close to archived almanac times. I then proceed toward the Bismarck Sea at 1x time leaving the simulation to run day and night saving as I go. I do this because I’m going about my daily routine listening to Fred’s Radios in the background, interacting with the game from time to time. I finally arrive at the Bismarck Sea patrol area which is almost due north of Brisbane, so I haven’t crossed any in-game “time zones.” On my way I notice that the sunset-sunrise times are getting progressively later (earlier?) so sunrise is happening at midnight.
I then go back and load my save game whence I started and this time I use time compression all the way to the Bismarck Sea. When I check sunset-sunrise times they are when they should be.
It seems that by playing at 1x the celestial sphere gets out of sync with game time.
I’ve made plenty of save games within both branches, the 1x branch and the time compression branch.
I’ve also noticed some other issues which may lead to understanding this phenomenon such as being attacked by air in the middle of my “game night” (in 1x) while the clock indicates it should be daylight.
I’ll leave this description here and hope that one of the developers has some ideas as to what might be causing this.

I've read it......"Base Time 2018" (actually a couple of times, my "comprehension" side of the brain needs to digest!!), and find it really interesting!! You may have discovered a flaw that definitely comes from trying to play a Windows XP era game on systems that are too advanced for its own good.

Something similar has to do with my findings of playing the game on my Windows XP system and playing it on my Windows 10 computer. I've actually "timed" events on one computer, compared to the other, and have seen differences in outcomes! The faster computer delivers faster results than the slower computer. I forget what I was doing some months ago, but to get to the same world position using time compression took longer in actual game time for the slower Windows XP computer, than it did on the much faster Windows 10 machine!

Which does nothing but spell TROUBLE for trying to figure out what one person discovers, can't be found by another player due to computer spec differences!?!
