CAOD XP memory fix

As many of you know CAOD will crash if you have a Gig of ram on XP.The program can't read that much memory and drops out when you load a mission. Here is a gem that will allow you to run CAOD [and Longbow 2 ] on such systems. Go to http://www.speichts.com/games/lb2/ram.html and download the memory allocation tool at the bottom of the page. It lets you ajust your system memory through a simple interface.After you tweak the slider you click the box to allocate the ajusted setting to your memory I keep mine around 395 for Caod. You keep it running while you play the game and I havn't noticed any problems using it. Be sure to run Caod in Windows 95 compatability mode with 256 colors checked. Good Hunting!

Very interesting. I am running AOD [DOS] under DOSBox, but also have a copy of CAOD and saw exactly the problem which you described with memory. Thus, it would only run on my laptop and not my desktop.

If I recall, there was also a problem with no sound for CAOD unless you had integrated motherboard sound. Are you able to get sound when playing CAOD under XP? Thanks.

No problem with the audio.Sometimes the engine sound will cut out. but that a known glitch that happens to everyone running the game on todays faster computers. AOD with Dos-Box sounds smoother than Caod on my machine.I've never run the game with an external sound card so I can't comment on that one.It's the first time I've heard about that problem. allways amazes me that buying a sound card actually causes more problems than it solves...i have never bought one and use the integrated one that comes with the PC....now i know folks say or it is implied that a sound card is a nice bit of kit to have but other than the sharing of the processor load thru the card i can't think of any advantages to having one..given the issues that allways seem to come up with any number of games when using a sound card...i have nver had ANY sound issues at all ever not with games not with any other application ever with the on board sound system..and it sounds fine when playing music etc...better than my very expensive hifi equipment in fact...

In my experience, CAOD can be played on a system with XP and 1 gig RAM, if your total available memory (which is RAM+swap) is less than 2 gigs. Still, using an emulator and running it on an older OS inside that emulator may be preferable (also because the emulator is likely to be slower, which removes some control problems that might occur on fast PC's, like not being able to make small corrections.
