Hey guys!
A little luxury problem: I'm in late 1942 and have developed a super crew. All officers + petty officers are fully qualified and promoted, and have all medals available. And now half of the sailors have at least gold crosses, so now I never use the sailors in the stern quarters. So what do you do? Do you dismiss some of them? Or is it wise to keep them?

I can't think of a good reason to get rid of them. If you ever have some sort of major disaster (being damaged in a plane attack, perhaps) and lose some crew, I'm sure you'll be happy to have reserves on hand.
On the other hand, I have dismissed highly promoted officers before, under the assumption that they were being transferred out in order to take command of their own boats.

Thats one of the things i like in SH3 Com. that informes you that the Officer was left out and made cap of his owne boat. In barracks normal game playing you just have to desmiss him, and it sounds a bit like you're kiking the man out of the Sub. ![]() |

Does that feature happen automatically in Commander? Or do you have to move the officer out of sub so he can be promoted to his own boat?

There are (apparently) two kinds of transfers.
With "manage crew", you can give away officers for their own command. When launching SH3, you will get other forced transfers which can be everybody on board, due to accidents, court martials, sickness etc. These cannot be prevented. In RL, fluctuation of officers was quite high on the boats, especially after 1941. IWOs often made only 1 or 2 cruises before getting their own boat.

It is possible to negate an SHIII Commander crew transfer. Once the game has loaded and you are at the 'Load Mission' screen, rather than loading the 'Before Patrol' mission, click on the one above-'In Base After Patrol'. This will put you in base before the crewman was transferred. It will also negate the random time between patrols, so you will be in base exactly 28 days, or whatever it was set for before.
I discovered this accidentally, and though I know of it I've never used it intentionally. |
