Hey there!

I believe you have to select the target through your scope or UZO.

Then you should get the range.

Hope this helps

I hope somebody explains what to do because I have the same problem. The icons for getting the sonar range never "un-grey" even if I have a target in the scope or UZO. Keeping my eye on this thread!

well ive had it work before. but that was a while ago. from what i know you need to be:

a) submerged to use the sonar
b) have a target you are aiming at with your scope or uzo.

while under water it should not be greeyed out unless you dont havtually have a sonar equiped.

regardless i personally still cant get it to tell me the range laterly dunno why

If You have a sonar equipement it will work. With hidrofones it will not.

Go to SilentHunterIII/data/config/commands_en and assign a keyboard command to Range to Target (not sure how it is listed) then this will work whenever the little notepad in the sonar shack says "merchant","warship" or "unknown". If you assign a key to Hydrophone Volume while you are in there, you can hear what the sonarman hears from anywhere in the boat. Backup file first.

all you have to do is hit h for the hydrophone station and then manually move the arrow to the contact and then hit the sonar button on the sonar man station icon.

I have found that you have to have a contact on the notepad at the hydrophone station in order to use the sonar. The really annoying thing about this is that the notpad will often not 'show' a contact until the range is within a few kilometers. I don't know what the effective range of the sonar is, but I do know that it is at times frustrating to manually get a contact using the hydrophone and then not be able to range it until the notepad decides to trigger and accept it as real. Guess we'll have to wait for SHV!

Once you can buy the sonar

You use it like this manually like some say or have your sonar guy follow the warship or closest target once he is targeted on to the sound now you can have him ping it then get the distance has nothing to do with the scopes you can do this from deep water to find exact distance and choose when to go to scope depth and you can also use it at scope depth but the sonar guy has to be locked on to what ever boat you choose. So you click the sonarman then you click hydrophone then you click follow nearest sound merchant or warship then that is what targets the boat for using the sonar after he is locked on the sound you click the sonar button under the sonarman and tell him to ping for either distance est. or exact distance and he will then tell you.Hope this helps took me awhile to figure that out I kept getting the no target selected no matter what I did until trying the follow sound thing. Thats gotta be it but why you have to manually do the first ping is beyond me I don't believe it is supposed to work that way but here's what happened after the sonarman finally called the ship a merchant I pressed H went to the degree he last called then on that notepad it had merchant so I pressed the Sende button beside the big wheel got the distance then I asked him to do it and he can do it on his own now there must be a bug but in any case there you have it now you should be able to ping distance now as well.

PS I had it working like this a little while ago but know it seems untill I use the hydrophone manually and then hit the sende button the sonarman won't ping it anymore on his own I am playing version 1.4 I think that it is bugged and needs an update or something if anyone knows a fix please let me know unless it has to do with perhaps the identity of the boat sometimes like the boat I have in sound range right now the hydrophone isn't letting me give it a type and the sonarman isn't giving the sound a type either so perhaps you can only sonar when the sonarman has a sound lock and also has identified it.

Thanks For the welcome
I Think there is a bug when the sonarman finally starting calling the sound by name like merchant at 005 degrees I asked him to ping distance got the no target selected again so I pressed H turned the wheel to 005 then hit the sende button the ping then worked I then asked the soanrman to ping and he did so for some reason you have to manually ping the target first before he will do it I think it is a bug but this should help others learn to ping using the sonar and hydrophone.
