 SUBSIM   NEWS
June 2001 - Feb 2002

Update 2/02: Silent Hunter II Patch news. Producer Shawn Storc sent us the pending patch list. Expect the patch around the first week of March or sooner.

a. MULTIPLAYER SUPPORT
The primary purpose of this patch is to introduce multiplayer support to Silent Hunter II, and to introduce interoperability with Destroyer Command. This involves a few major changes:
- Added support for multiplayer with other SH2 users.
- Added support for multiplayer with DC users.
- Support for the ubi.com matchmaking service
- Numerous (generally minor) changes to data files and 3D models to bring SH2 and DC up to the same standard.
- The Ubi.com game service installer is included in the directory Ubicom. If you wish to use the game service, you need to run the installation program located in this directory.

b. FIXES - Fixed problem with occasional interface file corruption and crashes on Windows 2000 and XP systems.
- Fixed intermittent crash in damage control station on Windows 2000 and XP systems
- Fixed problem involving the "spawning" of surface ships in scenarios. This fixes a crash in the "Fortress Europe" mission.
- Moved storage of interface textures from system memory to video memory. This fixes an occasional game slowdown or crash on certain configurations of Windows 95/98/ME systems and certain video cards.
- Fixed intermittent crash caused when aircraft targeted while the AI manned the deck gun. Additionally, the deck gun will now no longer fire at aircraft when "Man the deck gun" is selected.

c. ENHANCEMENTS -
- AI ships will now undertake strenuous efforts to avoid running aground.
- AI ships will attempt to avoid collisions with each other. If they collide, they will work to extricate themselves.
- Sonar contacts are now more difficult for enemy ships to re-acquire after the contact is lost.
- Enemy depth charge attacks are now somewhat less accurate.
- The water's surface is now displayed with both animated "chop" and an additional subsurface layer.
- The Green/Red halves of TDC dials denoting port and starboard were reversed (they are now correct).
- "Spawned" surface ships now emit smoke from their stacks.
- German 1936 type destroyers now emit smoke from their stacks.
- Auxiliary cruisers now use a more appropriate 3D model.
- "Man AA guns" sound effect is now more appropriate.

d. SCENARIO-SPECIFIC CHANGES
- "Matchlight" mission now contains enough enemy merchant shipping to make its secondary objective completable.
- "Auxiliary Cruiser" mission has had changes made to unit dispositions, and had its briefing updated.
- "Western Approaches" no longer has a British task force running into an island.
- In "Drumbeat," "Blitzkrieg," and "Fortress Europe," tonnage credit for sunk merchants will no longer disappear after several days.

e. DOCUMENTATION
- A 'documentation' directory will be created in the Silent Hunter II install directory. This directory will contain the following documents:
- SH2Multiplayer.pdf Documentation for the multiplayer feature
- SH2Manual.pdf The electronic version of the game manual

This list is (of course) subject to change.

Update 2/02: Big news on the SSI front:  Destroyer Command has gone GOLD and should be in stores before the end of the month. Larry Bond let slip the news that Harpoon 4 is under development and could be finished by year's end. No exact release date is stated or implied.

Update 2/02:  Leif Andersson's Type VII Project website now sports a very compelling in-game movie.  Type VII breaks new ground in a subsim by enabling the player actually descend the bridge, close the hatch, sit at the periscope and go in and out of several key compartment, including the control room (which is manned by the way, with computer controlled characters!) and the captains quarters. "The goal is to have a fully working 3D U-boat in which you can walk around freely in a Quake-like style. You will also be able to operate the different systems in the boat in a very detailed way compared to the sims I have seen so far," says Leif. Watch the video and see if you agree. We were thrilled.

Update 2/02:  Destroyer Command continues to plow along with the dev team committing their all to doing as fine a job as possible. The gold date is coming very soon but they won't say exactly, only that when the day arrives, you will read it here first. A multiplayer patch for Silent Hunter II with some new refinements will arrive at the same time.

Update 12/01:   Nuclear Sub Force: Cold War Patrol Nears Halfway Mark The first full 3D nuclear submarine simulation is nearing the halfway point of its development, and a long lead preview is available for download at Mike 'Red Ocktober' Hense's Sub Base 1 http://home.att.net/~subbase1 The simulation is set in the late '50s to early '60s and is played out against the cold war tensions of the day that existed between the United States and the former Soviet Union. In the final release version you will be able to take command of the USS Nautilus on its historic journey under the polar ice... or take a Russian Hotel class missile boat on a strategic missile patrol off America's eastern seaboard. The sim can be played either from the Soviet or the American side and includes at least four US nuclear subs and 3 Russian nuclear subs, each uniquely modeled with distinctive interiors and features intended to make this the most realistic submarine experience you can have without having to get a security clearance. Anticipated release date is late first quarter 2002. Publishing details have not been finalized as of yet.

Update 11/01: Looks good! Exciting! Full of Adventure! That's what we think about the early screens of Sea Dogs II we saw coming out of Moscow. It looks like a good bet to expand on the great gameplay and simulation aspects of the original.

Update 08/01:   The news we have come to expect has arrived once again. The Silent Hunter II release date is now targeted for mid-October with Destroyer Command to follow. While it may seem the development team has retreated to the Bahamas, in truth the activity in SSI and Ultimation's shops has been stepped up. New underwater visuals have been added, complete with depth charges and explosions. Dynamic inclusion factors have been added to the scenario design so the missions will play differently. More sound effects, crew voices, and improved AI round out the latest enhancements.

Update 08/01:   This interesting tidbit floated across our bow recently. Seems an indie developer is putting together a subsim titled "U-boat". The website says "you have a wide choice between 10 different subs and features realistic textures, realistic sounds, fully rendered vehicles and characters, intelligent enemies." They claim to at 45% complete on the coding. Sounds verrry interesting!  .
