PLaying the GW mod and having a blast but am experience 2 types of difficulty and was hoping someone might be able to assist.
1. I'm in 1941 and cannot for the life of me sink (with a torp) a destroyer. Even if I wait till they get to the minimum effect distance of 300m, they still have time to turn and weave out of the way. HOwever I can sink them (and am quite good at it ![]() 2. I came across a hospital ship and troop transport just off the english channel (about 30K to the west of it) but didnt realise they were neutral until they sunk leaving 2 green sunk icons on the map instead of red ones. How can you tell if a ship is neutral and even more surprisingly why did my renown shoot up by 6000??!!! (I thought it would be zero or slightly negative). 3. Is it just me or does it take a lot more torps to sink ships in the GW mod than it did previously (unmodded). If I can sink just a regular cargo ship with 3 torps thats a good effort. Or perhaps I am doing something wrong. Any tips?

Well no. 1 The escorts\DD will zigzag on approach to you not just throw themselves at your torps Try to get an angle shot not bow on and sometimes you have to fire a spread to kill the suckers No.2 Check the flags they are flying to determine their status Up in the top left corner in the periscope and uzo view is a draggable flag sheet which has the dates the countries enter the war Hospital ships are always out of bounds anyway Dont understand why your renown went up - you should have got -10,000 for the hospital ship alone - maybe the entry in the cfg is wrong No.3 GW1.1 incorporates the NYGM damage model where ships are designed to sink by flooding rather than explosions Try to aim for different compartments so more areas will flood quicker And dont be in a hurry to fire more -if you are in a position to wait then wait a little to let flooding take over Hope that helps some |

Thanks. That explains a few things. Just on your commetn about firing at diff compartments, how do you do that. I thought you had to lock on to the target in which case the perescope crosshair s always aimed at the middle. Or should I not lock on and manualyl hold the cross hair at a ship's front / back etc in order to get the torp to hit there. Btw I have waited ages sometimes for stationary ships to sink. In some cases they are on their sides but thats as far as they go. I have to fire one or two more torps to get them to finally sink

If you un-lock the periscope ,you can , well "aim " with it .But you have to take into consideration the ship's speed and bearing. If you have it's correct speed set up in the TDC ,you can just aim for any part of the ship and the torpedo should hit.
If you don't,you have to "lead" your target a bit (aim ahead of it ) .

Those big ships seem to take two to three torps if hitting them from side. But if you want to hit them seriously aim with a magneto torp 0,5 meters under their middlepart.
Most of these hits blow up the ship in one strike. And if not blow up, then the massive water flooding from bottom makes the ship go down quite fast within reasonable amount of time. (1/2 hour to 1 hour) I now play in the end of 1944 and have homing torpedoes. Oh boy life is so easy now ! Just aim somewhere (anywhere) with your periscope and of it goes. The homing torpedo finds its prey and dont miss anytime. |

1: Your in '41 so I guess you are still using the T1 torpedo's (steam)
as you know they leave an trail of bubbles on the surface so when firing those at DD's or BB's will not work they spot that trail and speed up to evade them. I always carry some TII's Torpedo's I always use those on DD's or BB's 2: ![]() 3: Aim for the weakspots they are easy to find.

Ive had similar experiences those damn DD's can see the steamwake in the darkest of nights.
I was wondering if using electrics would help increase my odds. Anyone have solid experience confirming my suspicions ? |
