Default Lost in the world of mods

I purchased SHIII on the day of release and played it hardcore for about six months. After that I graduated school and joined the 'real world' and my video games playing time was cut down to almost zero
Finally around Christmas time my new job finally dropped down to managable hours and I was put into one location. I took some of the money (well most of) from said job and built a new PC.
I never really forgot about SHIII, and now that I have the new system up and running it is going to be one fo the first games I install. For the first six months I played I never installed a single mod, I played the retail version of the games with whatever patches were out at the time.
I come back and see that everyone has been busy! There appears to be well over 100 mods avaliable for download.
So I ask of the community to point me in the right direction of which ones to get.
Which are the best ones and which ones are a waste of bandwidth?

My main goal I suposse is to add more realisim to the game and above all to expand out the possibilities while on patrol.
As much as I hate to say it, the game got boring and a chore to play after a while.
I guess first of all I would want a mod that actualy puts convoys into the game.
Big convoys, 30,40,50 or more ships.
I remember the game way back when I played it was a simple game of hunt down a single ship...sink it. Hunt down another...sink it.
Oh ****! A DD
Hunt down another ship...sink it.

I played my main career until mid 1944 and never saw a true convoy.
In fact I never really saw multiple ships together unless they were together by 'accident'
Has this been fixed?

Second of all I would like a mod to adress the piss poor damage model. I remember being able to take multiple 4/5 inch shells and fight on the surface with DDs.
500 lb bombs from planes could make direct impacts with little to no damage inflicted.
The damage infliced by my sub also seemed to be not near random enough.
It would be nice if there was a greater damage range by my weapons.
Some torpedos should hit critical spots and end a ships life rather quickly.
Some should hit and do little to nothing in the way of damage.
It almost seemed like enemy ships had hit points like an RPG game.
DDs in particular seemed very very weak.
My 88mm deck gun could sink a DD with about a dozen hits if I choose to engage on the surface.
Hmm...a single 88mm deck gun from an unbalenced moving platform vs five 5 inch turret mounted guns all tied into a integrated targeting system...

So to get back on point...is there any mod which adresses these things in a single mod?

Also one last thing. For anyone who played the Blizzard game Diablo II
There was a mode called 'hardcore mode'
It was a mode whereby if you died, that was it. You were dead and could no longer use your save game.
Loads of fun. Anything like this for SHIII?

Sorry for the long post, I am looking forward to replies

I think that the NYGM Tonnage War Released 06/03/06 will meet your requirements.

It's a .7z (7-Zip) archive.

Do you have winrar? That program can unpack that and most other types of archives:

Honestly, check, via Google, the 7z file format. It`s pretty handy, it`s for free, it`s effective.

Back to the very topic: either RUB or Tonnage Mod could help you. As for the U Boot damage, try the Hollywood Advanced (Implemented in Tonnage Mod). It does not solve all of the problems, but deals with MOST of them VERY well.

USE SH 3 Commander, if You`re not using it. Good software to make some nice background for the campaign.

JSGM is a Mod ENabler - very handy, prevents You from getting lost with tons of mods, changes of files et c. et c. Spared me at least three reinstallations.
