Default Deck Gun question

How do I set which type of Deck Gun Ammunition is used by the AI crew?

It always seems to default to High Explosive.

When I choose target the waterline, I want to know that my crew is using Armor Piercing.

Any help?

Yes, but you only get that option when you are manning the gun yourself.

I am trying to make sure the AI crew is using the Deck Gun Ammo I want when I let them shoot themsleves.

I don't think this is necessarily the case. I was under the impression they will use HE against merchants and AP for escorts (specifically when firing at DDs guns). Not sure what happens when they exhaust these defaults. I guess they switch off to whatever you have.

When firing the gun themselves they will chose whatever they think necessary and swith to leftovers when cleaned out.
When firing yourself (which is more fun and yields far better results) you can chose by clicking your left mousebutton on one of the ammo types above the white timeline to the right. The gun will reload with that type of ammo.
Think the default ammo is coded somewhere in the cfg files so make a search for that in those files.

On a recent mission I had the crew firing at a merchant ship and noticed they stopped firing after a time. When I checked the gun I saw HE had run out and I had to manually fire the remaining AP at the target, the crew did NOT automatically switch over to AP.

Default Which type for what situation?

I still do not know which type of ammo is more suited for individual situations. I mainly use the HE ammo because I have more of it. Most of the time I am aiming for the waterline unless the target is firing back at me. If I am under attack, I am aiming for the guns themselves. I have upgraded to RUB 1.45 and noticed that the gun is much less effective now. If anyone has any thoughts on which ammo to use and when, replies are much appreciated.

Wouldn't AP ammo be better for firing at the waterline, hence the the piercing part? I was never a Deck Gun guru although I did do a nearly 100k patrol and sank nearly 30k of shipping with only my deck gun.

Merchant hulls aren't armor-plated. HE rounds will make a bigger hole.

I usually throw a few AP rounds either at the bow or stern waterline to slow her down, then unload with some HE rounds.

Somebody mentioned in another thread that you can instruct your AI deckgun crew to fire starshells to illuminate a target. On the line of selecting amunition for the crew (without manning the DG yourself) is this possible?
