Default No map contacts attempt

Yesterday I read a topic called "Manual ploting and run-around ilustrated" and it catched my interest since I have been playing now for a while on 88% (only map updates and external view unchecked) and I wanted to take it to the next level so last night I printed out the instructions of that topic and of I went in my IIA sub.

I decided to do a practise run on the first enemy ship I encountered. So I was passing Sweden and Norway and I got the warning that we had a contact!!!! And so the excersise began..Me ofcourse being in good faith that I could get it right.. It was dark and windy outside but that was good so I was able to get a visual on the target.

I went to the periscope room and pressed the stopwatch button while after that I went back to the map and put a mark just behind my sub and then asked for a bearing and distance so that I could plot the lines to the target to get a fix on its position. Well after that I waited 3.15 minutes then did it 3 more times which gave me a somewhat rough Idea what the targets course was. (Wasn't accurate yet because I had no routine yet with this procedure..) Anyways I still decided to turn towards the target line to set myself up for a shot. Waited and waited then finally launched a torp but it went past its stern. And yes...I did open the torp door first..

As I mentioned my plot wasn't really accurate so I decided to try again, and did again another 3.15/6.30/9.45 (just three was enough for me). And This time it gave me a good speed between point 1 and 2 and point 2 and 3 which was 1 knot more then before...So there I was waiting again in a 90 degrees angle.. Then the HORROR!!!! I noticed the Gyroangle suddenly went up to 130/150 etc. and I realized it was passing behind me!!!!! It changed course!!!!!!!!

So set it up one more time just taking to plots 3.15/6.30 and finaly I was able to put a torp underneath its keel... This all took me about an hour to just sink 1 coastal merchant but I must admit this was really exciting and can understand now why people play this game on 100%......thats the way to go for me from now on..

Now I just have to try to get a target range and speed while being submerged....but I still have the happy years in front of me so I have time to practise..

Happy hunting!!!

Hi Dantenoc, thanks for the reply.

So what do you do in case you pick up a contact through hydrophones? I mean its then still out of visible range. How do you determine its speed/range/course?

Right now I just turn towards the bearing of the target, surface and go flank speed for about 20 minutes. Then submerge again to change to the new bearing. And go on like that till I have a visual.

Is this the only way or is there an easier way?

Try this thread, I think it'll help:

http://subsim.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=48389

I was thinking about doing an ilustrated example of hunting "blind", but the technique is sort of common knowledge and I don't want to look like I'm taking credit for it.

Thanks for the link, I allready thought of doing something simular like that except I didn't know exactly how far to travel on the surface.

I assume that this is a good method untill Radar comes out right?

After that you just depend on targets that are

a) moving somewhat towards you
b) Are close enough to identify and setup an attack

Because I think if I try this tactic when they have radar I don't think I'll life long.. I will try to play around with it tonight and let you know how it went..
