Hi all. Ok im NE of ireland in rough seas, all of a sudden my watch crew sight a ship, so i use my weapons officer to find it. Its a big fat C3 cargo so i open tubes 1&2, take aim , sort the solution (using my weapons officer ) and fire 2 torps at the target. Both fail to reach the target(which was 1500m away). Extremley pissed off , i open tubes 3 &4 only for the same thing to happen again. In my complete disgust i set a course for home now ive expended all my torps. Has this , or a similar occurance happened to anyone else? i would like to know
Thanks for your reply ![]()

I always try to get under 700meters in bad weather and put my torps to run at the shallowest depth so the waves don't carry my target over the torps...
idk, just some n00b advice from me. |

Sounds like you didnt do a final solution check before firing, or the fish ran too deep and went under the target. Rough seas no?

My personal practice in bad weather is to use the highest speed settings in steam torpedos in order to minimize time from sub to targets. I never fire a torpedo in rough weather if I'm not positioned real close to the ship (500-800 m) unless I really desperate for the target (e.g a fast passenger liner).

I think the electirc torps range is only 1500 meters, no? So they probably just crapped out at 1500?

i have no idea how the u-boat captains fired torpedos in rough weather. For a real treat, turn off the stabilization and try to hit something in a 15 Kn wind.
If you don't get seasick your are a real sailor. irish1958 |

Maybe your torpedoes were set to magnetic piston detonation, and they exploded prematurly, they often do that in rough seas.

Litte OT now:
I am curious on how the developers of SH4 are going to treat the problem of American torpedoes in 1942... These torpedoes actually had a height setting "bug". Many torpedos missed the ships and this thing drove the US sub crews crazy (and nobody believed them, I think for e year (? might be wrong ) Until someone developed a "mod" ![]() |
