Soccer Songs
Seeing the World Cup Section of the iTunes Essentials inspired me to make everyone post their favorite soccer or "football" songs.
I personally enjoy many songs from the FIFA 2005 Soundtrack but mostly: Beautiful Goal : Paul Oakenfold Even though they are not soccer songs... Sorcerary : Future Funk Squad Brooklyn is Burning : Head Automatica Augen Auf! : Oomph! These songs always get me ready and pumped for my soccer games or help for just getting me in a soccer mood. Post your own favorites! ![]() |

Herbert Grönemeyer, Buchheim's alter ego Leutnant Werner in the movie "Das Boot" has written a homage to his hometown "Bochum". This song is traditionally sung here in the stadium before games of the football club "Vfl Bochum 1848" and it always gives me a shiver.
Bochum is part of the "Ruhrpott", the industrial heart of Germany along the Ruhr river, that has more people than e.g. New York in comparison. The first football teams here were founded by coal mine workers who in their rare free time grabbed the ball to do some physical exercises in the fresh air. This connection to the age of coal and steel may explain why people here associate football more with work than with art. However, on Saturday's the whole region is breathing football and everything else comes to a halt. The colours of the local club are flying everywhere and the neighbour town, the football rival, is declared a "forbidden town". Even the poodles wear football shirts on Saturdays and it is not unusual when newborn babies get registered for the football club first, and then, when this is done, the baby gets baptised. Here is an English translation ot the song: "Deep in the West, where the sun is dusty, it is much better than one thinks deep in the West, deep in the West You are no beauty all gray from work you love yourself without makeup you're an honest sort unfortunately totally congested but that's just what makes you You have a pulse of steel one hears it (beating) loudly in the night you're simply too modest your mine gold has lifted us up again you flower in the coal fields Bochum I come from you Bochum I'm fond of you "Good luck", Bochum ("Glück auf", German miners greeting) You're no metropolis on your Königsallee there are no fashion shows (as in Düsseldorf) here, where the heart still counts not big money, who wants to live in Düsseldorf Bochum... You are a home for pigeons and constantly on coke your summerhouse is an allotment garden with your one-two pass you make every opponent all wet you and your VFL (Bochum 1848) Bochum...."
