Default They MISSED!! So uhm..how long am I safe? :)

In the manual, it's mentionned that when a destroyer depth-charges an area, that area is "ruined" for a while (at least as far as sonar tracking goes) because of the sound generated by the explosions. I'm just wondering, some of the emergency maneuvers, like double-knuckles, take a while to execute.

Is the sound of the boat going to flank speed for that long really obscured or...?

I don't think this is modeled in SH3 at all unfortunately. I've gotten the "We've been detected" message from going to flank even while dc's are still blowing up all around me.

Ive been able to lose attacking escorts by increasing spead during dc runs. However, Im pretty sure that on a few occasions I have alerted them to my presense as well. I dont think there is any concrete timetable here. Such as, you will be safe for "x" amount of time after a dc attack. Its been my experience that sometimes it works and sometimes it dont.

Generally I try to avoid going to flank spead unless Im REALLY in trouble. Seems to me every time I have done that I might as well be shouting through a bull horn "HERE I AM"

When being dc'ed I will go silent run at 1 kt and only increase speed if the dcs are getting close. I tend to use the speed bursts to make quick alterations in my depth or course when the cans are going off then go quiet again as soon as they stop. Once I get a bit of distance, say, 1000m I will risk going to 2kts.

You also have to keep in mind that, depending on the number of DDs attacking you, you may not be able to get away with much. With one DD, you can make all kinds of noise for a short time after it makes its run since you will be in his baffles for a bit. With two or more they tend to take turns listening for you while their mates attack.

Yer best bet is to go silent, go deep and only use short speed burtst while the explosions are going off. Avoid going to flank unless the cans are falling right on yer head.

I've seen "We've been detected" when running silent a 1 kt. Come to find out they had detected the decoys we'd tossed out. Scares ya a wee bit but it's great to see the escorts pass by and dc the spot them were discharged at.

In all reality, asdic was useless about 200m infront of the ship using it. Therefore, when you hear the high RPM of the ships engines and the pinging stops, the ship is on his depth charge run. It is at that point you hit full throttle and turn hard left or right because he has lost you and is making his best guess at your location. Do hard knuckes help? Yes they do as you are now headed in a different direction than the asdic operator believes you are going. Once the ship has dropped his charges and is moving off, drop to silent running once more. I do not know how modelled in the losing of U-boat contact is but I sure lose the warships on my hydrophone when they are 180 degrees behind me. In other words, my electric engine noise has drowned out the noise from the warship. So I would suspect that your dodge and perry make you elusive to the asdic.
