Default Guilty pleasure...torpedoing small craft :)

OK, not realistic, not sporting, wasteful...whatever. I am on my 7th patrol since getting SHIII and on the way home from Kiel I came across a fishing boat. I had two torpedos left in the stern and the weather was too rough for the deck gun (my usual way of dispatching them...if I bother to hunt them at all). On a whim I decide to attempt to torpedo it...just as sort of a challenge. I figured that it would be pretty hard since the weather was so rough its keel was pretty much out of the water at times...well and it is small. I set the torpedo to 1m of depth, impact and fast. lined up, had my weapons officer plot a solution and sent the torp on its way. What fun!! the torpedo impacted and the boat flew into the air spinning! I found this pretty hysterical....so I have done it again on occasion and each time it has been dramatically different...sometimes rolling under two or three times before going under, sometimes being blown in the air, sometimes disappearing completely other than leaving some flotsam.

I have had to ween myself from this guilty pleasure, especially since the last time I did this, I did it right when setting out for a long distance patrol and I wasted two bow torpedos on the boat...both missing...I sorely missed those torpedos (I did end up reporting the contact and the luftwaffe were swarming him as he left my range). It is also rather unrealistic and does effect the immersion I am generally attempting to achieve.

I am not advocating this behavior...but if you have not done it...maybe just once...

Hehe, I have done that but mostly in single missions not in campaign, and I got same kind of results. It looks like damage model doesn't work well for small ships. I remember on time I hit a Elco with torpedo, she immediately sunk, hit the bottom (we were at shallow waters) and surfaced like an cruise missile, before finally sinking a couple of hundred meters or so from her original position. Priceless!

I used to delight in sinking sampans (junks) in SHI, but only with the deck gun. At 20-50 tons and made of wood they were hard targets with a torpedo. I rammed one once, for fun, and met with a hardcoded no-ramming feature: he was unharmed, my 1200-ton submarine sank like a stone.

Omg - sounds amazing. Reminds me of the time I rammed/rolled over an armed trawler. Like an easter egg in the physics engine. But the fishing boat/Elco thing sounds wicked. I always wondered if she would even detonate. Anybody tried a mag pistol on those boats?! If only I could spare a torpedo!

A bit of a waste of a torpedo but to see those boats go flying in the air, i can understand why you would. Ive only sunk a few with the deck gun

I will not hesitate in the slightest to use a torpedo on an armed trawler......

Hey, if its got guns I agree completely. I am not going to duke it out with my deck gun with any vessel having larger than a 20mm armament...unless I have to...if it is armed it gets a torpedo.

I did once, set the torpedo to 3m. It was rough weather...I am lucky it even made it to the target. When it went off, the explosion completely shrouded the fishing boat and when it dissapated there was just flotsam left and maybe a tiny bit of the tale going under (could not tell if it was flotsam or not). Granted, the torpedo was set to magnetic....but I am not sure if it was the magnetic pistol that detonated it or if it was due to impact. It was hard to tell even when watching it, the sees were very rough and the fishing boat one second was keel out of the water and the next, decks awash.

Displaying fiendish delight in blowing up innocent fishers is no cause for concern, it is war after all.

I use to run like hell from the PT boats when I first started playing until once I messed up my dive and decided to shoot it out. The flak guns and/or cannons do a nice job but a good hit with the eighty-eight remains the best. Never imagined how much fun I had been missing. Fun yes, but efficient... no. There are three targets that should attract your missiles young Kaleun, tankers, tankers and tankers. Flying fishing boats may be a nice distraction from long, lonely patrols, but they don't buy equipment upgrades and new boats. Also the armament department wishes me to remind you that eels are 25,000 Marks a piece.

No wonder the Germans lost the war. They wasted all their 25,000 RM torpedoes on lifeboats! :rotfl:

But people want to believe this stuff. The british have always been quite creative with running down their opponents (especialy the germans). And they still are. Back then it was the war propaganda, today it's the tabloids.
But hey, we can cope with that, so no hard feelings

If you want to "starve" Britain, then there's nothing better then sinking a trawler. You know how many tons of fish Billingsgate Market gets every day? Sinking a trawler full of food or a cargo ship full of plastic cups? :hmm:
