what year did the merchants ships start carrying guns and do they carry guns in the GW mod?...which is what im using at the min.

Cant remember what year they carry them - a look thru the museum will tell you - but yes they do carry them in GW
My dead crew members can confirm this

Single ship contacts and Mini convoy's become armed in late 1941, the main convoys become armed early 42.

In game, they start showing up in early 1940, when using NYGM 2.0 anyway.
