Default Who killed the "cat bump" topic

As you may have noticed, Subsim has been experiencing server issues. We've been unable to pinpoint the problem but occasionally, usually weekdays from 9am to 5pm CST, the forum server "runs out of memory". Cannot explain why, the memory on normal usage has been monitored and is fine, but then once or twice a day it maxes out and I have to perform a reboot to get the server to respond again.

I've gone through a whole list of things, including paying a server management company to investigate. They have been pretty useless in this case, they were unable to do much more than guess. The datacenter is looking into it too; they tested the server RAM and it was good. I've asked them to change out the memory.

One thing I have been told, when a forum topic is called that has a lot of replies, it has to load the whole query into memory… I don't know if that is the problem but as a test, I've removed the massive "Dead Cat/Bump" topic. I'm pretty desperate, but maybe this will help. I have the topic backed up, so perhaps it will be reinstalled at some future date. I am aware there are a few other topics with 500+ replies, but they are more subject-oriented, so we will retain them.

Jesper, send me an e-mail if you can, I have some ideas to bounce off you.

I am looking for volunteer server monitors, a few people who visit the forums regularly who can let me know if it goes down. If you would like to help, PM me. I will give you details how you can help. Gizzmoe and Dargo have been doing most of this for me, I need to get them some help.

thanks for your patience and support,
Neal

I'm thinking the problem was not the massive thread, will be restoring it (not right away, though).

Problem with tracking down problems is you have to try one thing at a time...and wait to see if that does the trick. Takes time.

I didn't meant it that way, but you are forgiven.

What i really meant was: that topic was a real nerve-killer.

Well, if it stays gone I'll miss it; if it comes back I'll post on it again, but the bottom line is you have to do whatever it takes to make it all work.

We're behind ya, Onkel, at least 25%.

Neal,
I was speaking to a Linux mate, about the problem and he ask this:
If restarting the server fixes the memory error Is that a soft restart or a hard shutdown (off) (dont ask me why ) . Sounds like a cache/memory lock type problem, as in, theres a file being acccessed that uses a large amount of memory & it's not releasing that memory back to the system. Could also be a perticuler ram chip being addressed in series, overheating.
