Default Trying to understand!

Guys,
just help me out a little bit, i've heard many people talk about SCS never wating people, to mess with the EXE files in DW, but im trying to understand where they are? not sure if im missing something or not? Im not so good with file changing, and totally respect SCS wishes in not changing the EXE files to add in new playable surface craft, but i just wanted to know what they look like, curiosity i guess.

Look in the main folder and in Interfaces for .dll files. Really you are not going to see much unless do de-compile them (which ummmm well don't...).

well i want to have a look at the weapon load outs for the ffg, see if it can be modified at all, just as a bit of a challenge. What reader allows viewing and editing of DLL files?

It is against SCS wishes to tamper with the dll pertaining to the playable units.
So I doubt someone here will give you info as how to access, decompile and modify such files (which by the way is illegal as going against the game license).
Just enjoy the game + the approved mods.

Well, technically it's not *illegal* but it's a breach of contract.

And last time I checked, that was illegal...

I haven't read our EULA lately, so I can't speak authoritatively on it, but certainly I would not advise this sort of action...

I believe you are free to modify your installation of DW all that you wish, but when you choose to "distribute" those modifications you need to be VERY careful (especially if it is the modificaton of compiled object code, DLLs, or executables).

It's up to you, but again I would advise you against those sorts of projects.

Lead Pursuit, the company which has developped the new version of Falcon 4, that is Falcon 4 Allied Force has put in place a very interesting way to allow mods.
As many people are or aren't aware modding in the Falcon 4 community has always been very very wild, everthing was "allowed" because the right holders didn't give a damn.
Now that the game has been commercially revived, a part of the community wanted to go on with the wild modding.
Obviously this wasn't possibile anymore so LP came up with a centralized approved modding policy.
Basically what it states is that any kind of modding of Falcon 4 AF has to be approved by LP and only then it will be made available to the community and distributed by LP (except certain cases such as the High Resolution Tiles )
They even take steps to render "non - approved mods" unusable in Falcon 4 AF.
Maybe SCS could take inspiration from them, as that would at least limit any kind of wild modding of Dangerous Waters.

Just my 0.2 €.

Well, modifying something from the game and redistributing it would probably be copyright infringement (unless you can make a judge believe it is some form of fair use).

Making a program that performs the necessary changes on a file, but that doesn't contain any of the game contents, would avoid that. That might still be breach of contract if the EULA doesn't allow it AND if the EULA is considered a valid, enforceable contract (which isn't necessarily the case, even if you clicked on an "I agree" button).

But I'm not a lawyer, and you might want to discuss this with someone who is (preferably specialised in this kind of thing).

If it requires the original product to be of any use, I believe it would be rather safe in *that* aspect.

Sound advice.
