Default Neutral or enemy?

Hi! Last night I was patroling with my new Type VIIB and I encountered two C2 cargos out of the english coast. It was very dark but my map showed them red so I attacked with the deck gun and sanked them both. Then I saved the game and exited. The screen said: "neutral tonnage: 2". WTF... I than got back to Wilhelmshaven and I was awarded over 1000 renown and I god medals. Now I'm really confused... Can someone explain? Were the two cargos allied or neutral? If they were neutral why was I rewarded?

They were allied. If they were neutral, sinking both, even if you'd patrolled your grid (and assuming these were the only ships you sank) you'd have gotten negative renown and no medals

Most likely you simply misread the summary screen after saving, which is easy enough to do.

Several times after I completed a patrol, the summary screen told me that 11 Axis and 3 Neutral ships had been sunk along with the 18 Allied ships that I sank. So you may not have committed any errors in attacking neutral ships after all. I have never torpedoed any Axis or Neutral shipping in the 15 careers that I've completed, so it wasn't by my hands.

You said that the contacts on the Navigation map were red... that generally means that the targets are legal if you are running the original SH3 without any modifications (vanilla). If they were neutral, then they would be represented with a green color, not red.

What is your realism setting percentage? That might explain why you received such low renown.

My realism percentage is actually 80%. Manual targeting. Thanx for the answers.
