Default Getting under merchant in convoy..

How do you get under a wounded merchant when attacking a convoy without external view--I've heard that's how you avoid getting dc'd and people say to do that, but how?!! using hydrophones? how do you know when you are under and how to stay under the merchant?

I imagine its all about guess work. Firstly you'd need to know the speed of the merchant so that when you're under it you can stay there. Secondly you would likely want to use hydrophones to move in behind it. Its pretty easy I imagine when you get really close to hear the props. Its all about experimenting.

just make sure you at least some depth between you and the keel of the merchant... I once tapped a crippeled merchant in the tail and she capsized and destroyed my boat...:rotfl:

Becarefull when sitting under a merchant..you never quite know when she will blow, and if it's a large cargo or tanker when she blows and you're under her she'll take you with her. Excuse the double entendre's

That is what I find works best for me in attacking convoy's I try to take down there propeller with first 4 torps then when they are stationery get under one of them and wait till escort's move out to the convoy ,reload and then I take them down one by one.(usually it's 2 ships never had a luck to damage all four ships enough to stop) trick is even the ship is stationery it will still drift a bit so time to time you have to move slow ahead

I like my damaged ships to sit below me

:rotfl: :rotfl:

Bit close for comfort that one - hit him with a bow shot as he rushed me - range was about 950 at impact but he kept running as he went down

While maneuvering under the water use observation periscope to look around it works most of the time if the water visibility is good. Also it can help you with avoiding the DD's when they charge you.

That’s what I do to get under the wounded ship and remember to be at lest 20m of depth to avoid of being rammed by escort.

use your hydrophone and just make sure you are roughly under the merchent...no need to be exactly under her. Destroyers leave a little safe distance between themselves and the merchant. As stated above, beware of drift...the merchant will drift at various speeds depending on sea state...I almost lost a boat because of this!

Doesnt always work late war tho
On my only foray into 1945 I sat beneath a crippled Tanker to escape the DD
Well they knew I was there and depthcharged me anyway - causing the tanker to blow and sink
No renown for me but a whole world of hurt
One patrol in 45 and RIP

Use the method torpcatcher posted to get under her

ok cool i'll try the obs scope. I was curious how real u-boats did this during the war (if it was done at all?..) and if a historical method could be pursued in the game. But now that I know you can use the scope underwater beyond PD there is no way I am not going to try it.
