What happened here?
Just started on my 53rd patrol, 6/2/44, just passing east of Île d' Groix, south of Lorient, at TC 1024, when suddenly it drops to TC 1, and my crew are screaming "We're taking damage!" "Heavy flooding!" and "Men down on the deck!" I frantically switch to the crew screen and am greeted by this:
![]() I have no idea what happened. The water wasn't that shallow-about the same depth as the harbor-I neither saw nor heard an explosion, there were no enemies nearby, and even my heavy flak gun was twisted and ruined. Is this a common SH3 bug or did I just hit something and not know it? Running GW. -Qairyl |

3 things come to mind....
You ran into another ship or sub. You hit a mine. Or you ran into a subnet. Running at 1024 will do that when you're that close to base. Slow down, you'll live longer. ![]()

Would there be a loud bang if I hit a mine? I know it wasn't a ship, since I checked external view and there was nothing there, and the water below me was clear.
Where can I find those charts? -Qairyl |

No bang if at 1024 tc--had the same thing happen to me. look around underwater and you should be able to see a sub net or mines (spaced apart tied to chains).
If using GW you can pull down a map of the friendly ports minefields and subnets in your F5 navigation map screen.---for enemy ports- SH3 generator can show them---theres also a way to see them in the mission editor i believe but i don't know how.

He said he is running GW. 1944, I would suspect a air attack.

If it was a mine why would the crewmen on deck be killed? Wouldn't being high and out of the water actually protect you?

1944 - Lorient, Surfaced, High TC, its a given he just got Bombed, more so when the damage is centered around the area of the sub OUT of the water, Sail, Forward Deck, All Bridge crew killed, flack mangeled. 1944 - Lorient, Surfaced, High TC, just begging to be bombed.

No matter if it was any of the above, don't run TC any higher than 32 when near your base. I take back using TC of 64. You never know when a ship or plane is near if you run a high TC. So much is happening that the important actions usually get overlooked by the sim and you could end up dead.
If you're using SHIII Commander go to SHIII Options/TC and set "When ships detected" to 1. Same for "When enenemy plane detected". It will save yer bacon too when at sea. Not sure if 2.6 has this as I'm still using 2.5.

I would have to say probably an air attack as a mine always seems to kill off the radio room crew. Best advice from others is to use low time compression.

Hallelujah! This happened to me just last night...twice. Admittedly, I'm only playing in '42 right now, but I left Lorient and sailed out of the base into the inlet, turned west towards open sea (passing between the island and the mainland). Bam...same kind of message...then I died. I was using TC 32 at the time (and for those of you following along here, I am also using SH Commander 2.6, which is every bit as cool as 2.5 and I had adjusted some of my TC settings as suggested by some of your comments listed here...ships sighted/plane sighted set to TC 1). So, naturally, since this was a brand new career, and I died less than 5 miles from the docks, I start over wondering what the heck just happened. I kind of assumed I had had a collision with another vessel. So, I start over, and this time sail in TC upstairs...kind of keeping my own eyes peeled so to speak. Again, I here cries of damage and flooding and man down on deck. This time, it is apprent I have somehow run onto something. Quick check from external view, and sure enough, I'm sitting on top of an antisub net stretched across this piece of waterway! I can't wait to get home and look for the feature you mentioned on the map. I kept thinking there must be some way for me to know where my own defenses for my friendly harbor are laid. Seems stupid to kill our own guys, after all.

I finally realized where the pulldowns were; upon further inspection, it was definitely a mine. I blundered right dead-center into a friendly minefield

Totally agree with GT182..Don't go over TC32 when you are approaching a Port (especially Lorient) or you are asking for trouble. It's a 'how patient am I situation' and the what Medals and Renown I'm gonna get you should put aside until you hear the Band.

Thanks for the insight. Checked out those cool dragdown maps and sure enough, I was sailing right smack dab into the harbor defensive nets. Can't believe I'd gotten out of other harbors without doing the same thing. Dumb luck.
