Default Depthsetting torpedoes

I always set my torpedoes on different depth, depending on wich ship I shall sink

The C3-Cargo=10.5 If it is calm sea, if it is about 15m/s I set the depth to about 7.5.

At most I use 2 torp against C2
3 torp against C3

Sometimes I watch the torp go right under the keel of the merch and detonate.

Regards

Markus

Me 2. I've seen a torp actually hit above the waterline, too! :rotfl:

Mags in rough weather are just asking for a pre-detonation. Though in calm seas, it is nice to watch a mag-det sail right under a boat and explode. Even more awesome if there's a lot of secondary explosions. And absolutely top-notch if some other boat in the convoy goes to zig-zag, and manages to turn right into a torpedo that would have otherwise missed it.

It's the little victories I life for...

Default AH, so that's what the 'Pilot' is for

I have been asking around what the 'Pilot' does when the TDC screen is showing. So, the letter "I" means impact. However, would someone please explain for me what both choices do? Thanks, Robert

Default I missed!!!

I am using a VIIB sub u-51, and I had my Pilot set on Magnetic. It was around 4 AM and dark. I had a V&W Destroyer in my sights [attack periscope] distance was about 3600 metres and I fired three torpedoes at it, one at a time and they all missed. I can't figure it out. The angle on the AOB was correct. The depth was set at 3 metres, calm sea, and slow speed. Any comment? Robert.

Firing at a destroyer from 3.6km? With slow speed, no less... chances for failure are rather high...

For Magnetic trigger, you should set the depth of your torpedoes so that they pass 1-3 m below the keel of the target ship.

For Impact trigger, the torpedoes should be aimed so that they strike the side of the target ships' hull...and at an approximately 90° angle to the hull.

For the magnetic trigger, the angle doesn't matter, though firing from the side of the target ship still allows more room for error.

Default 3600metres

There is no problem firing at a ship at that distance if you set the running speed slow! I have sunk destroyers at that distance before, also merchant ships. Um, okay, to the other person who resppnded [sorry, I didn't catch your name before I started writing this] I will set the depth under the keel as you recommend when using Magnetic. Thanks. Now I have a Clemson Destroyer over me and I'm at 25 metres deep. and it's dropping depth charges. Hope I survive..... Robert

I do have to admit, that sometimes I run into one or two C2, that seems to be unsinkable. Why it is so, I don't know.

This hasn't been mentioned but perhaps your torpedoes missed the destroyer because your torpedo tube doors had not been opened "manually" by you prior to firing them. If you simply "lock" the target in your attack persicope and press the fire button there is a delay as your torpedo tube doors have to open first before the torpedo leaves the tube. This delay can, I believe result in your torps missing their target in particular when you are engaging a target over such a long distance. I am no expert at this and I am still learning my trade but in general I try to attack my targets at a distance of 500-1000 metres. But as I suggested perhaps it is the torpedo tube door issue that is resulting in you missing the target. Hope my info is accurate. Experts please feel free to correct me if I am off track here.

So do the experts; you're completely right about that. A shot at any ship, much less a destroyer, at a distance greater than 3000 meters would've been historically rare. I can't remember which ace, I want to say Hardegen, said that he rarely fired a torpedo at greater than 1000 meters. As with combat air aces, the secret to being a good shot seems to have been sneaking up on your target until you were too close to miss. With small, fast vessels like destroyers, there is also a great chance that she will change course by several degrees after you loose your eel, making your slow, long shot a wasted torpedo.

I try to employ what I believe to be real world tactics. Hence I very rarely try engagements over 3000m let alone 2000m. I don't sit on the surface and shoot down 50 aircraft in a single patrol. The fact is, it is so pleasing investing so much time in the "approach" and it makes it all the more rewarding getting in close and getting that good shot where the only chance of failure is with a dud torpedo or a freak wave.

Thanks guys. Come to think of it, I did forget to open the doors manually when I fired and missed. Robert

robj250 opening the doors manually its not a biggest problem hiting and sinking a destroyer, you dont play with manual target solution am i right? Here is my personal tip.

Spot a destroyer, take a aprox.90 degree course to make a good fiiring position (i am sorry my English need improvment)

Now since you dont have to calculate aprox speed of the darget
go to TDC set 2 torpidoes to fire - you may also use 3 if you wish

set the depth to 1 meter - fast speed impact pistol

now set the giro angel between 5 or 6 depends how fast the destoyer travell.

open toobs - and LOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :rotfl:
