Okay really this doesnt seem to be accurate at all. Specially after reading Hitlers Uboat War and Iron Coffins.
Mods Rub 1.43 Sink them All v2.2 Sh3 newest version Habour Traffic Chromus "full" mod Uwac Rub Compatible Okay so here is whats been happening. I havent been getting passed 1940. In this last patrol, which was my latest. I died in Feb1940 thanks to accurate and deadly depth charge attacks. But before i go into that. I had 4 patrols. All 4 of em i encountered strong enemy aircraft attacks, along with being spotted and detected by boats and pretty good distances. A aircraft appeared even after torpedoed an auxilary cruiser and dropped a bomb near my bow. Ive been only sinking single merchants, and 2 armed trawlers. Now i encountered a LARGE Convoy northeast of Ireland. This is Feb 1940. As i grew closer to it.. It had 7 escorts.. 7!!! 7!!!! Thats nutz! Britian DOES NOT HAVE THE resources to COmmit 7 BOATS to 1 convoy!!! Thats ridiculous!! Not only that. These bastards saw me at 4000+ meters!!! I managed to get at least 2000 meters behind the convoy ducking and dogding depth charge attacks. But as i drew closer. I was pinged incessitly by 2 Hunt I. Not only that, they were GOOD at it. I never lost em, i dropped to 80 meters but never went on silent run because DDs usually lose their contacts after a few depth charge attacks. But they were great at it. And they finally got me and U-53 went to the bottom with a loss of all hands. Only sinking 32,000+ tonnage. Now tell me, is any1 else experiencing this difficulty in such an early stage, because i never have. |

Just my 2 cents, but the point of RUB is to make things more difficult / challenging i thought. Never installed it though as to me it would make the game more of a real work-out thing and with the limited time to play i have available it didn't appeal to me
I'm only running Improved Convoys and Harbour Traffic but in the standard SHIII i've encountered up to 6 escorts so far but never that early in the war. I have been kept under for almost 3 hours real-time in 1941 by 2 DDs who seemed to be seriously angry with me and i have lost 7 crewmembers to air attacks as well as seriously getting my boat whacked during those attacks. These DDs once fitted with radar can easily detect you from quite some distance, as a result i hardly ever sent contact reports anymore as it will mean most of the times that a DD will come out to my position to investigate and i will have to sneak out again thus loosing the convoy again. And silent running, well it's in the game for a reason. It will make the difference between getting depthcharged again or quitly loosing those Brits above.... But wait and see what the RUB users can tell you, but i think the experiences won't be off much. Brdgs Einzelganger

The only time a escort can not hear you is while the depth charges are exploding. I have found that the deeper you go, the better the chance of loosing them. I routinely dive to about 130M when under attack, and can usually lose them after a couple of passes. I run SHIII Commander, Inproved Convoys, Harbor Traffic as my major mods.

I do not use the RUB mod, because i want to play the game as a game ,but from what i have seen, the best way to avoid destroyer attacks is:
-Always patrol in areas with deep water ,so that you can dive to your maximum depth. -When spotted,i dive at flank speed to gain depth,at aroud 70 m i decrease to silent running and turn my course so that the DD may do a false attack based on my old course. -When depth charges explode i do brief flank speed runs and steer hard to the opposite side from that from which i expect the charges (watching the course of the DD in the sonar room and using headphones is very helpful to predict the pattern of the charges and so to decide whether to steer left or right). -As soon as the sound of depth charges start fading,i go back to silent running and 1 knot speed changing course according to the sonarman's lines ,trying to predict the circle that the DD will do next. Most times you can escape like that. |

Once you are detected you need to go deeper than 80M. Once I'm detected I go to 140M and give up the attack until I can break contact. Then if possible I work my way into position for another attack. Even early in the war I suggest you go deep. I encountered a large convoy in Oct. 39 that had 6 sets of high speed screws but atleast one of them was a cruiser. Try RuB 1.45 I think its better than 1.43, better convoys.

wait u guys are missing the point. What the hell are constant air attacks and accurate depth charges EVEN DOIN IN 1939-1940. It shouldnt even be a consideration thatb early in the war. RUB is suppose to make it more realistic... and it doesnt seem so.

Try RuB 1.45 I think you will like it. I have only been Air attacked by Hurricanes in 39' & early 40' and they seemed to have been very inaccurate. Also not to hard to evade the early war DDs and escorts.

I guess it is a little harder than it should be early on. I too have noticed that the depth charge attacks are very accurate. Maybe ask on the mod forum how to tweek the sensors of the enemy. There is some kind of program that you cn use to change all kinds of stuff in the game. I can't remeber what its called though.

I see you have several different mods installed. Could some of them possibly be overriding others? I use RUB 1.45 and I think it includes the 'Depth Charge' mod, which makes them less powerful and requires them to be much closer to do serious damage. I've been depth charged a couple of times and even though I take damage so far it hasn't been serious-no hull % damage at all, just minor breakages which were easily and quickly fixed.
I'm not sure what the problem is, but I don't seem to be having it. Also, I too have been attacked a couple of times by a single airplane, which missed wide of the mark even though I was late in diving. SHIII Patch 1.4b RUB 1.45 HT 1.47 SHIII Commander 2.3 A bunch of graphics and sound mods. That's about it. Oh, and my most advanced Kaleun is in January '40. |

you could just be a poor player. I dont mean to offend, but it is a possibility.
Could you discribe your tactics in detail? For example IMHO if the escorts saw you at 4000m you should have compleatly aborted your attack for at least 6 hours and you should never approach a convoy from behind under water, thats asking for trubble. Allways get ahead of the convoy and wait for them to come to you. That way you dont make any noise untill things start blowing up. To chase the convoy under water your E-motors must have been running very loudly

I have completed a DiD career from early '40 to the end of the war in a IID so I know these tactics work
![]() First off know where your enemy is, find the convoy on the hydrophones (or sight if you must...) and put a mark on the map every now and then to work out a rough course. Once you know where they are and where they're going, just make sure you will end up in front of them, not coming from behind like you said. At night (before radar) you could proberly get within 2km of your enemy with a fairly low risk, but during the day you should keep at the maximum sight distance. Even better, just keep out of their sight and follow run parallel to their estimated course. If you are detected dive deep quickly, always know how deep your boat can go and how deep the water is where you are. When you hear the pinging it's time to go ahead flank, when you get the 'depth charges in the water' message you should make a ~15* turn to either side (most recommend making hard turns, but it will slow you a lot more). Once the pinging stops you should change to silent running and set your speed to 2kts, I've heard 2kts is a lot quieter than the 'default' 3, and it seems true in practice. After that just stay silent and deep, and you should be fine ![]() This is just how I do it, and it works well for me so you may have some luck with these tactics too. The best teacher is experience ![]() |

My experience with IUB 2.0 (which includes RUB) is this...
IT'S WAY TOO EASY - Rarely get attacked by aircraft (even now in July 1944) - Rarely get attacked by DD's, especially if choppy or stormy waters. I am usually able to attack and escape with ease. - - If I am finally spotted and attacked by DD's, I can usually get away after some cat and mouse / BOLD manuevers. In other words - I've yet to be challenged by the game. The AI seems very weak, no aircraft to speak of, and general feeling of "Can this be more of a challenge please?" Any reasons why this game is so easy? |
