Default Anchors!!!

Since I got the game, this has kind of bugged me. Submarines have anchors, they are clearly visible on the hull. Why isn't there an option to 'lower/raise anchor'? Personally, when I'm trying to conserve fuel/ammo, and am simply reloading, repairing, or killing time in a patrol zone, it is kind of annoying when wind/currents carry my ship. Dropping anchor would allow me to maintain my position, which could be useful for many other purposes (laying in wait to attack a convoy in shallow water, for example)

Someone should make a mod...

The problem is depth, in the average patrol area, the depth is between 170m and over 1000m. I'm not sure that any ship carries those lengths of chain. You will find that anchoring would have been restricted to maximum depths of around 30 or 40m, even that is probably stretching things.
Yes anchoring would be a good option though

I would love a mod where damage to the bow of a merchant whould cause the anchors to fall into the sea. Would be good deck gun candy.

great so what is the Con side of the anchor

if you dont know it and pressed accidently the Lower Anchor button...you return to base ....and when the depth is good enough for the anchor to nail itself into the ground what you will get...that ur sub is beeing pulled up from behind and flips over

If you have 1.000 meters anchor chain in a u-boat it will never float again.
I dont know for sure how much it weights, but few tons I suppose ?

Beats the Hell out of accidentally firing a torpedo:rotfl:!

I actually would like it. And some models of ships with anchors down. But no, it's not too important.

remember: With Bernard aboard, everything that lowers into the sea must be considered a risk....:rotfl:

There have been many sub and naval sims over the years, and not one of them has ever had anchors. This one has added more detail than any that have gone before it, but still people want more.

I'm not knocking you for asking, because it's a good question. Ask for anchors, but please don't complain because they didn't even think of it; nobody can think of everything, especially something relatively minor. Maybe now that you've said it they'll add them to SHIV.

But I doubt it.

Well, they were considerate enough to render them on the subs themselves, that's the main reason I'm curious.

Imagine dragging your loose anchor behind you with a nice cluster of those volatile balloons (mines) wrapped around the chain....... then your propellor.

To clarify my position from above, I say add anchors.

Pros:
  • Adds hazards to harbours (getting anchor chains snagged in your propeller). This could be done fairly easily without having to actually animate the chain being entangled in your prop. Just stop the boat when the propeller touches the chain and you're home free. A bit akin to how sub nets are implemented, but don't work realistically.
  • Keep you from drifting.
  • Makes for nice eye-candy.
  • Battleship anchors make for good anti-midget sub weapons.
Cons:
  • Development time.
  • Moving with anchor down (just make it so that you can't. Have the anchor automatically rise upon engaging engines or something).

They have to have thought about it, it's just that it's not such an important feature that it matters.
