Do you guys actually try to take on a Destroyer, or do you generally just try to sink merchants and avoid the destroyers? I just engaged my 1st destroyer (avoided them until now), I missed with 2 torps, and just decided to surface and lay into him with my deck gun. He took some serious damage but finally ended up ramming me and destroying the boat.
Also, with impact torps, what depth do you normally set them at? |

I personally play SHIII only in WaW. So I dont risk my boat being sunk. Tho, on last patrol I sank one DD. First destroyed her propellers with a acoustic eel and then struck it with a TI.
But normally, I try to evade them. |

I wasnt going to engage him, but I didnt spot him until he was pretty close, and I wanted to see if I could take him down for the fun of it. I fired the 1st mag torp and put it about 1 meter below him, but it didnt go off. He ended up close behind me and I fired and Aft mag torp and he turned really fast and it missed right behind his propellors. Then I just felt like I wouldnt be able to manuever to get any kind of a decent shot, so I surfaced and knew it wasnt wise, but I just went for it. Landed a ton of close range deck gun shots. He had multiple fired going on but then rammed me really hard. So I learned its not too easy to take them down. Once you get close enough to fire a torp, but then theyve spotted you and it was all downhill from there. Put up a decent fight though.

Trying to attack a DD is a waste of time and resources. You only have so many torpedoes in your loadout... use them for tonnage and get more renown.
One well-placed torpedo on a T3 pays almost twice the renown than one torpedo sinking a lowly V&W Destroyer, not to mention the tonnage difference. The only time I attack a DD is when I'm in shallow waters, the DD has detected me and I have no more depth below me to aid my escape. Even those situations are rare for me.

Going after a DD is tempting but it is not what your purpose is. The Kreigsmarine wants you to sink tonnage and fortunately most of the heavy tonnage in this game comes unarmed or lightly armed. The only problem is the small escorts that get in your way on trying to sink that tonnage. I only engage DDs as a last resort. If I know they have found me and stay persistant with their depth charging I will eventually come to periscope depth and fire a salvo of torps that they are sure to meet. But only if it's an emergency! |

Yep I concur, Taking on a Destroyer is a waste of resources which could be put to greater use. The speed and manauverability the destroyers have means that even a sure shot with a torp, isnt so sure! Keep the tinfish for the merchants whales of the sea
