Default SH3 & Starforce. Yay or Nay?

I've played AOD, SH1 & 2 in the past>

I've recently bought a new (but not top of the range) PC. I really like the look of SH3 but I'm concerned about the problems Starforce might cause.

What are the chances Starforce will cause me problems (bit of a wild question I know) and are they and specific things Starforce will no get along with (Hardware or Software)?

Regards

Thanks for the welcome. I've done a forum search under "starforce" but everything seems to be about all the problems it causes.

I'm wondering are these problems rare or common with SH3?

I have 2 PCs and SF messed with one but not the other.
I do not have DVD burners which is where the majority of the problems are. If you get a no CD you can install SH3 but then not run the game. Install the files needed for No-CD then without the DVD in the PC start the game.
I really do not believe NoCDs hurt games like SH3 because we need to reinstall so often from adding mods and screwing things up. I can see how doing CoD one might not need the CD again but even though I use a No-CD I would never let my DVD out of my sight.
I assume you have legally bought SHIII as we insist anyone here support the devs but do what ever it takes to lay waste to the evil SF.
UBI has dropped SF from future games proving there is a God!!!

All versions have SF I think. I wouldn't count on it not being included.

Submariners take risks everytime they leave port for a patrol, therefore SF shouldn't be your real worry.

Ive had a few weird things happening to my DVD drive, for instance sometimes she just refuses to work so i automatically blame SF, a restart fixes this. Yet ive really had no serious problems so i would say playing SH3 is worth the risk.

I suggest a look at the SimHQ Silent Hunter III forum for a discussion of this. SimHQ is currently (08:00 GMT 20/05/2006) offline for a few hours for maintenance. Once it is back up then you may find some useful posts there.

I dont kno wut the big deal is.. I never had any problems with starforce or any visible signs of my computer slowing. I mean, its not noticeable alongside the massive amounts of porn i download that slows down comps. But i dunno

Rememebr, you can go to the Starforce web site and get the SF removal tool. Then if you run the game with the DVD and after leaving run the SF removal tool before doing anything else it will not bother other stuff.
It will reinstall SF when you put the DVD back in and run the game.
A No-CD eliminates doing that, though.
It seems like only about 25% had any SF problems of any kind.
But, even if it was 10% that would be 10,000 people for SH3.
If you did not have problems. great!
That, however, does not mean others did not.

I thought seriously about not installing this game because of Starforce. But I did, and it works fine, and it did not mess up my DVD drive.

My best guess from all the posts I've read is that SF negatively affected about 10% of users. Those problems ranged from slightly slower burning times to completely frying the drive.

So installing it is certainly not risk-free, but then it probably won't affect you.

And, in my case, having Silent Hunter was certainly worth the risk.

One year and one month now, and not one problem. I have a DVD burner as well, and it works fine.

StarFarce caused two different graphics cards to burn out, costing me in all over $300, so I don't reccommend it.
