If you were a navy engineer, and needed to design a CM for use on submarines... wouldn't it make sense to equip the CM with a small warhead, so that whenever the torp reached the CM, the CM would explode and damage the torpedo?
It seems like such a straightforward and simple idea. A heck of alot simpler than the anti-torpedo torpedo systems that are being developed right now...:hmm: ... http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pitt.../s_291277.html http://www.navyleague.org/sea_power/jun06-69.php The CM wouldn't need a propulsion or guidance system because the torp comes to it. All that would be needed is a proximetry detector of some sort to trigger the blast and walla, anti-torp system. ...Hmm...maybe SCS was on to something with the "torps detonating on countermeasure" gameplay. Perhaps there are systems like that already in production? Opinions?

How would you make sure the torpedo approached it? Acoustic Blip enhancers, maybe?
Considering the size of them, there are limits to what you can put into them, too. I think what some suppose they contain today is one of the best options: something that changes the water to not transmit sound, by bubbles or by some other chemical reaction. If the effect spreads wide enough, the torpedo becomes blind.

I think the problem with that is you assume that the torp is going to come to the decoy, which may not be so with today's weapons.

What I was thinking is that the CM would be exactly like a normal CM with whatever method the active and passive CM use, but with the addition of adding a proximetry fuse and 10kilogram warhead attached to the regular CM.
Yes I assume that the torpedo flys close to the CM. Seems reasonable, because if the CM successfully decoy's the torp, then the torp would home in on the CM just as desired. I'm assuming the torp gets pretty close though, close enough to be detected by the proximetry fuse and affected by the blast of the warhead. That way a evading sub can eliminate the pursuing torp with the decoy preventing it from reattacking. Seems a heck of alot simpler than the current anti-torpedo torpedo project the Penn State University is developing by equipping a propulsion unit, guidance system, advanced sensors and warhead all withing a small 6.75 inch 9 foot casing. There's got to have been some engineering effort out there that has tried it because its too simple an idea for some Navy not to have attempted...:hmm:
