I'm pretty new at this game, but i've played it a few weeks and it's great. now i start thinking of mods. better textures, eye-candy etc.
i read almost all mods at the downloads section here at subsim.com, but many mods also change realism. i don't like that now. i'm not that good now. so i was wondering if you guys could give some tips about which mods to use? i was also wondering which mods are most common, so just post your used mods! |

I see your point at being new but not wanting to go for realism yet, but trust me, the game is a million times better with some of the realism mods in it.
I havent got any graphic mods in particular, but if you download any of the larger mods like the NYGM tonnage war mod, or the Greywolves mod, they are packed with grahics updates. The first thing you should get is jonesoft mod enabler, it makes it very easy to add and remove mods. then SH3 commander, it lets you change alot of things to make things as easy or as difficult as you like. im running the NYGM tonnage war mod, and its brought the game back to life for me. It is probably more than your looking for for your first time out, so just try one of the real uboat mods, theyre a huge improvement on the stock game.

http://www.subsim.com/phpBB/viewtopi...ighlight=witch and copied the list of mods that Sailor Steve has installed. I then went out and searched the various threads and mods and read the read-me files etc. paying particular attention to conflicts etc. I found and D/L'd most of the mods I wanted and then started messing around with installs. Con20or is right on, you must get JSGME. It makes it so easy to install lots of mods. For you I would start with RUB1.45 or GW and read all you can, which it seems you have done already, and start trying them out. I like RUB and SH3 Commander and I'm going to try NYGM-TW as soon as I get back to Keil from my current patrol. One little mod I really enjoy is KptnLt Eric Karle's Interior Life Mod, check it out. Soon you will be a mod-meister Herr Kaleun! |

I would say, besides getting JSGME and SH3 Commander 2.4, try any of the following major mods out, NYGM-TW, Grey Wolves, or IUB1.03. I have tried out all three and liked them all. They each have their own way of doing things but, as in life, no one mod is going to please everyone so, try them out and pick the one you like best. Of the three, I liked Grey Wolves best but, that is me. In reality, I would be happy with any one of them.

There is a nice Navigation map mod that shows convoy routes (like the map that comes with the game) when you zoom out.
SH3 Commander adds fun and allows you to change some things easily. It is the first one to get. Allows you to eliminate fatigue if you want & add medals & qualifications to your crew. These can make it easier if you want. Then you can add emblem mods easily for more choices to decorate your boat. The sensor pack mod & snorkel fix is good. Reduced radius for depth charges is out (haven't installed it yet) Grammophone songs are easy to add and fun. You can edit the ammo in your deck gun too: "Go to the Data/Cfg folder. Click on Basic.cfg. Way down near the bottom of the file, just below 'Coning', which is all the conning tower files, you'll come across the gun files: '10.5cm', '8.8cm' etc. Those two files have the ammo loads for the deck guns. You can change them to anything you want; thousands of shells if you like. The historical loads should read: 10.5cm: AP=0, SS=0, HE=150 8.8cm: AP=0, SS=0, HE=220 (Thanks to Sailor Steve for this one!) Personally i plan on playing SH3 pretty basic until I get bored with it or feel something is wrong. I dont get to play alot so making it more difficult is not really what I want. Fixes rather than mods are my main interest at this point and my computer is old so I don't add anything too hard on it. If you have a fast machine then some of the graphics and skin mods will add to the fun-but I can't say which are best, tho I'm sure others can help. Good Hunting! I'm playing a pretty basic SH3 myself and its fun ![]() |

You say you don't want to change realism right now, yet everyone suggests realism mods to you. I'm with you, I think its a good idea first time through the game to not change realism, play the stock game first, then you will appreciate the realism changes more later, and have a better feel for what you would like changed.
I did that very thing. Start out with the jSGME utility, and SH3 commander, those are necessitites. With Commander mod, you can change the realism settings as much or as little as you want. I second the EMBLEM MODS for your U-Boat. HARBOR TRAFFIC is a good mod. Adds life to your ports and eye candy. TRANSPARENT TORPEDO BACKGROUND SCREEN gives you, well, a transparent torpedo background screen. Allows the torp screen to not be like an eclipse blocking out the action. I use SAILOR STEVE'S SOUNDS mod to spice up the audio effects. MAPPED CONVOYS mod is very handy, adds the convoy routes to your nav map. FULL VULNERABILITY MOD is a cool enhancement to your recognition manual, gives you better intelligence on target vessels, renown for ships, and more. FABC SLIDEOUT mod is very handy, adds a slideout to the interface so you can quickly and easily keep tabs on your fuel, battery, air, etc., rather than going through the chief engineer everytime you need an update. If you're into Das Boot, add the DAS BOOT THEME MUSIC PACK to get Das Boot music throughout your patrols. MERCHANT VARIETY PACK as the name suggests adds more variety to merchant skins of vessels you will come across. Those are my suggestions and I use all those and more myself, none of these change the stock game's game-play realism. Add other graphic enhancements as to your liking. Theres mods to improve the seas (reflection, waves, wakes), sky (clouds, stars), U-Boat skins, torpedoe skins, damage effects (smoke, explosions), landscapes, enemy skins (planes, warships), and many, many, more-the list is endless!! When you're ready for realism changes, ask again, and that list is equally long!

Welcome to the best game in the world (it's like chess, but with explosions)!
I bought SHIII early on and played one very brief career (oops - you're dead!) and then another which spanned most of the war and 34 missions (how's that for lack of realism?). I played most of that career on high difficulty and with only a few minor mods that added realism to the onboard life of my subs. Like many other players, my first tweaks were confined to the gramaphone mods. It was safe and fun. Only now, as an expert-level player, have I begun to experiment with mods that have major effects on game-play. I'm very glad I did it that way. By playing a full career on high realism, I learned a lot about the basics of being a good sub commander before I started tweaking things. If I were you, I wouldn't make major game-play modifications until I felt like I had mastered the stock game. If I had tried to run GW, as I am now, or RUB before mastering the stock game, I think it would've kicked my butt. As it was, the stock SHIII on 100% difficulty frustrated the pants off me a time or two. I launched my first eel in Grey Wolves the other day, and when the tramp steamer I was aiming at burst into flames from that one successful torp, it was the most fun I've ever had playing the game. The more difficult it is to hit a target, the more satisfied you feel as you watch her slip beneath the waves. MHO, for what it's worth. b. |
