Default What am I doing wrong?

1939. Grey Wolves supermod. OK, so I've heard what most of you do in 1939 is destroy ships while surfaced. I seem incapable of this... My problem is, one of three things happen:

1. I attempt to gun it down and either my efforts are fruitless or I've wasted 100+ rounds when it would be much easier to fire a torpedo.

2. I fire a T1 torpedo and the merchant dodges it.

3. I fire a T2 torpedo and the merchant starts zigging.

Please assist... there must be something I'm missing. Oh, yes, and I very much prefer T2 torpedoes to T1. It's just my personal preference, but I hate hate hate the bubbles on the surface from the T1 unless it's nighttime, in which case I prefer T1 to T2, but most merchants I find I find in the daylight.

Ill be quick cuz i gotta hit the sack: stalk by day and attack by night as much as you can and always have the moon in your back. Carry out first attacks with electric torps as much as possible. Do NOT engage surface ships with your deck gun (should only be used to finish off sinking ships). Dont get too close or your peri will be spotted.

Seach, stalk, destroy, retreat, seach, stalk, destroy, retreat...

G'night!

Well spork542, GreyOctober, pretty much nailed it. I can add very little other than if you spot 'em in daylight, keep away from him stay out beyond 6600m. Try to plot his course, then overhaul him, outflank him, do an end-round...get out ahead of this track and lay an ambush.

Once you learn his course 'n speed, he's yours. You can plot all of this on the F5 screen, then follow your attack plan at night. However, if you remain unseen, (he's not zigzagging), just get out ahead of him and make a perpendicular daylight submerged attack.

Good hunt.

If your gonna use the deck gun ( comes in handy if your out of fish ) try to get at least 1500 meters or less .. use the UZO or periscope to get the correct range then man the deck gun your self and raise the gun to the range you saw in the UZO or ask your sona man what the range is .... you will get better hits with the gun than your deck gun crew will.....

Go for the waterline only. This is a limitation of the NYGM Damage model v1, which GW uses. As for torpedos, try the fast setting on T1s. It's the top right switch on the torpedo screen.

Sorry for that late post. Thanks for the information. On a side note, how do I get the hull hit spot location thingy to appear in the Recognition Manual? I've had it pop up several times by accident but don't know how.

You need to be closer than 1000m to the target and AOB close to 90 deg.

Is that it? I mean will it all the sudden appear in the recognition manual?

Hitting Q before you launch a Torp is a big thing! But sometimes you have bad Torps, duds..

Yes. You can then also click the zones and the TDC automatically sets the correct torpedo running depth.

Thanks! I'll try that next time... I can have U-516 try that against something in heavy fog. That is, if I don't run out of fuel first.
