Silent Victory is more or less the Bible for any info concerning WWII US sub ops.

SINK 'EM ALL by Charles A. Lockwood and PIG BOATS (previously published as 'United States Submarine Operations in World War II') by Theodore Roscoe are also very good.

That book is actually an abridgement of the latter title. Even though "United States Submarine Operations in WW2" was written in the late 1940s and lacks info on the intelligence breakthroughs (Ultra, etc), it is still a very exciting and informative read. Highly, highly recommended!

To learn and to get fired up, I recommend:

Wahoo
Clear the Bridge
Bowfin
War in the Boats
Thunder Below

That should keep you busy for a couple weeks!

To get fired up, I'd throw in Red Scorpion by Peter Sasgen. It's a fictionalized account of the Rasher's patrols by the son of someone who served on the Rasher on every patrol. While it is fictionalized, it is based on the actual war patrols, interviews, and reports. It gives you a great sense of being there.

May I also recommend

Batfish
Silversides
War Fish (By George Grider who served on the Wahoo with Mush Morton and Dick O'Kane. Finally becoming the Captain of the USS Flasher)
and
U.S. Submarines in World War II - An Illustrated History (I picked it up at the Submarine Museum in Groton last year. Has excellent photos and information on the submarine war from 1941 through 1945)

Happy Hunting
