Default Question about the in-game ship manual

I don't see any of the merchant ships I come across in there. Anyone know why? It would be nice if they were there so I can find out their draft.

look through the books until you come to "HandelShiffe"

all the other books are warships for each country.

Oh I didn't even realize there was other books. I just click left and right and there is about 7 ships or so in there.

You can use the arrows on the front page of the book to cycle through the countries. I forget exactly which button it is when the book is opened, but you must click on a specific one to completely close the book and enable other country selection. Otherwise you keep opening the same book, which I suspect is what has happend to you.

Another thing you can do-if you're not playing at 100%-is simply lock onto the target, scroll up to the top of the targeting display in the periscope or UZO positions and click on "Ship". This will instantly open the book to the proper page.

Oh yeah. I played for six or seven months before someone told me about that one.

I was wondering the same thing about merchant ships, the manual could use being alittle more explicit in how to page through books.

Haha. The whole game could use that. The game doesn't make very much of an effort to teach you. That's why I ask so many questions here. Of course I got yelled at for that, so now I just search around as much as I can and asking questions here is a last resort for me now.

You ask all the questions here you want. If anyone yells at you for asking questions please refer them to me.

That's what (most) of us are here for.

Hi John,

I just got the game, and did have a lot of questions. I tried to consolidate as much as possible. I did search around, probably not as much as I maybe should have, and asked questions here when I felt I needed to. Then some guy named frogdog hits me with this, which I thought was way out of line:

"You know what...I've been on this forum for a few monyhs. First...read the damn manual, read the myriad threads, read the wiki and use some common sense. The game is played by a host of people around the world....in their experience...every evolution is NOT a design/readme failure. Nobody here has ever had a problem with newbie questions....but goddamnit everyone here expects the questioners to know how to change their own diapers for statrers. This is not the hand-holding first friggin' grade....The GODS help those who first help themselves....whinners and fault-finders are exiled to and early, permant grave.
I do not apologize in advance for comments...and will acknowledge I am an intolerant, impaitent jerk....nonetheless...you would last exactly one nanosecond in my crew.
That having been said...do a little research first...if the answer is still not forthcoming...ask. If you just want to -spank me!- and moan, heres a quarter...call someone who cares."

So I sent my response to him and that ended pretty quickly. I admitted that I can search around more and have since done that. But often I can't find everything i'm looking for and now i'm afraid to ask them here. I'm good now I think. I got past most of my initial questions and only have a few hear and there so i'll keep asking away here. I guess a couple people like frogdog and jscones got annoyed with all my questions. I just look at it like I am definitely doing my part to help keep the site alive. Lol

Holy Crap!

My appologies for that. I completely missed that one.

That type of response does not represent in any way the attituide of 99% of the people around here. I have been a denizen of a lot of sim fora over the years and I have never seen a better or more helpful group of people than you will find here.

I really wish I had caught that when it happened as I would have explained the above to the poster. If you (or anyone reading this) ever run into that kind of attituide again please PLEASE drop me a pm and I will get into it.

Thanks

JCC

It's no problem. I didn't take any personal offense to it or anything. I can care less about what that guy thinks about anything. I got a good laugh out of reading some of what he wrote. He told me I would last exactly 1 second if I were on his crew. I found that pretty amusing, and actually really distrubing that he would say something like that one a videogame forum.

Whoa, I've played the game for a month now, and you just now taught me about locking on and clicking on "ship". That's why I like to scan the new topics every couple of days around here.

And I too was also wondering why there isn't any merchant ships in the manual! I was wondering what country "HandelShiffe" was! Never thought to open it up, silly me.

Trenken, if you want to enhance your recognition manual, I found two mods that were helpful. There's Augie64's English & Flag Recognition Mod V1.0 that translates (if you speak english that is) the countries, names from German and puts the countries' corresponding flags on the cover, and FULL VULNERABILITY MANUAL MOD, which gives more info on the ships, including "sweet spots" of where to aim your torps. Both are in Subsim's mod download page. (OK, well I haven't actually used them yet, but I just downloaded them and they SOUND like they'll be very helpful! Would've figured out that "HandleShiffe" thing out long ago had I been using these mods already, I think!)
