Can we trust the Internet?

We all know the web is big real big. Tons of information is out there are we sure in what we are reading? In the terms of world events or even local home news.

The Media is a powerful tool and weapon which can make you stop and think but how much of it is true for example most folks here read the BBC thread about the news reader wearing the cross. The BBC states they are circular and yet on the web you can find information they are not and slanted to wards the hot topic here. I suspect a lot of you found contradicting articles and wondered which is really telling the truth.

Part of being on the internet is that you must take everything you read with a grain of salt. This requires common sense. That actually is it's archilles heel as well, since many people lack common sense and the ability to analyze. Sadly, that leaves many believing every last word they read. Anyway, that is why I wrote the World Wide Web of Misinformation post here earlier. Their is plenty of mis-information to be found out there.

As a test yesterday, I was reading a Truth blog, and purposely posted something against the blogs article that was completely contradictory to what they were trying to say - and to back it up, I used logic and evidence. Guess what? They never posted my reply, yet continued to post everyone elses reply that was pro article. Further evidence that it is easy to find sites pushing a particular view and if you disagree, you won't ever get your say or be acknowledged. All mis-information. Nice.

There is hope at least since science classes in any University teach how to question and analyze articles that you read as a requirement. We need this sort of training, but sadly again, many people will never go to college to hear or study these kinds of ideas that teach us to be critical of what it is we read.

I think all of this helps spread radicalism and ideas related. The question is, what is the solution or answer to this mis-information, and how can it be fixed? Or can it be fixed? This is again technology (In this case, the communication area of technology) growing faster than we can deal with and we have a clear lack of control of it. THen again, is it something that we want control of? I dunno. A case of more questions than answers again.

I don't trust the 527 Media, why should I "trust" the internet. Everyone's got their own agenda -- I certainly have mine. Which is what makes the "news" so difficult. You have to figure out someone's agenda to be able to decode the news they are publishing.

More than one source. Preferably sources that absolutely hate each other.

I know some teachers are dead against information from the net, i experience this first hand when a network admin, the male teachers would ask me to make sure none of their students browsed the internet for information, to them there was more BS than truth to be found on the net. While the female teachers would tell their students if you dont know the answer do a google!

(Wolf)BLITZER: I want to get to some of the substance of domestic and international issues in a minute, but let's just wrap up a little bit of the politics right now.
Why should Democrats, looking at the Democratic nomination process, support you instead of Bill Bradley, a friend of yours, a former colleague in the Senate? What do you have to bring to this that he doesn't necessarily bring to this process?
(Al)GORE: Well, I will be offering -- I'll be offering my vision when my campaign begins. And it will be comprehensive and sweeping. And I hope that it will be compelling enough to draw people toward it. I feel that it will be.
But it will emerge from my dialogue with the American people. I've traveled to every part of this country during the last six years. During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet.

From the 2000 Presidential campaign. A running joke which I like to bring up now and then.
