I suppose it's a bit cold-hearted of me to speak like this of the simulated bombing of the same downtown where I go to school and hang out with friends, but just to witness a city bombing run again I started a career in Bergen in January '45 with the Grey Wolves mod installed, knowing I was in for a flight of B-24s. It was in the dead of night, and wintertime made for an extra dark setting.
As they approached, I decided I'd hit '.' to have the camera track one of the bombers. It made for perhaps the most spectacular experience I've had with Silent Hunter III ever. First, there was just the drone of aircraft engines and the hard-to-make out hulls of the plane I focused on and his wingmen. Then, I could make out trees below and eventually, up ahead, two light-houses and a pair of plumes of self-illuminated smoke (...don't ask). Then the yellow lights off the city came into view... And then all Hell broke loose. Suddenly there were plumes of search-lights below and thunderclaps from the German flak. Without warning, suddenly the underside of the plane I track glows bright, lit up by the search-lights of a ship below. Then, lines of bomb explosions in water and scattered explosions as the anchored ships go up in flames. As the flight leaves the city behind, not only do the lights of the many buildings light up the night - there's also the fires and explosions from the burning vessels (and the fire in one of the bombers' tail section. Get the extinguisher, your pistol, and your parachute, Doyle). In summary: The plane getting lit up, the sight of the little city below, the burning ships, the burning plane - the only things that put a dampener on the experience were the lag and the fact that it was, after all, my hometown getting blasted to shreds. Give it a try ![]()

Yeah I know, the air raids can be quite something. I once snuck into this British port (I think it was Bristol), sunk a few merchants, and on my way out, these DDs started giving me trouble, thankfully, a whole flight of about 10 Fw200s came to my aids, and proceeded to bomb the crap out of all the DDs, as well as the port.

Eerie indeed S-K. It even gave me goosebumps. Aren't you glad you it's only a sim and you live in today's world.

This is where we draw the line between simulation and real life.
Never in my life did I think I'd ever be happy to Mussolini's air force, until I called in a contact report while sailing off the coast of Malta in the Med. It was freaking glorious. ![]() |

I have yet to witness an air-raid first hand. The closest I've come was returning to Wilhelmshaven after a patrol. I was still out in the Jade when I thought I saw a flash of light in the distance. As I rounded the point and headed for the harbor I began to see smoke columns rising. Then I saw the sunken and burning ships, and the dockside fires. I never got close enough to see the planes though.
Here is the report I wrote at the time: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/show...7s+Patrol+Logs See posts #21 and #22.

I tried to make a FRAPS video, but it lagged way too much even with this machine's 1 GB of RAM, and ended up pretty lacking as a result. So nope. Quote:
As for having to download super-mods: There is a mod you can download called Air Power-something that adds more planes and strategic bombing of ports, so Grey Wolves or any other big modification is not neccessary.

I'm running SHIII plain with individual mods added.... no Air Power or Super mods tho. Just before I lost my last career due to stupidity on my part, I did see Allied bombers bombing St. Nazaire. If I remember right it was after being transfered out of Lorient in late 1943 or early 1944.
S-K do you have a link to this Air Power mod. I've never seen or read about it before. Thanks.

Search the forums, it'll be here someplace. Or check subsim's download page. I think it's simply called the Air Power mod. Quote:
![]() OK, I'll try to take some screenshots. Hang on.

The Airpower mod is available at Terrapin's site, and Harbour Traffic 1.47 is where the air raids originally come from. GW has an improved version-HT 1.48. It is possible to use just the campaign files from GW to get HT if you use the stock version.
For Airpower you'll need to download it, or figure out every single file you'd need to steal from GW.
