Top Ten Subsim
Events in 2007
Jan. 1, 200 8

The headlines in 2007 were marked with new releases,
patch mysteries, heightened player anxiety, long-anticipated projects
reaching completion, and a few surprises. Let's take a look back at some of
the top subsim stories of 2007.
10. Battlestations: Midway
After
a long and somewhat shadowy development history, this naval game hit the
waves in the spring of 2007, and guess what? It was pretty good. The
simulation aspects were dumbed down but the gameplay was engaging and fun.
Since it came as a PC or X-box 360 title, this is probably the best naval
game to ever hit a console. Despite the limited amount of missions, Eidos
released a nifty little game that appealed to causal gamers and first-time
subsim players.

9. PT Boats shows progress.
Back
when Silent Hunter III was still ten months away from release, Russian
developer Akella (Sea Dogs, Pirates of the Caribbean) was showing off an
interesting WWII naval sim called PT Boats: Knights of the Sea at E3 2004 in
Los Angeles. Over the last three years, work has progressed, a new interface
appeared, and now news that PT Boats will be suited up for both DirectX 10
and 9. Not only will the player be able to command large engagements from
the tactical map and RTS view, he can take the helm on the
captain’s bridge and control all the vessels under his command. The game is
still slogging through the early stages of beta but Akella has given Subsim
an inside look--watch for a PT: Boats Demo soon ™.
Until then,
here are some exclusive sample screens.
8. Pirates of the Burning Sea reaches beta (really!).
Pirates
of the Burning Sea (say, what is a Burning Sea, anyway? It sure
doesn't sound safe for wooden ships.) is primed to
be the first pirate/sailing-sim massive multiplayer online game. It has
completed open beta testing and will be released in early 2008. This is
another long-awaited game (we
first checked it out in 2003), and this one seems to have benefited from
the protracted development time. The game is set in the
18th century
Caribbean, and players can choose one of three nations, England, France or
Spain, or the role of a pirate and battle it out for glory and power. POBS is a really
detailed sim, there are deep
layers of economy, ship & character management, and naval combat. The
player can model his character with numerous physical details so that every
online captain will be unique. After spending some time with POBS for an
upcoming review, I can see where a lot of naval enthusiasts will be sucked into
this world. And loving it!
