Default UHMMMM is this little to far for a VII type?

Mission 5....

Grid DH77, hmmm never had that far mission for a VII type...
Well i will take a tourism route AN14 than all the way south....
Will take a pitstop in Portugal(i saw BESEL(BLUE), is that a habor to refuell and reload torps?

Because AN14 is pretty growded place full of merchants...

Let me know if someone finish it that mission, hopefully on the way back i can port it in Brest(would be nice) if not, than all the way to AN14 heading wilhelmshaven....

too far? i,m 1942 in an VIIC
All of the sudden the BDU send me too grid AC79, the same grid as the harbour of Norfolk USA coast....
I,m like what the hell? thats too far!

is this normal in SH3 when USA comes into war that the BDU sends you to the coast of USA till the end of the war ? or does the BDU comes to their minds and send me somewhere my VIIC can take...

Default The idea with long patrols

First go to patrol grid and take the oredered 24h there, then if fuel (or torpedos also) are empty find nearest milkcow or resupply ship. These are seen in the map as blue text telling the name of the boat or ship.

If not any is shown, then open the list of resupply ships (pressing F1 and look there for resupply) there are dates which they stay in those given grids and wait or drive there for them and the given day they will come to that grid.

After resupply your boat the original patrol orders are null. So then it is just happy hunting and do what you want. So no bonus points are not coming like they come making ordered patrols.

I was wondering those things myself!
One time i got the order to go from Willemshaven to the far west coast of ireland....with my little Type IIA

Well one thing for sure the BdU is nuts! And i just transfered from Kiel to Willemshave so i dont have to sail around Alborg to reach the PQ AN.

Well didn't made it! A DD found me and DC'd the **** outta me!
I sunk to 60m and somehow managed to survive and lipm back home!

A patrol with a iX C in '44 to Capetown (one of the bottom right GR grids) was the longest journey so far. With the many planes it was tideous, running on batteries, snorkeling to recharge and so on. I can tell you that Capetown is swarming with planes and DDs. Got damaged several times so I broke off and headed home. SE off Freetown, while repairing my foredeck and snorkel (again, doh), 2 planes surprised me and sent me to bottom...

For those long runs what I do is submerge during the day to save fuel, and run at 9kts at night. Just remember to finish your patrol before resupplying otherwise you lose credit for the patrol since after resupply you're on a new patrol. Though I believe you can use SH3 Patrol to fix that.

It wasn't uncommon for VII's to do long patrols such as this, Freetown, South Africa, etc.

Might not have been preferable, but it wasn't unheard of.

Also of course, at times, Hitler micromanaged even the u-boats, wanting them sent places Donitz et al didn't approve of.

So, just consider such orders one of those times

Believe it or not, these distant grids were where Type IX shined and why they have the highest average tonnage per boat. These areas (in game as in reality) are comparatively scarce on patrol activity, especially in early war; and are full of unescorted traffic. The most successful historical WWII U-boat patrol (of almost 90,000t) was off Capetown! And most of my best were out in the distant seas, too.

[edit] crap, you mentioned Type VII

That said, it WAS preferable. Topp and other VII captains were known to overload their boats with supplies just to get to the American coast and others.

Trust me, a real U-boat captain would always prefer a patrol in the middle of nowhere which he has a fair chance of surviving, than one in an area full of merchant ships where he'll die :P

Default I am not worry about.....

I am not worry about to reach the DH77, but it was to early(what i think) to goto portugal and find a milkcow or a german merchant to refuel or load new torps for me...

it's just surprice that a mission came with DH77...
I thought " UUUHMMM WTF"??? look on the map, and said "damn thats a loooonnggg ride from Wilhelmshaven, but i can try"...
And i red in other forums that the brittish channel is a death-trap, so i avoid that, so i have to take a tourism route like AN14 and all around Ireland heading to the grid DH77

But even i should ignore the baby-ships(sanked twice) in mission 5, the torps slinks fast...

And i thought, Dont worry about, you have torps left. but when i saw 3 fat-ships like 7600, i wouldn't ignore those ships, i go after them...
and sunk a pain in the ass escort that heading toward me, and have no choice to torp him, or he start dropping depth-charges on me...

As i said in previous message, i hit the escort in the ass(so he lost a propeller) and i have 1 torp left to "FINISH HIM", man that boat was wasted....

hopefully the next mission(6) i can call a milkcow, i still not figure it out under (F1)..
and hopefully i can goto Brest to end the mission....

Time will tell
