Default My best patrol yet, Feb. 1941 IX-C

Well, I'm not the uber-savvy skippers you fellas are, so I only play at 84% (W.O. help enabled and outside views - I lurve my sub!) with R.U.B. 1.45.

Unfortunately, I didn't take any screens, so I'll give a summary.

Had a patrol zone east of Ireland (AM I think... 36?) from Lorient (btw, was REALLY confused when I had a mission that had no patrol zone and I couldn't go to the Uboat screen or Captain's Desk in port - then realized it was a switch base mission - lmao).

After a few days at Standard, I got a radio report of a large convoy in my area. Unfortunately, it was west and north of my position. No, this sounds good, right? Not quite... I'd just finished engaging a C2 Cargo ship - that had guns! Imagine my surprise when I surface after putting a torp in it's engine to stop it and I'm getting shelled! Well, after I finished the mission, I found that bugger shot me down to 36.*% hull integrity!!!!

I sunk it and radioed it in. But, I was still repairing damage to my diesel engines. The convoy was heading NNE at 9 kts. I could chug along in those heavy seas at 7. Not a good chance of catching up!

Then a stroke of luck!

My crew repaired my engines about 5 hrs. later, enabling me to make 10kts. About 10hrs later I find out they had changed course SSE to make for the water between North Ireland and West England!

I managed to eyeball it on my map to put me at about a 35 angle! Not perfect, but damn good for my needs.

I halt about 5km infront of them (appx... it was foggy and difficult to see them) and prepare to engage. Suddenly, they all start to turn to my left! How did they see my periscope???

I sit and wait to see if they stop - and find they were adjusting course again! This time, it puts me on the other side with a less than great angle but doable.

I line up 3 of their T3 tankers and let two TIs at Fast go at one of them and let one each fly at the other two with the same settings. Two of them explode brilliantly with one torpedo, the other continues to chug along, but on fire. The rest of the convoy scrambles!

I take down my scope and follow them, waiting for my crew to reload. I then take at them again and destroy the damaged one. I stop, surface at night and let my crew bring in the external torps and reload.

By now there's but one T3 left and I let go with 3 torps - just in case. BOOM! it goes on the 3rd hit and explodes as well. With a few torps left (after trying and succeeding with 2 stern shots at a Coastal), I head for home and find I took out 5 tankers and the C2 cargo for over 62,000 tons! Got my promotion to Oberlt., my Knights Cross with Oak Leaves, Crossed Swords and Diamonds and quite a few goodies for my crew.

w000t!
