Allied flak guns ...

Do they actually work? I mean if a Luftwaffe plane attacks a ship and if the ship is equipped with AA guns, will they fire? I've seen quite a few Luftwaffe planes attack solo merchant ships, but never seen an AA gun fire.

Those ships probably don't have AA guns. With the Harbour Traffic mod you can get really lucky and see an Allied air raid on your own base, and the sky lights up with friendly AA.

Uhh yes they do, there is a stock Malta mission where you attack a convoy covered by a Nelson as well as a couple of Dido class cruisers and some fleet DDs...the Italians send some bombers to attack and you can see (sorry I like external view especially for this sort of occasion in single missions) the AA knock down....well almost every plane.

He said solo merchant ships. I was referring to those. All warships carry AA guns, some more than others.

Mind you I've seen some Liberty ships with AA guns...as well as deck guns.

Was sneaking away from a destroyer once (cant remember which) when a friendly FW-190 (?) came to the rescue and buzzed it, trying to get a clear bombing run on it. I cheered it on for a while, but the dd opened up with flak and after a few passes took it down.

Took the heat off me though, so I quitely thanked the Luftwaffe and slunk away.

So, yes, they will shoot AA.
