Default Am I missing smoke from ship funnels?

I have come back to this game after a very long absense and are trying to get my skills sorted before I start playing with all these great mods that seem to be out there. One thing I have noticed is that ships I view steaming along don't seem to have any smoke coming out of their funnels. Was this always the case? I only say this because I have noticed in screenshots smoke trails. Is this in the vanilla flavour or is it a mod?

If you have a NVidia graphics card, this is normal.

Hello

I have the same problem. Its most likely your video card..I have a Nvidia GForce FX5200.

The trick is to alt-tab or press the microsoft logo key to get out of the game, then it should work, unless you look at the sun or the moon.

Sometimes, you have to pause first, then get out of the game to get smoke to work...

I am probably gonna change video cards soon..then it won't happen.

Ah heck! I was wondering if it might be that. My system is getting on in that I still have a Nvidia Geforce 4400 128mb card with 60.xxx something drivers (can't remember as not at home). I wonder if a driver update would fix this or is it a problem with all Nvidia cards in that a driver update or rollback won't fix? In the meantime I will try tonight the optio n mentioned by mike_espo. Thanks guys for info.

Same problem here... FX5900 and no smoke most of the time. I tried whole bunch of driver versions and... nothing. I had Ati 9550 before and this was never an issue. As HW3 said, this bug is well known and it can be solved only by moving to Ati.

Yep, I haven't found a driver yet that fixes it.

Nvidia FX5700LE here... lots of black smoke too. Its just a matter of finding the right driver.

I use Forceware driver 81.95 and have experienced no major issues.

So there is hope. Excellent. I will try tonight when I get home. Thanks.
